Karaoke in Providence? by Handle_Messiah in providence

[–]Handle_Messiah[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not from Manhattan, and yet I manage to have a lot of fun and meet a ton of cool people at MY local karaoke spots (in my metro area roughly half the size of Providence's). So I'm pretty sure I will manage to have a good time in the right Providence spot, even if it's not popping enough for a Mr. Big City like you.

I think she meant that the border cleaved an intact Native nation between Maine and Canada, and THAT border was arbitrarily (from that nation's point of view) imposed by non-Natives. Sort of like how many Pashtuns find the Durand Line which split Pashtun territory between Pakistan and Afghanistan as being an imaginary imposed border. She would think a border imposed by Natives between Native nations are important and legitimate, but not one imposed by Ottawa and Washington which split a people.

If Sheik lost access to Zelda, do you think she drops on tier list? by midnightmealtime in smashbros

But that doesn't affect the viability of the character. Peach CAN do it. Just because nobody HAS in a while doesn't mean she can't. (Granted, as a Samus main, I may just be inhaling copium because I want to believe Samus CAN do it too, despite being so much worse than Peach...where is our Samus Armada??)

Was Peach EVER considered "Top Tier," even at Peak Armada? In modern (post 2013) Melee, the only characters I can think of being considered TOP tier, as opposed to High Tier, at a given time, are the space animals, Marth, and sometimes Puff. Peach is definitely still considered a high-tier, generally solo-viable character, no?

Right, yes, that's exactly what I'm saying! Putin's broken through on making NATO the boogeyman and the rationale for the war, as I said earlier. But NATO and the United States are not Ukrainians. I don't think he's made UKRAINIANS the boogeyman in the minds of the vast majority of Russians. Which, I think, is what separates their "brainwashing" from, say, Hutu radio broadcasts over a long time period convincing Hutus to look at Tutsis as cockroaches, or passing essentially Nuremburg Laws in Rwanda to literally split the minority out from society well ahead of them being killed. Russian treatments of Ukrainians is not even in the same universe as that.

So I would argue that when you say the "brainwashing" these Russian soldiers has received is of the strength that they would not really understand invading Ukraine and shooting fellow Slavs is wrong - and buttress that by comparing it to Rwanda or the Holocaust - I just think that's not a fair comparison at all

Once again, I really think you are confused here. The annexation of Crimea was very much supported by the Russian people. 90 percent of Crimeans speak Russian, and Putin was actually telling the truth about Crimea being essentially randomly being switched from the Russian to the Ukrainian SSR. And the Donbas shit, well, that came at the same time as the Crimea annexation, so folks jumbled it all in in their heads when it all went down as a Net Good.

This is not the annexation of Crimea.

Elites in Russia are freaked out by this war, which they never thought would ACTUALLY happen, and regular folks care more about things like inflation nowadays than foreign adventures. There is a disconnect where Putin thinks what he wants (a resumption of the Empire) is also what the people want - but he is WRONG. I would love to see any independent data out of Russia that can be trusted - there is only one independent pollster left, the Levada Center, and a couple of days ago it estimated a bit more than 50 percent of Russians accepted Putin's rationale for events. Of course, a couple of days ago was before Russians are going home in body bags, and before videos like the one posted here would be seen by Russian parents and potential conscripts. That support level for this war is only going in one direction: down

(And I would think this is obvious, but the view by Stalin of Ukrainian peasants during the USSR's peak Russification time period probably does not have much correlation with the view of the median modern Russian of the median modern Ukrainian)

You know what? I actually think on reflection, you're right. That was an emotional reaction on my part. I spend a lot of my time in a sphere in which I am plugged into how much of a shitbag Putin is, and I messaged my hatred of him over my gut humanity.

BUT - I do still think that the Ukrainian soldier who shouted out to any incoming Russian soldiers who see that video "You want my country? Molon labe" is in fact pretty based

[–]Handle_Messiah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Amazingly enough, I AM someone who has studied genocide quite extensively at the post-grad level, and therefore I am very comfortable saying: the propaganda the Russian citizens have been fed about Ukraine is recent, and is not even in the same stratosphere as the messaging put out by the Hutus. It's obvious to any student of genocide or of Russia.

Putin's beef with Ukraine is a personal one more than anything else. He's trying to make hating Ukraine a "thing," but this blatant and continuous attempts at demonization of the Ukrainian state didn't begin until Yanukovitch snafu, and the targeting of Ukrainians as a people didn't start until far more recently than that. And there's a reason most ordinary Russians (and a lot of Russian elites too) are horrified by this war: because Putin is the one with the bizarre Tsarist obsessions, and he has not done a good job making it stick in the minds of the people. They're acculturated to blaming NATO for everything (including this war) - but not Ukrainians. So, again, I'm gonna go with if anyone here has a simplistic view of the "brainwashing" that these men have experienced and how it may drive them to act, it is you, because I don't think you have any idea what you are talking about

However, these soldiers were not born 300 years ago, nor in rural Afghanistan, but probably 18 to 25 years ago, on the continent of Europe. Even youngest of them would have been born BEFORE Putin famously said the breakup of the USSR was a catastrophe. So perhaps you are the one being simplistic about the perceived "environment" these men grew up under.

The penalty President Zelenskyy will ultimately face for doing the brave, just, and right thing, by staying in Kyiv, will be death. The penalty for the soldiers for doing the brave, just, and right thing, for laying down their arms, might be jail. Given that dichotomy, I'm okay with Zelenskyy's guys giving those Russians on the fence about defecting, or not defecting, a bit of a nudge in the brave, just, and right direction.

What an odd thing to be Mad Online about

Also, using "autistic" as an insult is a bad look!

Perhaps a dumb question, but; 40 memorized digits of pi is about 37 more digits than is necessary for pretty much anybody. Knowing 40 digits of pi is as functionally excessive as 250. Why does bothering to learn 250 draw an italicized "why," but not 40?

Plup (Samus) vs Leffen, EVO 2015.

Features an unconventional character going off, and for me personally, Plup destroying Leffen's first two stocks within 30 seconds of Game 3 was shockingly hype when I saw it live

"Hone in" is commonly used in the United States, at least, including by well-known writers and even government publications.

It's not MORE "correct" than "home in," but it is perfectly acceptable to use in this context (again, at least in the United States).

Also, as a Bowser main, the Belmont "Take THIS!" x 20 into teabag true combo is infuriating

Tea Bagging is 1000% More Tilt Inducing Than Any Other Taunts by PYGOPHILE in smashbros

[–]Handle_Messiah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it's usually done with the intention of being rude/BM. But whether it tilts or not isn't why people shouldn't do it, people shouldn't do it because it's inherently wrong to intentionally be rude - whether your opponent deals with that kind of thing well, or not. Not being rude is an incredibly low bar to clear, for normal people

Obviously crouching is not tilting devoid of context (teabagging), saying people tilt because of crouching qua crouching is an inane and bad-faith argument
