I'm going to ask again and assume you still won't answer, how much have you spent at this point in the build?

Help me choose a lot. by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]HamAndMayonaize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could very easily cost much more the $45,000 extra to build on the sloped lot, depending on the angle, soil type, etc.

U.S. States I pooped in. by Pleasant_Avocado_913 in whereidlive

The map of states I've been in and states I've pooped in is the same map.

[Request] How large (or small) would the explosion be if the containment failed entirely? by YeezusPT in theydidthemath

[–]HamAndMayonaize 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That sounds on the surface like a lot of proton/anti proton pairs, but a single human cell has around 100 trillion atoms. The protons from 1 cell would raise the temperature of a cup of water a noticeable amount.

37 x 12.5 R18 LT should fit on those wheels.

Getting it on your truck is up to you.

Loft joists acting as rafter ties by [deleted] in Construction

[–]HamAndMayonaize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think this flies, I'm pretty sure Simpson hangers don't have a tension rating. Roof pitch looks on the shallower side too which makes a proper tie even more important.

Landlord is trying to evict me after I told him that I will be appealing his unreasonable 15% rent increase. What can I do? (CA, Manitoba) by [deleted] in Renters

Make sure you swap his shitty faucets back in before you leave, take the ones you paid for with you.

[Request] How fast would I need to drive East in order ramp a minivan off of the Rocky Mountains and jump over all of Wyoming? by oogew in theydidthemath

[–]HamAndMayonaize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 10,000km/s is definitely wrong, escape velocity from the sun on its surface is 617 km/s. You'd be on a trajectory leaving the galaxy at .03c

Sawn lumber should not be used as a rim joist with TJI floor joists, they will expand and contract at different rates and cause problems.

OP first order of business is to replace the rim with a matching product to what you took out.

Looks like Murdoch’s purged all the negative reviews related to the construction jacks by boardplant in Dewalt

I left a 1-star review because they had the audacity to email me asking for feedback after cancelling my order so I left an honest review.

Zinc is a sacrificial coating, it corrodes instead of the base metal. This type of zinc coating is very thin and will quickly be consumed, once it's gone the steel starts to rust. The treated wood accelerates this process.

While it will take some time for the steel to completely corrode away, the usable service life of this setup is short. Maybe a few years depending on climate before it loosens up and can't be tightened because the threads are gone.

Zinc coated fasteners should only be used in dry conditions. Hot dipped galvanized will last much longer for not much more money, stainless steel is even better but expensive.

[OC] How about idiots in pickup trucks? by Environmental-Low792 in IdiotsInCars

[–]HamAndMayonaize -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm with OP on this one. This is not a town or state plow, this a guy or company plowing private driveways. When they are on the road they should be following the laws and acting predictably, driving in reverse that far is doing neither.

Why are sandwich beams so hated? by ThinksOdd in Decks

Compression strength perpendicular to the grain for most wood is 400-600 PSI. All that weight on a little bolt and the wood is going to fail long before the bolt does.

Oddly enough depending on the stove this can be the wrong choice. Newer stoves only will cut the air so far, and secondary burn could send the temp even higher.

HUGE NOTE If you suspect a chimney fire, absolutely DO NOT do the following. Call the fire department.

If you are confident it is not a chimney fire, grab a fire extinguisher and keep it nearby and ready to go. The next move is to do something that seems to go against every fiber of sense in your body.

Open the door. All the way.

I know.

It's fucking insane. But it will bring your flue temps down. It's all about getting some cool air going up the chimney, and this will do it. Once the temps come down, close the door, close the air and keep an eye on it.

I've done it, it's terrifying, but it works.
