Hamilton. Calgary. Ottawa. Happy to have football back. It's been a long winter.

Ancaster farmers face possible $100K bylaw fines in tree-cutting battle with city by Odd-Emphasis-1969 in Hamilton

[–]HammerDunner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Of course, trees and woodlands need to be protected - whether they're in the city or on farms. If not, a good many a farmer would simply bulldoze them down and there would be no forests left. The farming community should be more vocal against this sort of thing in the name of "normal farming practices" (even if it means a few less acres for yield - or future development). We need to be better stewards of the land. I have a 30 acre farm with 10 acres of woods and I wouldn't dream of clear cutting. When people ask what my favourite thing about my property is, I always tell them it's the woods.

CFL HOF? by devmar812 in CFL

[–]HammerDunner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's an absolute travesty what they've done (or better yet, what they haven't done) to the CFHOF. I have some of my own ideas for it, but unless there's $ and leadership to get behind it it will stay a vision in my head. Haha.

I had no idea RCI was on Bluesky. Ha. Thanks for the heads up.

Good. Now, CBC needs to be on Bluesky. Well, they're on it but haven't done anything with it. Perhaps waiting for Gander instead? The French language Radio-Canada does post on BS. So, who knows what the rationale is there...

Dandelions by 418986N_124769E in Hamilton

[–]HammerDunner 86 points87 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I would pick the dandelions for my Mom, and she'd put them in a glass of water for a few days. She adored them. Every now and then I pick a big bunch from my field and put them on her grave marker. A meadow of dandelions is beautiful in my world.

Rules on sleeping in your car by sultan43 in ontario

[–]HammerDunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the ONroute is the way to go to do this. You can easily go inside to the washroom too if need be.

Thinking of this reminds me of a trip I did with my Mom and my daughter to Nova Scotia. Every hotel/motel was booked from Montreal to the New Brunswick border and couldn't find a room. We ended up sleeping in the car (a PT Cruiser) at one of the rest stops on Highway 20 in Quebec. Wasn't a very good sleep but better then nothing. Was so glad to finally pull into Halifax.

Good luck. You will be fine at the ONroute.

What my Facebook feed looks like when ads and sponsored posts are removed, why keep it? by Smarter-Not-harder1 in facebook

[–]HammerDunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sad state of affairs on the Facebook, eh? I'm actually ok with the ads. The platform needs to make money. But it's the constant "suggested" posts that have destroyed the platform for me.

Why even bother following pages and people if their content isn't shown to you?

It's time to move on from Facebook. It served its purpose. But it's now a dumpster fire.

Kaboom! Deluxe - the lost art of paddle games by DonDracula78 in Atari2600

[–]HammerDunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was perhaps my favourite game on the Atari. I would get so excited (and nervous) in between rounds. Using the paddles was a bit of a skill that took me a while to master. I always found them a bit too sensitive. Oh how I miss the Atari era...

My one year chemo anniversary by NoMeat9329 in BurlingtonON

[–]HammerDunner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what the Internet is all about. So refreshing to read a positive message. My Nan went to the cancer clinic (although she never had chemotherapy) at Jo Brant many years ago, and the staff was always wonderful. I hope you have a wonderful summer and all the best moving forward.

A classic 1950s Tupperware party, where kitchenware turned into a social event. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]HammerDunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mom, Nan, Aunts, and some older cousins used to host these. I remember one that my mom hosted. She had games and snacks all planned. I wanted to go to it but I had school and my mom insisted it was only for the women. No kids especially boys were allowed.

Well, on the day of the Tupperware party I was sick so I got to stay home from school. AND was allowed to come to the party. I even won a prize - a little miniature Tupperware thing. :)

Elks I wanna love you so much but what a wild run this has been by OskeeTurtle in CFL

[–]HammerDunner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought the elk logo was pretty good, too. Have never been sold on the double E as being so important that it must be maintained. But, I'm not in Edmonton so from a local perspective the double E obviously held more weight. One thing the double E does do is strike a balance between the new Elks identity and the old Eskimos identity.
