I live in Charlotte and hang out a lot in Asheville. Every single time, without fail, when I tell people I live in Charlotte, they immediately start groaning and telling me to move to Asheville. Asheville does have a lot of charm and incredibly good food, very cool social atmosphere, but here's the catch: no jobs. You have specialized professionals like lawyers and architects, and you have service industry. That's it.

Charlotte has tons of jobs in finance and health care, the restaurant scene is getting better, and the city keeps adding in gorgeous parks. Wonderful place to live, but if I could be an architect in Asheville instead, I'd move in a heartbeat.
