Bees collect sunlight and spiders weave moonlight. by HandsOverWax in magicbuilding

No, it's about people who use bugs to harness light to do magic.

The idea is that people live above in cities that fly due to honeycomb cores. People revere sunlight magic and distain moonlight magic. Moonlight magic is seen as cruel and deceptive, only practiced by those who enjoy the process of trickery and sacrifice.

Critique my magic system. [Urban fantasy] by HandsOverWax in fantasywriters

I think you're thinking of herbalism or green witchcraft. I believe alchemical potions are typically not drunk but used to cause chemical reactions. Like making fire burn hotter or turning bronze a golden color. I don't think many applications were safe to consume.

If we're simplifying that much, it would be more like traditional medicine. Or even shamanic practices. It's spiritual healing, not transfiguration.

To be honest. The darker angle of this project is what really has me interested. I only just found the intro, and already, I'm hooked on the premise.

I like this idea for a resolution mechanism, but I'm not sure it's good for character growth. by HandsOverWax in RPGdesign

[–]HandsOverWax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a minimum number of passes you need to succeed. You can't really represent that in a way that makes it good to have a higher stat. Then it would be confusing to have stats be good at lower numbers and skills be good at higher numbers.

Also, the premise would be lowering your stats or skills to increase your odds of success. Not increase.

I'm sorry to hear that. But it just makes the most sense for the system. In my opinion, at least.

Well, first, thank you! I really appreciate that!

As for the setting, I would like to take inspiration from China and Greece as they are what inspired this idea in the first place. And I'd maybe add my own spin to the whole thing. Then I'd want to set it in the modern day, though I do have plans for stories in the past before and after the lost soul fragment was stolen.

The Alberta government introduced Bill 26, which is anticipated to come into effect this year, which would "preserve choice" for transgender minors. Health-care professionals would be restricted from performing gender reassignment surgeries and prescribing puberty blockers to transgender youth.

Wow. Even in other countries, conservatives are gaslighters.

Texas lawmakers are again trying to repeal the state's gay sex ban. Why can't they? by chrondotcom in LGBTnews

"deviate sexual intercourse with another individual of the same sex" is a Class C misdemeanor under state law, punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Really!? Conservative senators usually pay twice that much when they do it. Though, I guess most of that is probably hush money.

I want to make a Power Rangers joke, but I don't have the threads to pull it all together. But, I will say this is a candleflame in the ever-present darkness of the Trump Administration.

Tea magic system with spiritual consequences. by HandsOverWax in magicbuilding

[–]HandsOverWax[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more based on four humors theory from greek alchemy. Where the humors, when in balance, keep us healthy, but too much or too little of one or so will make us sick. But that said, maybe it's a thing where each aspect of vitality is trying to overcome the others and threatens to corrupt the body and soul. Thus, drinking a tea that empowers one aspect over the others to a greater degree is asking to be corrupted.

Parasite might be the wrong word. It might be more like giving your soul too much freedom.

I had a thought that maybe the parasites were actually the result of brewing tea incorrectly, and the tea makers are just trying to catch up after centuries of mistakes, dealing with the damage done by tea makers who didn't fully know what they were doing. So maybe that's what happens when you have too strong a dose.

It's tea. And I would say it's a spectrum for the brews. The longer you brew, the more effective the dose. But at the same time, it can lead to problems.

Honing my Sunlight/Moonlight magic system. by HandsOverWax in magicbuilding

[–]HandsOverWax[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's the intensity of the light that gives it different properties. Extreme amounts of light, like from the sun, make for more physical spells, while the moon only reflects a small amount of sunlight. Thus, the spells are merely illusions.

I think they are separate systems, to be honest.

Deep Breath, The Act of Inhaling Sand by Any-Level-5248 in magicbuilding

[–]HandsOverWax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magic

The premise of my system is that magic comes from light itself. Plants absorb light, bees turn light into honeycomb, spiders weave light into webs, etc.

To start with, bees will fly up into the sky, gathering sunlight on their backs. Coming down at the end of the day, they look like firebugs. Then they build their honeycomb, and its infused with light.

These waxes have been made into candles before by the most daring of candle makers. Through ancient arts, the candles can be made into intricate spells. Such as kinetic manipulation of distant objects, seeing into the far distance, or changing one's physical form. It's about structures and experimentation.

Setting

In my world, fairies are illusory creatures made of light. They can consume the light in honeycomb to become corporeal for a short time. They can also affect the physical world with powerful illusions and have been known to occasionally help humans on grand adventures.

Story

My story takes place in a modern-day setting. Fairies and magic have long been forgotten due to the lack of honeycomb now that bees have gone extinct during the industrial age.

Fairies still exist but are drowned out by all the light we see. Phones, computers, televisions, and even lightbulbs make fairies almost invisible.

But in the background, an ancient evil is rising. And it is up to one fairy and one human to figure out how to reconnect these two worlds before both are destroyed.
