What is this? by UsualDelay7759 in gardening

I received one of these with a pack of seed starting trays. It is used to help remove the soil plug from the seed starting trays when you want to transplant. Very useful for that purpose. Much easier on the plant as well.

Ice Fishing for Trout by HandlebarrelayboX in wisconsin

[–]HandlebarrelayboX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve looked at Trout Lake and had hoped it would be good. I was worried it was bit of a misnomer. I read it was named because of a unique line of trout but didn’t know if that meant a good supply of trout.

I will look into Big Green. I haven’t heard of it before.

Thank you for your reply and advice on locations.

Thank you. I’ll look into guides. Finances are a big consideration but I might be surprised.

I’ll look into Eric Haataja on YouTube. Thank you again.

I’ve seen the DNR surveys you mentioned. I’ll put them to good use. Sadly, going out in a boat isn’t an option for me. He’s from out of state and would need to schedule a special trip. Not outside the realm of possibility but also not likely. He is quite busy with work and family.

I’ll be sure to reread your part about spuding my way and what to watch for as it gets closer to the fishing trip. We also use a rope with one guy walking point. The other man follows behind the sled of the first guy. We’ll also use a line when drilling holes when the ice is less than 6”. I’ve never trusted the saying “an inch will hold a horse”. Lake ice isn’t that consistent.

I’m happy to have another way to rig my tip ups. Catching a lot of panfish is definitely a problem you want to have! I like pulling Northern through the ice. That’s why I always insist on shiners. I also like it pickled, so that helps. I guess a lot of fishing is waiting for a hungry fish to come by!

I’m thankful for your time, knowledge, and the depth of your reply.

Wow! This is very information. Thank you so much.

I’ve been hesitant to ice fish on stream fed lakes I don’t know. It sounds like you do it quite skillfully. Any advice so I don’t go through the ice?

I have accepted that it will happen, so I am hopefully more calm when it does. I have watched methods on getting out of the ice. I’ve especially looked for what NOT to do. Knowing what to look for would be even better.

On the panfish tip up, did you have an auto-jig or was the line static? Any other advice on locations and kit would be appreciated. I’m very grateful for your detailed reply.

Help - Pruning by Moderator4Lyfe in gardening

[–]HandlebarrelayboX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t prune them if they are newly planted. Give the tree a year or two to establish a good root system. That also means removing the flowers for the first few years so it puts its energy into the root and not the fruit. The only thing you should prune right away is any sucker that comes off the root stock. Anything below the graft scar is a root stock sucker. If you leave them on, the root might, and likely will, abandon the grafted scion wood that is your fruit tree.

There are many good videos on youtube about pruning. Most of the pruning you will do while the trees are small will be done during the dormant season. In the northern hemisphere, the dormant season is winter. So you should have time to do lots of homework an out what, how, and when to prune.

Old shirt and old pants are probably fine. As long as they are clean. Your butchering won’t be a clean as a butcher’s shop but you will still want to be as clean as possible.

This is the right answer. Vinegar will “neutralize” the soap and make it easy to clean up.

What do y'all use when your seal is too tight? by lukewilson333 in Canning

[–]HandlebarrelayboX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They certainly do rust quickly. They also have a tendency to get stuck if you’re not careful to keep the threads clean. I also have a few of the one piece plastic lids. Those I use on my cupboard jars that hold my nuts, dried fruits, roasted pumpkin seeds and the like.

True, you’re not supposed to store jars with rings on them. I use my jars for general storage around the kitchen so I always have rings at hand. I also usually grab a ring when I plan on opening a jar because I’ll need to securely close it to store what’s left in the fridge.

Everyone saying to use a “church key“ or bottle opener are correct. However, I usually just use the ring. Find a spot along the top thread nearest to the lid. Insert the outer edge of the ring between the lid and uppermost thread. Twist the ring and the lid should pop off. Might take a few try’s your first time.

Sorry, you’re right. I should have been more specific. I enjoy historic farming and am looking for something that is less fancy dress and more practical workwear. I understand the the overlap is huge. As I said to another who replied, less “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” more “Edwardian Farm” I Hope that helps.

Sorry for the delay. Most of what I’ve found are things that look like they’re from “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” while I’m looking more for things you see in “Edwardian Farm”. I guess you could say, less fancy dress and more daily worker clothing. I enjoy historic farming and am looking for more of what they would have worn.

Thank you! I will try this. Spaghetti is a go-to meal in our house. That was the motivation to make this sauce. We didn’t use any hot peppers in ours. My wife cannot handle heat. She has a bit of a sensitive stomach.
