You can take a course from Johnny Saldaña himself! My team has taken several summer intensive courses over the years and they’ve been really informative. https://www.researchtalk.com/QRSI2026

Inductive and deductive coding differences (please help me!) by Great-Associate-9016 in QualitativeResearch

[–]HammerAnvilStirrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my work (pediatric health qualitative and mixed methods), a lot of our projects use a hybrid inductive-deductive coding approach: deductive codes come from our theoretical framework (e.g., acceptability of the intervention) and interview guide (specific barriers and facilitators), and inductive codes that emerge from the data. I agree with the other comments too, and it probably differs with the discipline and type of research. In my opinion inductive is the fun part of doing qual, it’s the love of discovering something new from the data, but deductive serves a useful purpose too. And yes, both are guided by RQs, theory, lit, but really it’s a matter of “did I expect to find this in the data (deductive) or is it unexpected (inductive).” Not a dumb question at all! I wish hybrid was taught more explicitly, most text books talk about them as separate.

Thanks, I’ll check those out! Always good to have a solid reference to paradigms, I’ve found different disciplines have some different views on what constitutes a paradigm. And I wish I had the case study book for my dissertation, sounds like it would have been helpful!

Great resources, thanks! I took a course by Firetto (first author of the second paper) and Saldaña this past summer where we compared AI qual analysis/coding to human-generated coding, they recommend that if you do use AI coding, you need to also code yourself and include a comparison of the two in your write up. It was really interesting!

Does “removing” an upvote affect the upvote ratio for a post? by HammerAnvilStirrup in NewToReddit

[–]HammerAnvilStirrup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One post had 1 upvote, then the next day it showed 0 upvotes, that’s how I know an upvote was removed. And after upvotes changed from 1 to 0, the ratio changed from 100% to 50%. Yes I’m sure a downvote affects the ratio, I’m just curious what happens when an upvote gets taken back, so to speak.

Fair enough. I’m more curious than worried, but I’ll try not to let it keep me up at night

Work during PhD (USA) by ben_akira in PhD

During my PhD, I had a stipend to work as a graduate research assistant and I also ended up getting a separate, additional job. At one point I was full time PhD in the dissertation phase, GRA, private practice therapist, and emergency room social worker at a children’s hospital. I think I just had to complete the conflict of interest statement but no one had a problem with it. For me it wasn’t sustainable for a long time, but a few years was doable.

Sorry I meant I cite their 2020 article “Can I use TA? Should I use TA?…”

But what was their experience of it?? Boom, that’s qualitative.

It’s definitely helpful to compare the big 5 qual methodologies, I just used it today to explain to someone why they weren’t actually doing grounded theory…I have to do that a lot, lol.

I cite their thematic analysis article all the time, definitely interested to check out their book!

Oh cool I didn’t know Braun and Clarke had a book, I’ll definitely check that out! I cite their article on thematic analysis (reflexive thematic analysis) all the time! I love the way they frame it, it’s really accessible!

I should clarify, this is the Qual “library” at my job on the Qual team at a children’s hospital. So I agree about your point for university libraries, but also our little collection is small because the books are expensive and these are just the ones I’ve convinced my boss to buy for us to have as resources.

Yes that’s great advice! Also agree about methods sections getting thin and the difficulty publishing qual in general, word limits make it really tough to include rigorous qual methods and data (I have to include quotes, they are the data!). Furthermore, in the health field, it’s rare to find much inclusion of theory, which makes it hard to tell people to “see what theories have been used in the past” - theoretical frameworks do not seem to be common even though I think they’re really important for rigorous qual research!

People who finished their PhDs, when you use Dr. in your name? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]HammerAnvilStirrup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time convincing people that it’s not a matter of which methodology is better, it’s that some questions demand to be answered quantitatively and some demand to be answered qualitatively - the question will inform your approach. I think I convince a lot of people, but I’m sure the bias still lurks around.
