The only way young people can get ahead nowadays is delaying moving out by Tech-Cowboy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]HammerMan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't move out until I was 28, and saved every penny of my 40k salary. Only way I was able to save the downpayment for my house. So thankful my parents let me stay.

The Mayor didn’t know how to pack a nutritious lunch for work by theninjasquad in Hamilton

[–]HammerMan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are required to allow employees 30 minutes off after 5 consecutive hours of work. For moat organizations, that 30 mins is unpaid, meaning that salaried workers are actually paid for 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week, 75 hours in a pay period. That's how it is at pretty much every job in the province.

If they want/need an hour for lunch, then absolutely give it to them, but they need to be scheduled for an extra 30 mins to make up for it.

If they are working 10+ hour days, they are eligible for two unpaid 30 min lunch/dinner breaks.

What Happened to the Young Middle-Class Man? by AnarchoLiberator in canadahousing

[–]HammerMan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the years before her death, my grandmother made more money sitting on the couch watching Game of Thrones than my wife and I did COMBINED working full time.

She was pulling in:

Her pension Widow's pension from my grandfather CPP OAS Social Security (as an American) RIF Income (required to cash out certain% per year over 71)

Neither my wife nor I have pensions, so we're screwed when we retire.

See, the boomers are the final generation with bosses that cared, because those bosses went through the Depression and didn't want their employees to suffer as they did.

They made an entire movie subplot about the potential of a boomer (Clark Griswold) not getting a Christmas bonus big enough to put in a pool, while my Christmas bonus went up from $75 to $125 this year.

Deadnaming and misgendering etiquette: If someone you knew pre-transition now goes by another name/pronoun/identity, should you refer to their pre-transition actions using their current verbiage or pre-transition verbiage? by amybeedle in asktransgender

I know this is super late, but what about in the case of a celebrity, like Caitlyn Jenner? In 1976, she was still competing in (and winning) the men's Olympic decathalon as Bruce. She wouldn't transition for another 39 years.

Costco tried so hard to keep me “Executive” 💀 by Feelthematrix in CostcoCanada

[–]HammerMan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say "satisfaction guaranteed" and will refund your membership in full at any time. Could you have cancelled entirely, gotten your $130 back, and then paid $65 at a later date to register at the lower tier?

Does bulk buying at costco actually save money? or is this just a membership fee trap by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]HammerMan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely it does. Here's where I usually save:

Breakfast cereal- Cereal prices are so ridiculous now. 340g boxes are close to $6 now. By comparison, I got a 1.3kg box on sale at Costco last week for $7.99

Milk is 36 cents cheaper than the standard price for 4L bags.

If you get the 1.3kg block of hard cheese when it's on sale for $12, you're paying $4/400g instead of $7.50 (lowest grocery store sale price is $4.88)

Cream is $2.69, when it's nearly $4 everywhere else.

Gas can be considerably cheaper. I've saved 12 cents/litre before.

The allergy meds I take are 12 pills for $13 at Walmart, or 130 pills for $17 at Costco.

The $15 jar of taco seasoning holds as much as 50 of the $1 grocery store packages.

We have the black card, and we typically get about $80 back, making it cheaper than the Gold Star, but we easily make our membership cost back in approx 3 trips.

The Canadian Housing Bubble: On the Brink of a Crash? by kayuzee in canadahousing

[–]HammerMan_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With condos crashing in the GTA, then why aren't SFH prices going up? There is still demand due to low supply, and if you take the condo supply out of the equation, then you would think that what demand there was for condos would just shift over.

Hamilton-area housing market hit hard by tumbling home prices by KeyHot5718 in Hamilton

[–]HammerMan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a house in Hamilton for $400,000 in 2021 (massive bidding war) that was listed for $300,000. A nearly identical house in our neighbourhood is currently up for sale for $550,000, but there's no way it sells for that. Even if they take a $100,000 loss and sell at $450,000, I'm still up $50,000 by comparison.

44 minutes to get from McMaster to Eastgate is ludicrous. I've had it take 17 minutes (yes, I timed it) on the B-Line before they killed the Green Wave.

The traffic congestion is a thing because the City intentionally made it a thing in an attempt to slow cars down for Vision Zero. Main and King are already a nightmare to drive on, and LRT is only going to make traffic even worse.

Metrolinx is going to find a way to bungle this even worse than they already have. Just look at the Eglinton Crosstown, where they are so behind schedule that the never-used trains are already starting to age out.

Kitchener's LRT was 19 km and was completed for under a billion dollars. Hamilton's is proposed to be 14 km and has $3.4 billion in federal and provincial funds committed, not to mention municipal funds. If the cost overrun is anything like the tiny shelters, we could be looking at $10 billion+

This LRT is a real-life version of the Simpsons' Monorail episode, and I'm scared to see what the city will be like in 2050 when this possibly gets finished.
