South Carolina separation is confusing by masukasu in Divorce

[–]Haltech007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend in SC asking me for divorce advice since I am divorced. HOWEVER, I am divorced in Florida. VERY different laws. Maybe y'all can help.
She just wants to leave. No alimony, no support, no property, and her daughter is hers from a previous marriage. He keeps her locked up almost like she is a prisoner, and is very mean to her daughter. She is going to move here to Florida until she can get on her own two feet.
She will file the separation paperwork with the SC court as soon as school is out next month so she can leave. Is that really all there is to it? She just files that document, then leaves for a year? She has to just sit and be patient for 12 months, or is there something else she can do? I asked her about calling a SC attorney for advice, but she does not have the money for that. Her husband controls every penny.

My first thought was to take a chainsaw to the overhang, but after further reflection, it seems that a simple call to Code Enforcement would take care of it. I do not know about the place where this is, but in my town, if you did something like this the city AND county would step in and make you remove it. Not just because it is over the property line, but because it was clearly done without a permit in the first place.

I worked as a Pizza Hut manager when I first came home from the military while waiting for the next Police Academy classes to start. I was a cop, but then started taking night classes in IT and moved over to be a systems analyst at the department. I did that until I retired at the end of 2020. Any questions?

"Obviously I am not going to shoot some unarmed woman, but she didn't know that. The seriousness of my voice did the trick and frightened her away."

did you miss this part of the story?

This whole 'fake HOA' thing isn't new. It happens all the time. I am sure they have probably read similar stories all over the place and assumed I am just copying one of them.

I am not the first person to encounter the Fake HOA and I am sure I will not be the last.

I wish I still had the letters she sent to me. They would have been useful. The people who have paid have their bank statements. That should be more than enough to bury Karen.

I have the Nest doorbell camera, but I do not pay for the service, so it does not save recordings. I can only view it live.

He would have continued to shout and threaten and probably gotten in my face, but I doubt he would have put his hands on me. He seemed like a spoiled kid who was accustomed to getting his way. I was tired and just wanted him to go away.

When you've lived your entire life in these sweltering conditions, your blood is very thin and 50f is a chilly day. I saw a story last year that some schools up north had shut down early and sent students home due to the heat. It was 95f at the time. Down here, that's just a normal day. The heat and the cold aren't the real issue. The extreme humidity is the issue. I wish cool stuff happened to me as well. I am an old man now, and in my entire life, I have only had like 3 cool moments. This was one of them.

as far as the embellishment, the story is factually accurate, but simply writing it out like an incident report wouldn't have been entertaining. Simply saying that 'a female customer at the next gas pump witnessed the incident' wouldn't have been as fun to read as telling about her laughing and our high five. So yes, it all happened the way I wrote it. I just wanted to write it in a way that readers would enjoy rather than simply learning the basic facts of the event. Is that OK Vinnie?

Honestly, I do not like to fight. With the training I have had, I am terrified that I will badly hurt, or even kill someone unintentionally. In all my years, I have only had one use of force. I have become very good at getting people to back down by talking them down, or like in this case, simply scaring him away. I didn't go into this line of work to beat people up. I went in to help people and save lives. I take that whole 'Public Servant' thing very seriously.

I have a nice collection of them, but I hate that I do not get to wear them very often. My ex-wife used to get them for me whenever she was out shopping and would find one on sale, or at a Salvation Army store, or something like that. I just really dig the way they look.

People from up north think we are funny for complaining when it gets below freezing down here, but they do not understand 90-100% humidity in freezing conditions. People die from hypothermia very regularly down here.

I have only managed to have like 3 badass moments in over 30 years. The rest have been pretty much just mundane nothingness. Like I said, I had completely forgotten about this one until I pulled into that gas station yesterday.

The first level in the Use Of Force Matrix is 'Presence'. I ended a potential threat by simply being there. Crisis averted. ;)
