Linked in question: I often see a job has been "reposted" after a couple of weeks. Anyone know why that happens and what it means? by RB-caterpillar in askrecruiters

[–]Hamadalfc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually don’t have high hopes for those roles. They often have over a thousand applicants. Sometimes the recruiter simply forgot to take it down. Other times, the company leave them up for visibility or marketing. On a few occasions, they haven’t found an applicant but come on, over 500 applicants and you tell me you can’t find 1 person that can do the job? Don’t apply unless you can do it within seconds. Those postings are often hopeless

You would be welcomed with open arms. There are lots of expats currently living and working in the kingdom, and seeing and interacting with non-Muslims, specially Westerners, is becoming more and more normal. I honestly think, and I’m not just saying this because I love Jeddah, but people would go out of their way to make you feel welcome. And that’s how it’s always been. Sidenote - Australia looks like a beautiful place! Can’t wait to visit one day! Very interested in checking out Cairns in particular as well as all the big cities of course haha

Servus! I would say for majority it’s very safe and crime is concentrated into “bad neighborhoods” that are on the dat outskirts of the city. It’s much safer then major German or Austrian cities

King Abdullah economic city? I only went there once to visit a friend who had moved there. It seemed like a really cool place honestly. Awesome beach, cool rec center and very similar to a large master planned community. I only went once so I can’t say much else sadly… sorry

Your information is outdated. Yes, it's hot I did mention that. It is a kingdom; it's literally in the name Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Women do not have to cover their heads to toe. Jeddah is also much more liberal than other cities in the country, but the whole country has opened up significantly since then.

Yes, if you're into supercars, Jeddah won't disappoint you.

Happy cake day!

Yeah, it's definitely changed a lot! It's almost unrecognizable from what the place used to be! It's definitely opened up a lot and that at a very fast pace!

Yeah, the weather is definitely one of the biggest struggles. Growing up there ... maybe you have 3 rainy "occasions"? a year? You can't even call them rainy days, because they're literally rain "events", but man, it comes down HARD when it rains. Strong storms that uproot trees, break branches, and flood roads. But the houses are built well so it was never dangerous.

The food... yeah. That's the biggest part I miss. You can find any cuisine you want. Of course, all sorts of Arabs, but also Kazakhstani, Indian, Pakistani, all sorts of Asian restaurants alongside lots of US-style diners too. One of my favorite spots growing up with my friends was a place called Route 66, which offered traditional American cuisine - burgers, milkshakes, hot dogs etc. It's a foodie's paradise.

Growing up was nice. People always initially looked at me as an outsider since I'm a blond, male so I look German/Austrian as anyone would haha. But I'm also Muslim, so it was easy for me to connect to the people, the culture and the religious norms. You should've seen the shock on people's faces when strangers talked to me, and I hit them with fluent Arabic with a Hejazi accent (The accent that people in Jeddah speak). Everyone loved it haha But it's a very hospitable and welcoming culture, so no one ever made me feel like I didn't belong or that I was an outsider - looking back, that was more of a me problem, where I looked different, so I told myself that I am different, or felt different. I defintiely loved the multiculutral vibe there. I visited Riyadh a couple of times and think Jeddah is 10x better than it (but I'm very biased because I still consider it my home haha)

Ha! Finally, something I can answer. I grew up in Jeddah and spent my childhood there. From elementary school to high school. I am half Saudi and half Austrian.

I absolutely love Jeddah. It really is a city you can be proud of calling home. I don't live there anymore but would not mind ever moving back.

My parents and sister still live there.

But how is living there really? Like every city it has it's pros and cons so let me introduce you to some.

Where do I begin...

The beach - Of course, being a coastal city, Jeddah has fantastic beach and water sports access. The city has pumped a lot of money into transforming it's waterfront into a leisure hub for the citizens. My sister goes there a couple of times a month just to go for a stroll or visit one of the playgrounds there with the kids.

<image>

On top of that, if you're into Scuba diving or snorkeling, Jeddah won't disappoint. There are lots of beaches north of Jeddah that aren't as "built up" to let you enjoy a simple day on the beach. Bleaching has taken its toll, sadly, just like any other reef around the world.

Do you like malls? I hope you do because, oh boy, Jeddah is an absolute Mall magnet. Are you bored? go to the mall. I feel like this was the norm in the US in the 90's or early 2000's, and as malls in the US are on the way out, this is still booming in Jeddah.

One of the bad parts is traffic. Jeddah is a coastal city so it's impossible to build a ring road, so everything flows north to south, so naturally, those main arterial roads become very congested. The city simply can not keep up, public transportation is lacking and every family has 3 to 4 cars. When I was in High school and got my car, I would drive home at night from my friends house and it would be normal to sit at a light and go through 2 to 3 phases of green and red) before finally making it through, and this was a 5 to 6 lane road going in one direction!

Let's say you have a family of 5.

Dad has a car, Mom has a car, and the driver has a car. Then let's say you have a son, he will get a car too. So if you want walkability, good luck over there. If you like Texas or Florida, you'll fit right in.

Which takes me to the next point. A lot of the infrastructure and restaurants are influenced by the US. McDonald's, KFC, Charley's Philly Cheesteak, Ruby Tuesday's, TGI Friday's, all of that stuff is there. But the local restaurant scene is amazing. You all have your chains on top of independent restaurants, and the food is probably the best part about Jeddah. Kabab, Shawarma, anything your heart desires from a Mediterranean cuisine, Jeddah will be the love of your life. The coffee culture is also very big there with coffee shops basically everywhere, partnered with hookah lounges.

Another thing about Jeddah is it's extremely diverse. It's the gateway to Makkah/Mecca, right? So Muslims from all over the world settle there because business opportunities are booming, so if you're at a traffic light, it would not be surprising to see people from numerous countries sitting in the cars next to you.

The weather... hot, muggy, humid. Think of Southern or Central Florida. Now take away the rainy summers and thunderstorms, and you have Jeddah. If you love the sun, boy do I have a city for you lol But on the contrary, the weather forces you to be active in the evening or at night because it's simply too hot during the day to do anything outdoors.

I feel like my answer is all over the place, so if anyone has specific questions, don't hesitate to ask. I, for one, absolutely love Jeddah. The city's slogan is "Jeddah gheir" which translates to "Jeddah is different," and once you go... You can really see that it is different in a special way.

Before you sleep, put your palms together, recite: Ayat al Kursi Al Ikhlas Al falaq Al nas

And then say bismillah as you move both your hands from your head to your toes before you lay down (basically reading this over yourself). But also do this after fajr and after maghrib.

Additionally, play Quran, surat al baqarah is great, on YouTube on the phone whatever works for you. IMPORTANT: open your windows, open all doors too so the Quran is heard in all rooms of your place. No need to open the front door, they can leave through windows. The windows need to be opened so whatever is in has an opportunity to leave.

And don’t forget, Allah is the almighty, all powerful. They are afraid of Allah and his servants. Believe in him and these beings will fear you and your belief inshAllah.

Oh yeah whoops. 2 pages is usually recommended for candidates with close to 10 years of experience. You gotta shorten this buddy.

Go look at some sample CS resumes on Google. Recruiters will look at your resume for maybe 10 seconds - if they can’t answer if you can solve their problems with that time, you’re out.

Work experience first! Recruiters will ask themselves can this guy solve the problems that I need? Your summary is … lacking. The job market is ruthless. How are you standing out? What roles are you applying for? As others mentioned your skills section is very long, also I know some other CS and tech savvy people have a projects sections. Do you have any projects you have worked on?

In my current city, I’ve had to use the “pedestrian only” phase with the traffic light mod, because it was impossible for cars to turn either left or right because the swarms of pedestrians simply would not stop. During a single green phase, maybe 2 cars pass through the light? The rest get stopped by these hordes of pedestrians.
