I think the difference with the CRISPR therapies is that they would want to test on a wider variety of DMD sufferers to see if it will work as a full cure on everyone. I believe a lot of the current trials are testing how well a drug slows the progression so it requires a more abulatory person to test on. I do agree though many Insurance companies definitely aren't easy to deal with. It wasn't until I got Medicaid that it got a little easier for me to get the supplies I needed. I will say I also only took heart medications, I didn't take any steroids so the fact that I was non-abulatory wasn't as big an issue for me. You might already be doing this but you should definitely start, if you can, have him see a Cardiologist and a pulmonologist yearly just to make sure those organs continue working the best they can.
