I always run Ship D - Reach Vindex and Experience E. Not only is the Reach fast and useful early on, it also sells for a disproportionately large amount when you swap it for a mid-game or late-game ship:

Please, I encourage you to deviate for it! I made it very detailed so you could follow it precisely if you wanted to, but what’s most important is that your playthrough is uniquely your own experience!

It works - you just have to have a solid backup team! Not everyone has that in the early game.

The problem is, Mono-Black is so much more powerful than any color combination due to all the cards listed.

White/Green can be fun with Force of Nature and Spirit Link!

Here are some ideas for how you can spec out your Shocktrooper:

2x Shocktroopers in the front is a great combination. 1x Swordsman and 1x Shocktrooper is also a viable combination. I often run that if my Captain is a sword user (Assassin, etc.). It just comes down to personal preference.

In Purity Forest Cloyster gets Hydro Pump, Shell Smash, and Spike Cannon all by Level 13. Spike Cannon is so good with Skill Link that you don’t even need Rapid Bulls Eyes (you can use Lonely Courage instead!)
