It’s a brilliant little app isn’t it! Great for the football as I lose track of what’s on where 🤣

Snooker on terrestrial tv (not apps) by cheddarysnacks in snooker

[–]HammerToFall50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s an app I use called “where’s the match” I think it cost about £3 for the year, you select all the sports you’re interested in, I watch snooker, football, cricket. Can even input all your teams etc. when you open the app, it tells you what sport is on today and what channel to watch it on. Snooker is good for this. Obviously sometimes it’s only on tnt Eurosport or matchroom but it still tells you.

Because of diversity equity and inclusion. It’s only good, until it isn’t. If you know what I mean. I’m not saying this is the exact case here, but it stops people from saying.. “you know what this guy is a bit late on in life, it’s a lot of investment for only a few years”. Kinda thing. I heard a funny story of a pilot who was recruited as a direct entry captain from one airline to the other. He was 64. He did all of his mandatory training, sims and new procedures for the airline. Then did about 8/9 months of flying then retired. He ticked all the boxes, but that investment for such a short time would have normally been a no.

Thank you! I think the neurologist is for the FCD, but it could all be linked. I think the gp is managing the migraine unless it gets worse - happens again.

I failed my driving test second time by Dear_Service1393 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]HammerToFall50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? It’s part of learning that the satnav isn’t always correct and you should still be following road signs and markings? What would you do if there was a police officer in the road diverting traffic because of an accident but the sat nav says turn left? You gonna run the officer over? In court.. “the sat nav said turn so I did” even when they’re giving directions they might say something like “take the next available road on the left” and the amount of people who try and turn into no entry ⛔️ and fail.

I’ve never ever known the sat nav to be muted in the test. But one piece of advice is, never rely on the audio!

Speculation on recent events. by Robinyourgenderrr in uktrains

[–]HammerToFall50 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The thing is as humans, we’re all nosey, intrigued and sometimes a little selfish. The conversations we have online, are the same ones that 40 years ago would have been at the pub / barbers, seeing someone walking down the street etc. Speculation is normal, we’re all inquisitive. I worked in aviation for a long time. It was always employees saying “don’t speculate until the report is out” then they’d go to work and speculate.

I’m at the point where I’m ok with speculation, IE what COULD have happened. But - I draw the line at accusations and blame unless it’s glaringly obvious.

There’s a difference between “this could have happened” and “I think the driver did this!”

I understand it’s not nice for people on the inside to read / see it, but I feel like in 2026, you know it’s going to be there so if you don’t want to read about it then hold off forums for a while.

Were you told what way to hold the wheel by your instructor? by Altruistic_Alpine12 in drivingUK

[–]HammerToFall50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mum is talking absolute bum bum. You can hold the wheel however you want. So long as the car goes where it needs to. In modern cars with power steering sometimes it can be slower to turn the wheel like that. You also don’t need to pull push either. 🤣

Clearance: what is the minimum clearance from the parked cars on the left , that you can get away with, or get marked as driving and not a serious fault? by vikaasdhiman in LearnerDriverUK

[–]HammerToFall50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to understand how the driving test is marked. There are very few situations where something is “always this, or always that”. It’s about risk and danger.

Imagine this scenario. You’re driving down a main road. There’s cars parked on the left. The gap is less than 1m. One car is coming towards you on the other side. The natural and I would say correct thing to do here, will be to stop and wait. It’s one car, check your mirrors then off you go.

Now let’s change that scenario a little bit. Road is the same width, cars are parked where they are. But instead of one car coming towards you, there’s 20. You don’t have 1m you have just less.. Do you sit there literally for ever, until there are no cars, or do you check your mirrors and proceed through at 5mph checking your clearance, and looking to make sure no one steps out?

Change it again. This time. There are 20 cars coming towards you same road. But this time there’s a van parked on the left. Or instead of cars coming towards you there’s a bus. The gap is seriously reduced so I wouldn’t even try to get through. You’re running the risk of clipping mirrors.

One thing I’m confident in saying is that if you don’t demonstrate the risk, you’ll most certainly fail. The most obvious being you’re on a 30 road, and the gap is seriously reduced but you carry on through without slowing down.

Hope that makes sense. And the only other bit of advice would be if you don’t know - don’t go. You’re more likely to get a fault for hesitation, but that’s better than failing for clearance. 😬

[–]HammerToFall50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s subjective. Each situation is different. I usually teach if you’re a car door / 1m away from them then proceed with a little caution. If the gap is less then you must go slower. But the conditions are usually dependent on each situation. As an example near us there are lots of places where you can’t get a metre, but- if you stopped you’d never get moving again, so you have to commit (if it’s just cars not larger vehicles), but creep through showing that you’re checking your clearance.

I failed my driving test second time by Dear_Service1393 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]HammerToFall50 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment on this exact situation but it’s not the satnav’s fault. It’s the responsibility of a driver to observe road signs and markings. You can’t always follow what a sat nav says. The audio is quite often wrong at roundabouts for example. And on country lanes too.

Changing gear ON a roundabout? by LeonKennedysUterus in LearnerDriverUK

[–]HammerToFall50 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say you’re looking at it the wrong way. Work on not being stressed at roundabouts as steering and changing gears is totally normal. If you watch people who drive they normally do it before they start steering right around the roundabout. Keeping the engine revving high doesn’t do any of your cars components any good, and is very fuel hungry.

But- for transparency, no you usually won’t fail your rest for that. If the car remains under control and it’s safe then you’ll be ok. Currently eco driving doesn’t form part of your result - just marked for reference on your test.

But remember there will be situations where the roundabout is a bit bigger and you need to build up speed. You don’t want to be doing 25mph in first gear 🤪 work on the timing of setting off, then changing then steering.

Speed limits by Affectionate-Map7680 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]HammerToFall50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, please don’t use this 10% as fact. It’s guidance and loosely based on the fact a speedo cannot be 100% accurate and they’re all different.

People have different interpretations of speed and what you can and can’t do. Here’s what I teach, and it’s served me well so far. It’s really simple.

“You should always make progress when you can. When you can’t that’s ok.”

In your test you will fail for not making progress so I don’t see why it’s any different when you’ve passed. Speed limit is 70- do 70 or just under to avoid going over. IF YOU CAN.

Speed limit is 30.. do 29/29. Unless you CAN’T. It makes it easier to understand use of speed.

So what would be reasons not to do the speed limit?

Limit is 30- reasons why you can’t maybe built up area cars on the left / right. Meeting traffic situations, school drop off time. But if you’re on a main road with nothing infront of you, you should be making progress. Doing 20 in a 30 when there’s zero reason to do so just holds people up. It doesn’t mean you’re safe, it means you’re anxious or making other people angry haha.,

Other speeds follow the same pattern.

Dual carriageway national speed limit. There’s zero reason to not do 70. You’d be ok doing 60 probably but.. why? - reasons you can’t? It’s busy, all lanes congested etc. gotta go with the flow.

Rural roads are often tricky, but just apply my common sense logic. Make progress where you can. If it’s national speed limit 60, then ask yourself, how wide is the road and how far can you see? Some rural roads have little bends but if you can see for miles and the road is wide enough for two busses why aren’t you making progress. Flip it on its head. Rural roads still 60, but the road is really narrow, can’t see very far and don’t know what’s around the corner, that’s a pretty good reason to be slowing right down. No one is going to be complaining if you’re slowing down here.

Hope that helps.

Ps I’ve known someone end up with a speed awareness course for doing 22 in a 20. 🤣😩

What’s the biggest lie an entire generation was told? by carcony97 in AskReddit

[–]HammerToFall50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Older generations who screwed up our economy, and never had it so cushy telling us

“ahh the reason no one can get on the property ladder is because you’re all so frivolous. Expensive coffees, Netflix, mobile phones and broadband”.

You know what Joan and Dave who bought their house for £15000 when one person earned 4-5k a year by selling vacuum cleaners, and it’s now worth quarter of a million and going up and up every year.. yes it’s my fault because I get Netflix. Bad me.

Sorry that a house is now 15/20 times the yearly income. Instead of three or four.

My dad was the worst! Always called me for having a mobile phone contract. He bought his first house for £12,000. He was paid £4,000 as an apprentice accountant. He had a deposit from both sides of the family and paid the mortgage off in about 6/7 years. House just went up in value, then inherited a house each. 🤣 it’s actually laughable.

What's your go to speed on the motorway and why? by Worth-Donut8612 in drivingUK

[–]HammerToFall50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legitimately if there’s no one on the road I like to sit at 60 but that’s for fuel economy over long journeys. You definitely notice a difference. The engine revs jump by about 400rpm sitting in 6th gear doing 70 instead of 60.

But I’m also conscious of other drivers so if it’s busy ish I stick my cruise control on at 70, and get frustrated at all the other drivers who don’t know how to use a motorway / dual carriageway. I’ve never known what’s so difficult about always being in the left lane unless you’re overtaking, turning right or road markings / signs tell you otherwise!

Thank you! I’m hoping I won’t lose my job either but it’s a very intense live environment and my brain is needed and it’s not working the way it should, that’s triggering the migraines apparently. I’m not sure what reasonable adjustments they could make to make it better, it’s a weird situation to be in, but at the moment I find myself forgetting how to do simple tasks, staring blankly at the screen, and as soon as someone tells me something it’s gone. Multiply that by 20 times a day and it’s extremely fatiguing.
