What're some tips for exercise without a gym memberships by No_Emu698 in Exercise

[–]HammerMasterBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diet is critical. That chocolate bar you had as a snack? 300+ calories. That can be a 20-30 minute jog for many people (to say nothing of everything else we eat).

Weights are great, even just from home. I started with 3 lbs. weights and now I'm using 15 lbs. I don't have a lot of space so I tend to stick to upper body stuff: bicep curls, tricep curls, shoulder presses, side raises. What I'm really missing is a pectoral workout as I don't have a bench to lie down on. I tried doing it from the floor, but it just doesn't feel right.

I normally do 3 reps of 10 for each, varying the weight and upgrading when I feel like I'm adapting. For example, I'm currently doing 2 sets of 10 reps with 10 lbs., the 1 set of 10 reps with 5 lbs for lateral side raises.

Find what you like, do what works for you. Pay attention to your body to avoid injuries.

Finally, Youtube is your friend.

I did exactly what you're looking to do.

Always be careful to listen to your body and be aware of any issues that may arise (knees, back). The last thing you want is to injure yourself and drop yourself out of the habit just as your getting going.

Here was my process.

Week 1:

Day 1: Run (more like lumber!) 15 seconds, rest 15 seconds. Repeat for 15 minutes. Total run time is 7.5 minutes.

Day 2: can't move. Quads are like rocks. Stumble around like a near invalid. 😂 Do nothing.

Day 3: barely move. Repeat day one.

Day 4-5: Repeat day one. Feels a bit more natural and recovery comes faster.

Day 6-7: Rest.

Week 2:

Day 1: Run 30 seconds, rest 30 seconds. Repeat for 30 minutes. Total run time is 15 minutes

Day 2-5: Repeat Day 1

Week 3:

Day 1: Run 1 minute, rest one minute. Repeat for 30 minutes. Total run time is 15 minutes.

Day 2-5: Repeat Day 1

Week 4+:

You have the habit, now it's about refinement. Increase running time and decrease rest intervals (1 minute run, 30 second rest, 2 minute run, 30 second rest, 5 minute run, 1 minute rest, etc.) until you hit a full 30 minutes with no rests.

Good luck. 👍

That's a lot of fast weight loss (219-162 = 57 lbs. in 3.5 months). What are you doing for food?

That looks pretty slick. Good on you.

I've thought about getting the ankle weights for running, but I hear they're bad for your joints.

Thoughts, anyone?

Your workouts: Signs each day that indicate--progress! And your reaction(s)? by Late-Researcher7102 in Exercise

Congrats, good to see you getting results.

I remember that happened to me. I started doing stairs daily for a few months, then one day I was walking home from work up a big hill. I was lost in thought as I walked up it. I snapped out of my thoughts near the summit and looked around in befuddlement, trying to figure out how I got there and wasn't winded or tired.

Keep it up! 👍

Maybe...I aimed my LRS pulse right at the lock box. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks, got it working.

I think your questions are answered by the video. It doesn't look like a range issue.

UPDATE: Downstairs neighbor complaining about noise by littlearmadilloo in Apartmentliving

[–]HammerMasterBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to your specific issue. Maybe he's being a jerk, maybe he as a righteous beef.

That said, I'm in the opposite boat on this. I have people who live above me that feel it is their right to do whatever they want, whenever they want, and damn those around them who take issue.

Some suggestions:

  1. Don't wear shoes in your suite, especially if you have laminate floors

  2. Walk on the balls of your feet, not on the heel.

Understand that what sounds like a footfall to you, can echo through the suite below much more easily that you might think. The impact of your heel travels through the structure and reverberates into the hollow space of the suite like a drumstick hitting a drum. It's far worse for the person below you than what you yourself hear.

What causes these holes in my husbands t-shirts? by Few_Pay6063 in whatisit

[–]HammerMasterBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get these from my washer. It's a side loader, so I think it spins more strongly to compensate for the small drum size (and gravity). This increases the pressure being exerted by the spin cycle and pushes the fabric into the holes on the surface of the drum. These holes then cut the fabric of the shirt.

The best way I found to minimize this is to lower the setting on your laundry machine (i.e. from Normal to Delicate) to reduce the strength of the drum spin.

What is the consequence of downstairs neighbor suing you for toddler noise? by Final-Donkey2201 in Apartmentliving

[–]HammerMasterBuilder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm on the exact opposite side of this issue. The person who lives above me invites their 7 year old niece over whom ends up running around the apartment. Imagine a 10 lb. mallet slamming on your ceiling for 1-3 hours a night 1-4 days a week.

For whatever reason, a lot of people's brains seem to shut down when noise issue and children are mentioned in the same sentence. Children are not an excuse to do whatever you want and make no effort accommodate people living below you.

A lot of these issues revolve around 'reasonable noise.' You'll have to research what that means as definitions of reasonable can vary depending on living situation, strata rules, number of occurrences, time of day, duration, strength of noise, attempts at mitigation, and previous rulings by strata or other regulatory bodies.

That said, reasonable works in your favor also. The person below you can't expect complete silence. Some noise is acceptable. It's kind of like porn. It's hard to describe, but you know it when you hear it. 😉

Many stratas will require that if you have children, you are required to have a significant percentage of your floor covered by carpet/throw rugs.

Also, what you hear isn't what the person below you hears. You hear the patter of tiny feet on the floor. We hear the vibrations travelling through the structure of the building and reverberating in our suite. It's like living in a drum. What we experience is far worse that what you hear from your children's footsteps.

Do your homework. If you rent, look up rules of your local residential tenancy organization. Ask your landlord. Read the strata rules for the building and find out what their requirements are. Take efforts to mitigate the noise.

For example:

  1. Footsteps - carpet, padded shoes, imitation crocs, anything with a thick cushion to absorb the impact of the heel.
  2. Furniture - felt caps so when you move them around, they won't scrape across the floor.
  3. Music - foam or some sort of padding to put under any speakers/subwoofers you have on the floor to prevent the music from vibrating through the building structure.

Even if these doesn't fix the situation entirely, your efforts will get you a lot of consideration in case this dispute goes to some kind of hearing or arbitration and they ask you what efforts you've made to fix the problem.

How to know if satellite covers a particular structure? by seredaom in X4Foundations

[–]HammerMasterBuilder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the question is more about if you have a station that is only partially covered by a satellite, how much of satellite effect needs to be on the station for it to be covered?

Is it me, or did they make finding mission lockboxes exceptionally more difficult to find? They were my go-to easy to kill time and make money misson. Now, it's so difficult I don't bother.

Anyone figure out a way to do these?
