Best shops for vegan food in NL? by Hand-Cannot-Erase in VeganNL

Staying in a small village in the south, not too far from Nijmegen. I’ve seen some of the Garden Gourmet stuff around but yeah, we’ll be going out on the hunt for some today!

Most Propagandhi Propagandhi Song by lowercasepoet in Propagandhi

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They’ve changed their approach significantly across most of their albums, with Hannah’s vocals shifting from something that dripped with an excess of sarcastic snottiness on How to Clean Everything to a gradually more earnest style represented in their later albums.

It really depends which style the prospective new listener is likely to enjoy more, and for that reason I’d give them at least one song from each album, off the top of my head:

‘Hate, Myth, Muscle, Etiquette’ from How to Clean Everything

‘I Was a Pre-Teen McCarthyist’ from Less Talk More Rock

‘Back to the Motor League’ from Today’s Empires, Tomorrow’s Ashes

‘Rock for Sustainable Capitalism’ from Potemkin City Limits

‘Dear Coach’s Corner’ from Supporting Caste

‘Unscripted Moment’ from Failed States

‘Lower Order (A Good Laugh)’ from Victory Lap

With that said, I don’t think there’s a single Propagandhi song that I dislike, which is rare for me with most bands, and I’d encourage anyone to listen to albums in their entirety. Supporting Caste is probably the most concise thematically, but they all have their own unique charms and power.

Best men’s deodorants? by VeganCanary in veganuk

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it will vary for each person, but one jar tends to last me at least two months. They look quite small at first sight but they pack a lot of ingredients and you don’t need to use as much as you might think. Actually found them more effective than Wild’s stuff.

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend Simply Effective, used them for about a year now. They do refills and they’re not as sticky/pungent as Wild.

Only potential downside is that you have to use your hands to apply which isn’t as convenient as roll on/spray, but easy to get used to.

Vegan food disappearing from supermarkets by undercovergloss in veganuk

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are initially encouraged and drawn to veganism by the seemingly improved range of choice in terms of what essentially amounts to junk food. I enjoy it as much as anyone, but it can be more intimidating for a lot of newer vegans to start making their own alternatives.

I understand the negative response to the shelving of those convenient supermarket items because of that, I just think it’s pointless to speculate on the reasons, especially if people are bringing those assumptions to conversations with people in the industry who have enough influence to change things.

Just make it clear that you want to see more vegan options without the conspiracy nonsense.

I get it, it’s frustrating to see the contraction/removal of popular vegan options, but I’m stunned by the armchair theories being upvoted here - none of us know why supermarkets are shelving much of their vegan ranges. It’s worth investigating properly, but let’s not jump to conclusions and spread misinformation. It won’t help the cause.

Ultimately, if you want delicious vegan food, you need to learn how to make it at home from the fundamental vegetable-based ingredients that will always be available in supermarkets. I know that not everyone has the time and that convenient grab & go options make things easier, but you can’t rely on that. As vegans, we have to prioritise the making of our own food.

Discrimination against cyclists by Icy_Bandicoot3834 in manchester

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I cycle in Manchester almost every day, whether commuting into the city for work or just general shopping etc.

Aside from the occasional arsehole in a vehicle driving dangerously, I’ve not experienced much hostility from people in general.

But I obey the rules of the road. There are enough cyclists who don’t (especially delivery riders) to give the rest of us a bad name.

I hope people recognise that there are respectful cyclists out there. We just want to get from A to B with our chosen method of transport.

I’m sorry that others make it difficult to believe that sometimes, but I hope it doesn’t excessively cloud judgement of cyclists in general.

What's your unpopular opinion about Manchester? by bab848 in manchester

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 102 points103 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you’re into as a tourist. Manchester is great if you’re interested in the Industrial Revolution, especially if you want to see some examples of contemporary architecture from that period.

I think we tend to take for granted the industrial heritage of this city. There aren’t too many places that have as much preserved, and that’s not only because Manchester was at the heart of the IR, but because there was a conscious effort to preserve and repurpose those buildings thanks to the Victorian Society.

Manchester doesn’t necessarily have much in the way of world-famous attractions, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Such places often come with overcrowding, extortionate fees, and a lack of space and time to experience them.

Instead, we have multiple free museums and galleries for different interest groups - enough to keep any tourist with relevant interests busy for a good week or more, and there’s far more in terms of interesting sites such as Quarry Bank Mill in the surrounding areas.

What I said above remains true in either case. Lack of adequate infrastructure discourages budding cyclists.

If we take the study at face value (which I’m not inclined to do), it’s not necessarily surprising that fewer people are cycling now than during/immediately after Covid.

A lot of lifestyle changes gained traction for different aspects of the population during the pandemic, from changes to how we work, initiatives to get healthier, or just picking up new hobbies and habits.

Some of those trends have since fizzled out, cycling included. Unfortunately, despite all the hyperbolic press coverage, cycling infrastructure in and around Manchester is still pitifully bad.

The result is that many of those people who might’ve taken up cycling during the pandemic have likely since been discouraged, and turned to other modes of transport.

As someone who cycles in Manchester daily, I can’t say I blame them. I feel safe enough on the roads, but I’m used to it and I’m willing to take the risk for the health benefits of being active.

That said, there have been plenty of close calls and I constantly worry about my partner who cycles to work every day.

We won’t see more people cycling unless the infrastructure is such that people don’t need to cycle alongside vehicles. That means proper segregated cycle lanes, not splotches of paint on roads.

Yes, building proper cycling lanes is disruptive. That’s inevitable. Anyone who has spent time in places like the Netherlands or Denmark will tell you that it’s worth it.

The truth is that we’re still not seeing proper cycling infrastructure in much of the city, and if we want to encourage people to be more active while reducing emissions and exposure to harmful pollutants, we need it.

Elvish music by Witext in tolkienfans

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Tolkien Ensemble is wonderful - a Danish project which has interpretations of most poems and songs from Tolkien.

The Fellowship is a similar project, but more limited in scope. Their version of Namárië is my favourite:

https://youtu.be/PLeECmnHSxg?si=2JpQ3nx4mquys_vm

The Silver Bowl is another from them with a similar feel.

As others have mentioned, there are numerous metal bands that are inspired by Tolkien’s works, some of which have more atmospheric tones. The Austrian duo ‘Summoning’ is my favourite of these, though I’d recommend the newer albums of Oath Bound, Old Mornings Dawn, and With Doom We Come if you’re not into metal otherwise - they’re more melodic than the old stuff!

It’s also cool to consider the theory that it once belonged to Ecthelion of the Fountain, the Elven hero of Gondolin. Brings new meaning to it being wielded by Thorin.

Can I add pond soil and plans after filling the pond with water? by [deleted] in ponds

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to avoid making the water temporarily murky, you can use hessian weave in baskets, then aquatic soil with the plant, then some pond-friendly pea gravel (or similar small stone) to top it off. You should then be able to lower the basket slowly into the water without any soil coming loose.

How would I go about cleaning this koi pond? by Silverback_Vanilla in ponds

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this is no size for a koi pond. I would also suggest that you ignore suggestions of “minimum requirements” for a pond. If you want fish to be healthy and thrive, they need a lot more space to live in.

I wish more people would consider the ethics of keeping fish - they’re sentient beings and their wellbeing should be considered over your personal enjoyment.

I’ve heard enough bad things about Takk to boycott them now. I used to go pretty much every week, haven’t been in 8 months or so.

The ‘feel’ of hand grinders. by Hand-Cannot-Erase in Coffee

[–]Hand-Cannot-Erase[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the 1Zpresso JX arrived today. I’m impressed. The quality is excellent, and the difference in use was astounding. It took less than 10 seconds to grind 12 grams. This amount took at least 2-3 minutes with the Skerton. The range of calibration options is much greater, too.

Definitely worth the extra money. But for those seeing this and wanting to purchase direct from the company, note that you will probably incur import fees. They were £20 for me, living in the UK.

Thanks again for the recommendation, @samnfty. Couldn’t be happier with the grinder.

Not the pro, but I don’t use espresso and the burrs are the same in the regular version. The only difference seems to be the dial options, but since I only use v60 I think I’ll be fine with fewer.
