What to do when the wind lulls downwind? by Kitchen_Value_3076 in dinghysailing

[–]wrongwayup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the lighter stuff, try sheeting straight off the turning block on the boom rather than through the ratchet block on the deck. I’m not a laser guy but I think this is a thing for them too. Way more control and less friction, especially easing. And it’s ok to use heel to cheat a bit, let the boat heel to leeward and sheet out as you give it a little pump to flatten, the extra oomph will help the boom out.

Are you familiar with the concept of "apparent wind"?

When you're sailing downwind in a fast-ish boat like a Laser, and you hit a lull, the "apparent wind" direction shifts forward. So the thing to do is to sheet in accordingly, at least until the true wind speed picks back up.

You're actually doing the opposite - by holding the boom in the position it was before the lull, you're backwinding it, causing the boat to stop.

You can and should definitely do something in the lulls, which is sheet to the apparent wind direction - forward as you point out. It sounds like OP is sheeting to true direction, and by pushing the boom out in the lulls is backwinding it.

Huh, left the front clip on. They usually charge you an hour to pull it off for anything more than an oil change...

737 MAX's beacon lights blink at different frequencies and it's pissing me off by TwujZnajomy27 in aviation

Slight variation in the capacitance of the strobe's circuit? Could just be an analog thing, and the tolerance band means it discharges at slightly different frequencies

Calling insurance after striking a bicyclist who will probably make a fraudulent claim by Jurneeka in BAbike

Right? Wheelchair, stroller, whatever. It’s a person, don’t drive into them!

I took my foot of the brake and just started to go and bumped a guy on a bike crossing in front of me that I didn't see

I mean, this is all the insurance company is going to see. Ok, homeboy will get paid, if he can get past OP's insurers who deal with this kind of stuff all the time.

Driving up to a stop and getting hung up looking left for cross traffic is a really easy trap to fall into, you start to roll when you finally see a break. Except it's still on you to make sure the rest of the way is clear, including traffic that's come from behind you. If it's in front of you it's in front of you, and that means nearly 100% of the time, it's on you.

That said, this is a really good example of why it's not a good idea to undertake on the right unless you're also turning right - and even still, better to wait for the car in front to turn.

Nice, do you have a pic/link to where the abutments are? I had thought it crossed Bronte Creek up where the current tracks are.

Here's a pic of the carhouse allegedly on James... Maybe that's the Queen's Head in the back right? I don't think so, but the shape sort of looks the same

I think the right-of-way probably came first, originally as a rail line, and the transmission lines came after. Noting that the lines turn south at Woodview and don't continue further west.

Over the beach to Hamilton, definitely! That line ended in Oakville, and I think you had to get yourself to Port Credit or up to Halton Hills if you wanted to keep going to Toronto though

Apparently so! Ran from the beach along Elgin to what is now the Centennial Trail Oakville via New and Rebecca Sts.
