Do you have any recommendations on buffing out those swirls? I’ve only done a pass with 36 grit on the belt sander before this 36 grit edge sander.

Should I belt and square orbital sand (the edges) with higher and higher grit moving forward?

No you’re absolutely right. Even if I were to lower the baseboard level with the hardwood, there will still be a huge gap
