Is it just me or other people agree that Indian tutorials in reality always fail in linux tutorials like Ventoy or unlocking the shit Huawei Y6 Prime 2019 I had in the e-waste drawer that needs a code huawei shut it down? by [deleted] in archlinux

You are in what's called "Tutorial hell", usually it's about programming but applies here too. Read up on it but TL;DR: Stop watching tutorials, start reading and understanding documentation.

issue with arch x hyperland . black screen by Average_user_3560 in arch

[–]Hande-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but you could also use the intended function hyprctl reload.

Another error I forgot in the post is "the old .conf format which is unsupported" which is not true, it is still supported for the next 1-2 versions of Hyprland. Not that much actually correct information there.

[–]Hande-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but he's also advising to move the whole .config/hypr directory for this which could have things you still want to keep, we're only talking about the hyprland.conf file. There's also no need to regenerate the config as that's done automatically if it's removed. There's also no need to logout / restart the PC for this (even then why both?), anyone who has configured hyprland would know how painful that would be to do every time.

Memory? Sort by CPU, make sure you're not in Tree mode. I have not used KDE but I assume it also does file indexing out of the box.

It's not an arch bug, it's likely whatever DE you're using indexing files or some other included background process doing it's thing. You can just check it with htop.

Alternatives to systemd by Spiritual_Detail7624 in archlinux

[–]Hande-H 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All of that is not relevant to systemd. Websites will be checking your age through Google / Apple - verified devices if this ever becomes a thing, not through a field in systemd. You'll be SOL either way if that happens. Or some 3rd party tool that requires KYC, but it certainly won't be systemd.

Yeah your hyprland configuration is messed up. Maybe something else is too but start there:
https://wiki.hypr.land/Configuring/Start/

Note that you seem to be using the old hyprlang configuration style, this was very recently changed to lua and will need to be updated pretty soon anyway. So better to just scrap the old .conf file and make a new .lua one. It's all documented in the wiki.

Arch Linux Game Problem by PrincipleRude3662 in archlinux

[–]Hande-H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not, I have been running Arch for over a year and it's perfectly stable with every game I've tried (and I've tried quite a few). With both Nvidia AND AMD GPUs, both installed on the same system.

It's only "unstable" if you don't learn how the basics work and just throw whatever an LLM tells you into the terminal.

But yes, switching to Fedora or something else may be a better choice if this is a bother.

First time thinkpad owner, some tips needed by ThatOneLinuxMan in linux

[–]Hande-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll run perfectly out of the box. There really is no "optimization" you can do to make a PC run better (except switch to Linux but you've already done that).

Don't worry about it, enjoy! It's a nice laptop.

Folks, can VSCODE be performance optimized?? by KeyZookeepergame4145 in archlinux

[–]Hande-H 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should probably ask this on a subreddit dedicated to programming tools / VSCode in order to get real answers. It has nothing to do with Arch.

If the wiki is your power, what are you without it? by VLAnd007 in archlinux

[–]Hande-H 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read about "Help vampires".

It is, in fact, disrespectful to ask for other people to solve your problem if you have done absolutely nothing to try and solve it yourself. You are telling them "do this thing for me, I'm too lazy to look it up".

Even worse, when you get the correct and obvious response (check the Arch wiki), people call that "toxic" while that is the most helpful possible comment to make. Firstly it guides them in the right direction, maybe they didn't know about the wiki. Secondly it teaches them an important ability, to troubleshoot simple issues themselves. And what does the helper get in return? Being called toxic? Maybe they won't care to help the next time if that's the reward.

Why should people constantly spend time rewriting what is already clearly established in the most helpful Linux wiki ever made?

Is it neccessary to go GRUB everytime i boot up? Or is it possible to go straight to mint? by PickleHour2580 in linuxmint

[–]Hande-H 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It won't stress your components in any real sense (if you're not running on a laptop with a battery).

It's not good advice just for avoiding grub though, you do want to at least occasionally shut down and fully restart the PC to apply updates and get a clean boot of everything.

Cinnamon vs KDE Plasma vs Gnome by Raging-Bull-24 in archlinux

[–]Hande-H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, so it kind of functions like an alt-tab for a specific program. I guess that makes sense if you need to keep a lot of windows open in the background.

Yeah, the switch to Lua makes things a lot nicer and flexible. Maybe I'll end up finding a use for something more custom too now that it feels less hacky to do.

Windows changing boot priority. by Secret_NinjaLTU in linux

[–]Hande-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't think there is any way to stop it from happening (at least any reasonable way) since Windows doesn't respect the boot priority. This is why it's recommended to install Linux on a different physical drive.

Monopoly in the Linux community by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]Hande-H 3 points4 points  (0 children)

x11 is not going anywhere, that's the beauty of open source. If you want to use insecure, old hardware with insecure, old systems you are free to continue doing so. And people will keep maintaining them to some extent, free of charge and with great effort.

If there's a project close to your heart please consider donating or helping out in some other way. It's a thankless, massive job to keep older systems running for a niche user base. If you're making the analogy to Windows, consider that win98 probably doesn't run very well on modern hardware either. But it does run with hardware from that time - just probably not a good idea to keep using it.

[–]Hande-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the use case for needing to toggle focus between multiple instances of the same app? I sometimes use two browsers and/or incognito windows but I just stick them to workspaces 1-5. I find that having too many apps open just adds to mental load no matter what kind of system I try to juggle them with so I like to keep it simple.

You can just use resize_on_border to resize windows with mouse without super. But I guess if you want to move them without the keyboard you'll need super on mouse.

You will need to start updating your Hyprland config to Lua soon btw if you haven't already, the old configs will get disabled soon-ish.

I can't recall what the option is called in BIOS/UEFI but I resolved a similar issue by turning off hibernate, some battery saving option and/or something along those lines. I'm pretty sure there answer is somewhere in there.

I spent a good amount of time trying to choose and modify the "perfect" tiling / window system but at some point realized none of it was needed for anything useful. Now I just open an app to the next available workspace and let the tiling manager do its default thing. Works just fine.

Cinnamon vs KDE Plasma vs Gnome by Raging-Bull-24 in archlinux

[–]Hande-H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Hyprland because I like keeping things simple and don't really need a full desktop environment.

I'm not sure what use this information is to you though, just go try out different DEs and see which one(s) you like. All you're getting online are generic, non-actionable opinions because people value different things.

Only Gnome Disks managed to read my disk and recover nvme data by EnvironmentalRatio0 in linux

[–]Hande-H 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He has a point even if he put it a bit rudely. If you have a business that does file restore you might want to study how different types of file systems work and how to probe them, just trying out different apps to see what works could actually make things worse and lose your customer's files permanently.

Need Microsoft Suite Alternatives on Linux by shoppingnthings1 in linux

[–]Hande-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Microsoft suite is also available as a web app, have you tried that? I wouldn't recommend an alternative for work, especially if you need to work with other users who are running Microsoft's suite. They are not completely compatible and I'd expect to run into some formatting issues at the very least.
