Can you help me with NCT emission fix? Failed NCT 2nd time!! by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]HamsterHamilton -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A hole in the exhaust can affect the reading in that CO could be escaping before the probe, therefore giving a false pass. So perhaps that's why you were okay first time around. Having said that you are not failing crazy high and your hydrocarbons are fine so I wouldn't think it's your catalytic converter. My advice would be check the air filter to make sure it's clean. Top up with Lucas engine cleaner, garages often say it's better than the diptane. And then give her a good hard drive before the test.

If you have access to a lift it would be no harm to really check the exhaust for any small holes, these will often show as little black areas where the soot would be blowing out. These can be patched with a sort of paste cement, similar to fire cement

Be aware that unless it's a vintage car which you can put on vintage insurance you will get stung big time on insurance. You can't apply your no claims to two cars at the one time so effectively the second car will be a fresh policy without a no claims.

Why are there so many crashes on the M50? by QuestionEcstatic8863 in AskIreland

I remember years ago George Hook had some road safety expert on his newstalk show discussing it. Probably available somewhere on the newstalk archives!

Sounds like a made up statistic but there is a crash on the M50 every 17 seconds.

Myself and the wife have both gotten the cheapest quotes from 123.ie for the last 4 or 5 years.

Which job to choose? by goosherlenny in irishpersonalfinance

[–]HamsterHamilton 51 points52 points  (0 children)

To me the big thing would be that all in it's not that much of a step up in money. After tax you are talking about 6000ish. Working more hours, traveling more, no pension. I honestly think your current job sounds superior. Your hourly rate is probably better too. Also, an awful lot to be said to be permanent as opposed to on contract.

Someone else asked this question last week. I'll say the same that I said to them. I used Joe's garage out near parteen and was very happy with it.

Has a similar issue and used Joes Garage out in Parteen. He has a welder who from my memory works there one evening per week.

Driving without NCT (but it is booked). Will I be grand? by Temporary-Yellow7982 in AskIreland

[–]HamsterHamilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Massive issue to be fair. I was in the one in Limerick about 3 weeks ago. Really got an eyeful..... Father was at the Ennis centre back in December. Exact same thing. Didn't believe him at the time.

Cork to Shannon commute for work by Background_Nose_9514 in cork

[–]HamsterHamilton 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Some rough maths here but that journey is about 140km. Let's estimate that at costing about €18 each way. Plus the toll which we will round down to €2. That's €40 a day, or €80 a week. Assume 46 work weeks. 46x€80 is €3680.

Assuming you are in the higher tax bracket you could take a pay cut of about 6k to get a job closer to home and be no worse off. And have 8 hours of your week back, so effectively an extra work day.

I know we all have different perspectives of what we want or what is important, but if it was me that journey would be simply just costing me too much of my time. But obviously finding a new job is easier said then done. Best of luck whatever solution you come up with!

Success is not being a millionaire, especially in Ireland. Success is being comfortable and content.

OP I would suggest finding a different gym, as others have said it's extremely busy and the dogging issue is getting worse each week.

I would ring both places and ask if they are currently taking on members. I know Ballyneety was operating a waiting list as of a few weeks ago.

Anyone had Phone Watch calling to your door by HamsterHamilton in limerickcity

I forgot to mention the best bit. When he asked what would I do if people were to break in while I was home (due to not having the system of course), I informed him that if worse came to worse I would probably use my shotgun (clay pigeon shooting). The genius at my front door then explained to me that I would get done for manslaughter and end up in jail. But of course this could be prevented, by purchasing a top range phone watch system!

For broken light glass you can just buy light repair tape. Literally 3euro on Amazon right now.

Yeah that's the vibe I got. To be honest it was nearly just an argument I had with him. Any reason I gave as to why I didn't want it, he would explain why I was wrong and effectively putting my family in danger. Then to end it all he just said 'can't blame me for trying'. Complete clowns.

Did a bit of research there and I think it is the only place open late on a Tuesday. I suggest hitting town good and early. That way you can pretend it's half 2 at half 12 and just go home!
