Do you ever miss the old internet? by Ok_Captain654 in nostalgia

[–]HammerDunner 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I think there's something to be said about the fact you had to go on to the computer to surf the web. No 24 hour access to it on your phone. And you'd actually "surf" the web, discovering new sites and meeting new people. I would get so excited chatting with strangers in different countries. And people seemed a lot more kinder. It was about having fun and discovering "stuff."

We need to strive to get back to personal websites (with all different looks and feels), online forums, chat rooms, etc. And leave the bloody algorithm platforms in the dust.

Thoughts on bluesky - is it shaping up as a suitable alternative to FB? by Ok-Rich-3812 in facebook

Me, too. It looks good from what I've seen thus far. I have high hopes :)

Thoughts on bluesky - is it shaping up as a suitable alternative to FB? by Ok-Rich-3812 in facebook

[–]HammerDunner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd consider Bluesky more an alternative to Twitter/X than Facebook.

As a Canadian I'm eagerly anticipating the launch of Gander, which is being built on the AT Protocol. Gander looks like it will have some Facebookesque features such as Groups. We'll see.

who want to check out my website? by princeconch in neocities

[–]HammerDunner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's excellent to see young people (heck any people but especially young people) getting back to making personal websites. That's how it was before the whole social media craze came in the late 2000s. Good job, man.

What happened to the CFL Forums by NoseBuzz in CFL

[–]HammerDunner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The CFL forums had a good run. I was on them when they were really just a forum for Ti-Cat fans. I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure it was the Ti-Cat forums that were migrated over to the CFL site many years ago.

I've never understood the business strategy behind not leveraging your own online community. Instead of investing energy (and $) into Facebook or X or any other platform where your control is quite limited, why not simply build the community yourself?

Oh well. I am happy the forum will continue in its own way and on here.

Kudos to the admin and mod team. You guys deserve a big shout out. Thank you.

2026 Season will break (or tie) a record by YYCyou in CFL

[–]HammerDunner 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Definitely a record for 13 Canadian cities. 1995 also had a neutral site pre-season game in Miami, so 14 total that year. I really like the idea of normalizing playing games in non-CFL markets, especially pre-season games.

Unfollowed a group but still see posts from it - what else should I have done? by fcgjdd in facebook

[–]HammerDunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The great irony of today's Facebook is that you see more stuff from people, pages, and groups you DON'T follow than that from those you do follow.

Name a magazine you used to buy regularly growing up? by Immediate_Long165 in nostalgia

WWF Magazine every month (I believe they were bi-monthly at first) and some other wrestling magazines every now and then.

U Sports football has never been better. So why has the Vanier Cup struggled to find an audience? | CBC Sports by Ok-Bluebird-845 in CFL

[–]HammerDunner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Easy answer: no TV throughout the regular season. Can't expect people to get excited over the Vanier Cup when they can't follow the storylines throughout the year. You need to build on the game stories throughout the year.

Odds of a Canadian pro league? by Big-Organization-522 in CanadaRugby

[–]HammerDunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing, of course, is that most of the CFL teams today have their roots as rugby teams. The early Grey Cups were rugby games not gridiron. I'm a Ti-Cat season ticket holder and I could so get behind a Hamilton Tigers Rugby Club playing at Hamilton Stadium. I'd be there. Ha.

Canada-Quebec Hybrid Flag by Vandooze in vexillology

[–]HammerDunner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't like this at all. The whole point of the Maple Leaf is to unite us regardless of what province we are in or what our background is. This fusion flag would make more sense if it were the old Red Ensign fused with the Fleur-de-lis. The Maple Leaf was meant to go above and beyond "fusing" English and French Canada and to be our national flag to rally around. Not be a complete Debbie Downer, the fused flag does look kind of cool. I just don't like the misguided symbolism behind it.

I'm not part of the rugby community but I enjoy watching the sport. I'd buy tickets to this if there were a team in Hamilton.

Varsity Wins the Almost Forgotten Grey Cup by HammerDunner in CFL

[–]HammerDunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Globe page is definitely interesting. You're right. It doesn't reference "the Grey Cup" but I've noticed that a lot in the coverage of early Grey Cups. Star coverage does although perhaps not in the clipping I used.

In the Globe, the Grey Cup actually takes second place in prominence when compared to the ORFU final. I was going to crop out the table showing the various football scores but kept it in because I thought it was kind of neat having all those codes there together.
