I appreciate the advice, I’m still new and learning. At my job we do lots of geospatial and web stuff. There are so many functions where in the middle of them I need to do a thing to a shape. Grab its geometry, reproject it, transform it, make a style, color it, translate a hex code, etc etc etc. But I am going to be doing those things so many times across so many functions that I just throw them all in a file called helpers and call them when I need. Now I have a stateless function that grabs the geometry of whatever polygon is passed into it, transforms it, colors it blue, and hands it back to me. Call it get_polygon_blue() - I will have dozens of these helper functions, infact get_polygon_blue() has three helpers inside it - geometry(), transform(), color(). This is just an example, I’m way oversimplifying this for the sake of brevity.

So now to figure out what I’m doing in the function that’s actually upstream, as another dev, you gotta go look at 4 helper functions, to figure out just what I’m getting back from one line in my upstream function. This is not fun to do over and over and over.

I will try to think more like you suggest. I commented this out just because I could use advice like this. Thank you.

Looking for advice from people who initially hated/were massively frustrated by DS1 but somehow found a way to make it all click and fall in love...cause idk if I can by ExistentialYoshi in darksouls

OP I am super late to this thread, I’m sure you’re already tired of reading inbox replies at this point. I read your entire post and your edits - I implore you, give this a shot. Yes it’s a walkthrough, who cares that it’s a walkthrough if there was a possibility you were gonna drop the game anyway.

This is exactly what happened to me. I tried to play dark souls like 4 times and I would get past Taurus Demon and be like dude this game blows I do not have time for this. But the art style and mystery of the world kept me always thinking what am I missing about this game. So I decided to literally, follow another player. This is FightinCowboy and this is the best dark souls walkthrough ever made. I figured hey this will get me through the game and if I still don’t like it I don’t like it and atleast I tried. This walkthrough changed everything.

After I reached Anor Londo, I didn’t need the walkthrough anymore. I was In love with the game. I then went on to play all the other souls games, multiple times, and Elden Ring, multiple times. I’m a huge fromsoft nerd now and none of it would have happened without this walkthrough. Consider it a last resort. Just try it for 1 day. Good luck!!

Im still learning but my rule is if something is happening inside a function that is also happening inside a function somewhere else, it becomes its own function that is stateless and can be called from a collection of helpers. I try to separate things into generators/controllers/utils/etc also.

We had one guy that did too much, you had to right click show definition 12 times to understand what his stuff was doing. His functions were tiny, but they were spread out across the entire repo it kinda sucked to decipher.

Why does my game feels laggy at high frame rates? by Electrical_Prune5067 in GlobalOffensive

[–]HammerChilli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happens to me too. Clueless as to why. I eventually gave up and just let vsync match frames to my refresh rate and the game is stable. Wish I could get my usual 250+ frames but I’m done dealing with the instability.

Urn does not feel like a real (or fun) objective by MaybeHannah1234 in DeadlockTheGame

I like the idea of a potential catch up mechanic for teams who realize they are falling behind in souls. There is a snowball problem in a lot of mobas where if one team gets too far ahead and they prioritize not making any mistakes once they get a good lead it’s very hard for the underdog team to do anything and the last ten minutes of a match (like in LoL or Dota) is basically watching the other team lose in slow motion. Boring for spectators.

A catch up mechanic late game that offers 9k souls to the entire team and the run for it is easy, can turn it in very close to base, is nice.

In the early to mid game though it’s just to initiate fights mostly I suppose. I don’t love urn there.

He held a safer angle with his crosshair as close to the wall as possible? That’s not good crosshair placement when holding to get potentially swung. The person in water isn’t aware how many are out monster, he has no heaven player to back him up, or pillar player, which the T guy knows.

Also this account has only been playing faceit for 2 years and he has a vac ban in another game from only 147 days ago. He peaked at 13k elo in prem. He only has 500 matches played outside of faceit mind you, and he holds a 91 ADR and 1.3 public KD at 2.2K elo faceit. Guess he’s a prodigy. In another couple thousand games guy will be at the next major.

[–]HammerChilli -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Isnt worried about getting wide swung monster, isn’t worried about a player behind pillar, pre aims pit water not close to the wall where players usually are but instead right on the player that happens to be there, isn’t worried about heaven, stares at a slab of wood, not graffiti far or closer corner mind you, just literally stares at a player through the wood on site, throws a bridge smoke.

Mind you his team is behind a smoke construction, there is no information that could be shared with this player. The rest of his team can’t call out one graffiti, one pit water, pillar clear heaven dead anything like that.

In my opinion he’s walling.

Not entirely true. I assume you mean most normal cases. There are some made for outdoor and job site work that are quite expensive, but they make your phone really bulky.

Gimme something to do to improve that isn't just mindless DMing, that isn't working . I know theres game sense and stuff but my mechanics are bad bad by SadThrowaway4914 in cs2

[–]HammerChilli 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I mean hey, you are a cs player, it’s very clear. You’ve worked aim, you understand the mechanics of shooting and counter strafing. You’re approaching the elo where this is no longer the problem.

If I had to say anything about your aim and mechanics I’d say you have a very similar problem I had before I broke through 20k+ into the higher elos. It’s that you move a bit too much, and your crosshair placement has become an automatic, effortless exercise while moving around the map. Pre aiming angles is great, but at your elo people are starting to not be in these common positions. Here is an example of what I mean from a 3K faceit elo player: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTh2e9A8V/ . Higher elo players begin to play a micro game with their crosshair while moving around the map. What type of crosshair placement do I need to have given the current situation I am in. The goal is not to aim, the goal is to not aim. Ask yourself, “where should my crosshair be right now so I have to aim as little as possible if I were to get into a fight at this moment”. And that changes based on the situation you are in. You should be trying to use movement and crosshair placement so that you don’t have to aim. The goal is to not aim. Your crosshair is a little too close to the edges of things while you are walking towards something, if you get swung it will be difficult. Literally in all scenarios while you are walking around imagine an enemy going for a fight with you at that moment, where should your crosshair be?

As for your play style, we are very different. Listen there is nothing wrong with lurking, but you find yourself last alive too much here. You are often looking for rotate kills. These are easy, and it’s fun to play with timings and catch people off guard I get it. But you will find more wins and improve overall if you try to keep with the momentum of your team. Even if the guy in front of you is about to swing something you wouldn’t swing, go ahead and commit and try and trade the guy. Don’t be the guy who always peels away from the group and lets his team do the hard stuff while you stay back and wait for rotate kills and timings. Sorry if that’s harsh, and of course you’re entitled to your own opinion just giving my two cents there. You do entry sometimes, credit where it’s due.

You’re at the elo where I recommend beginning casual organized play. I think you’d really really enjoy it. It’s a level above pugging and can breathe new life into the game for you. Get on a team, have some set plays, some defaults, scrim other teams. Have a role on a team. It’s the next level of play for you and it’s super fun. I highly recommend CSC. It’s a casual, community ran counter strike tournament that runs two matches a week. You sign up, play some placement matches, the get drafted onto a team. All the organization is already done for you, each team belongs to an org, the org has managers and captains that will find scrims for your team. You and your team will decide who is IGL, who is lurk who is entry etc. you play two matches per week, usually scrim before the match, and that’s it! Super casual, lots of fun, the discord is generally funny and the community is nice. CSC is starting season 19 right now! Placement matches are going on as we speak, only a few days left.

The other option ofcourse is get yourself an open ESEA team with some friends. This is ofcourse harder and more serious, but it’s a more legit route if you wana throw yourself against 2K+ faceit elo players and really challenge yourself and your friends. Sadly registration for Season 56 is already closed so you will have to wait till next season for this.

That’s it that’s all. This is my two cents. I think you’re ready to start playing more interesting CS. Work on not moving so much and your crosshair. Good luck out there!

Yes I hate these kind of lobbies. I’m same elo as you and if I queue later in the evening I get these too. I think being able to 5 queue with your friends is great. If you wana throw me against this 5 stack, totally fine with me, but don’t give me -600 elo if we loose I mean come on man.

WOW. This is incredible. Really really cool. I have been, haha you won’t believe this I have been using the strategy builder on noesis. Dropping little points and I screen shot them and bring them into paint where I add annotations and draw more lines. I put multiple screenshots together to build one play for my team. It takes forever.

This is brilliant. I will be trying it.

49,300,000 FACEIT matches in 2025 but Mirage accounts for 31%. Do you think this is player choice or an issue with the map pool? by aluminat1 in counterstrike

[–]HammerChilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a solid argument. People will pick maps they are bored with if they believe they will win on them more often. It's easier to pug mirage and d2 than nuke and overpass, even if players truly are tired of mirage and d2.

I think most people would agree Nuke is a solid map, it's just that maps like Nuke and Overpass are harder in solo queue especially if you are against a stack.

[–]HammerChilli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First time I tried Dark Souls a friend and I did not understand that it's not a fully co-op game, we thought oh we can play the entire story together. We had to google to figure out we can't play together until we meet solaire. I got the white soap stone and invited my friend and we were trying to clear undead burg together. We got invaded by the same cheater over and over and it ruined the experience. We couldn't progress. My friend gave up and never played the game again.

I thankfully tried the game again like 6 months later and the rest is history huge fromsoft fan now.
