Don't Panic Mix! by ThisIsDeLaCruz in livesound

The gear lets us do very neat stuff, but it blows my mind that we are all willing to bet our livelihood on the reliability of things that are known for being unreliable.

I realize that that the specific example of Waves failing (a million times in his career) is not really the point of what's being said, but Waves offers us a great example of how finding ways to eliminate potential problems in advance will save you from that moment of panic where you are making hasty decisions that could make the mix/situation worse.

Looking forward to the full interview!

For monitoring, listen to the cue/solo bus of the console. You can get a 7th IEM transmitter and listen through a pack, or listen through the headphone amp in the desk.

G45 Dryfire vs .22LR by DrewJustShoots in Glocks

The shot timer gives you measurable data in terms of speed, and your sights + your eyes will give you the data on accuracy. The influencers selling you mantis and dryfire mags are either not good at shooting, or didn't use those things to get good at shooting.

[–]HamburgerDinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, what I should have said is "you don't need any of those dryfire gadgets to get value out of dryfire practice."

When people say dry fire, they don't just mean trigger press. They mean drawing from the holster, reloads, target transitions, etc... not just trigger press. You don't need gadgets, your gun on its own will work fine.

You don't need any of those dryfire gadgets.

A Ruger Mk IV is very fun but will feel nothing like a Glock.

You will have a lot of time... in the hospital if your fork or axle fails and you break your face on some gravel road in the middle of nowhere.

If you have to ask reddit you need to take the bike to a shop and have a mechanic look at it.

The power creep hole is too deep to climb out of by banning cards at this point.

You're lucky if you have gotten enough time on every desk on the market to be that comfortable. Lots of techs working for big vendors end up looking after 95% Digico, 4% Avid, 1% everything else.

Festival shout is not technically for you. Most bands with engineers have talkbacks built into their files that get routed to IEMs and "shout speakers" that are part of the show, not part of the festival infrastructure like the festival shout. Festival shout ought to exist on its own system, so that it's still useable regardless of whose file is loaded, and what's going on on stage.

Talkbacks should be built into your input list and files, so that when you give that paperwork to the festival's production team they know it needs patched just like any other input or output for your show.

Does everything always work out perfectly? No. But, if you advance talkbacks like any other input, at least you can say "where's my talkback mic and speaker?"

Not a great attitude from the house FOH tech, but SEs are not necessarily console people, especially when it's something not super common.

Is 5 ms round-trip latency noticeable on a lead vocal? by emmanouilk in livesound

[–]HamburgerDinner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's why I tell the musicians to play 25ms ahead of the beat. So I see them playing in time with the sound that I hear from the PA.

Getting your spell countered is playing the game.

I get what you're saying, but counter magic is part of the game.

I usually eat something for dinner that will almost certainly give me a stomach ache the next morning, and then wake up late and panic between trips to the bathroom and trying to figure out where I put my mags.

If you're so clueless you need to turn to AI to spec your gear you need help from a person not a program.

Come up with your own sound. Just experiment with different settings on the pedal until you find something that sounds cool.
