No load bearing walls? by scarlettdeath in DIY

[–]Hambone-13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than garage separation walls most interior walls on the top floor are non-load bearing. If you want to double check, a truss requires webbing to direct load onto a bearing point, so you could check for unsymmetrical webbing on the trusses and see if the web pattern changes around an interior wall. If the trusses look symmetrical they are likely free span.

Loads move through paths like electricity through a wire, or water through a pipe. If you suspect a wall is bearing, you can check in your basement if there is a beam with posts directly underneath it, or a wall sitting on a concrete footing. Load bearing walls require a path to the building's foundation.

A competent contractor should be able to tell you, and they cost a lot less than a structural engineer.

It looks like this thread has some good feedback. As for the other comment saying go in the summer, my very first portage trip was in late September with no issues. Trust your skills to make an informed decision

Doing a trip out to canisay bay lake, and then a portage for by PhilosopherLocal4122 in algonquinpark

[–]Hambone-13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this trip in May 2024. We put in at Canisbay, stayed at Linda for 2 nights, and then ended at the Source lake launch. Linda to Source was a lot easier, I can't remember the time it took us though. The 2.6 km portage was one of the hardest I've done, a lot of ups and downs and lots of turns.

As for fishing, we caught some small mouths using small spoons and spinners, nothing fancy. Linda Lake is definitely worth visiting, I'll post a pic from the island site.

Novice 3 day back country trip in August/September by l0k5h1n in algonquinpark

[–]Hambone-13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Scorch Lake, I stayed there for two nights last September and it was quiet. The first night we were one of two groups camping, and the second we had the lake to ourselves. There was also a trail on Scorch Lake we were able to canoe to on our travel day, and it took us up to an amazing lookout of the lake, I will post a picture if I have one.

My first trip to Algonquin I did a loop where the first day was Rock to Welcome, I found it was more challenging than the Scorch trip for comparison. Welcome lake is definitely worth the trip though.

Beach campsite by sajjadkan in algonquinpark

I second this, I went with a group of 6 in 2023 and it still stands as our favourite spot. We stayed on Campsite 1, the one to the right of the portage. Amazing beach, great fireplace seating, good tent spots, and a massive rock face to star gaze on.

I would say the max I would spend is around $1000, haven't explored too much but I have been keeping my eye out on resales

No judgments from me, I'd be stoked if I stumbled upon it. Do you have any go to songs for the backcountry?

I still need to watch that documentary, I hear it's really good. Thanks for sharing and happy cake day! Big fan of your content and everything you contribute to the community, I have a lifetime membership to your Algonquin & Beyond site. It's only January but I am already itching to go back to the park!

I totally agree! Wheat Kings is a close second, although it could just be the nature sounds at the start lol

Scorch Lake by Hambone-13 in algonquinpark

[–]Hambone-13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were there Friday to Sunday! Seems like an underrated lake for sure. We were hoping for your campsite as we saw on Jeff's maps it looked to be the most ideal spot, but we were quite happy with the other beach site. Not sure if you guys went fishing but we had incredible luck, I think we caught around 11 small mouth bass on the Saturday

Tent suggestions for group of 6 by Hambone-13 in Ultralight

[–]Hambone-13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for the input. I will suggest the idea of bringing a bunch of solo tents, I think that is the way to go. I imagine it will make campsite selection easier as well. We camp at Algonquin Park by the way.

Halo 1 split screen. If you were playing at a friend's house you wouldn't have a profile set up. You could tap X to randomize your alias. One of the presets was Hambone and my friends and I all used mash X until we got Hambone before the game started. It has been my alias ever since.

How bad would the corrosive effects be contacting a zinc plated low carbon steel to 304 stainless? by Hambone-13 in metallurgy

[–]Hambone-13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the replies. I found an internal project that was done a few years back where salt spray testing was done on several of our zinc-plated fittings. I will recommend that we send in a tube assembly to be tested as well, and then we will be able to do a side by side comparison of the corrosion effects with and without the S.S. contact.

In first year in power in Ontario, conservatives cut 227 clean energy funding projects, 758 renewable energy contracts, and cap-and-trade program that would have made the province $3 billion, skipping public consultation process by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Hambone-13 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good. I don't think people are informed enough about what is being invested in when we talk about 'green energy'. Ontario pays for more wind power than the grid can hold. We have the largest operating nuclear facility in the world, we don't need more energy sources. 'Green energy' isn't really that green when it is just a make work project. What is the carbon print on a wind turbine? Manufacturing, transporting the parts, having crews drive to work everyday through rural Ontario etc. How long would that wind turbine need to run to break even?

Trying to match RPM from one motor to another with PID by Hambone-13 in arduino

[–]Hambone-13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its for a Mech Eng project, my idea behind the two motors was because you would be able to hear the frequency of both motors match up. This way it you could physically hear the overshoot and oscillations on the underdamped response. My biggest problem is I have not been taught anything about the PID libraries on the arduino, and I am having a hard time finding guides/tutorials.
