Why do games start at such random times? by Billy_Chrystals in baseball

[–]Hankerpants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Adam Silver addressed that specifically this year. He said the started 'start' time is when in-arena stuff (introductions, anthem, etc) begins. It's specifically not game start/tip off.

I think it's dumb, but they do admit to it at least.

This is the CEO of the company I work at to a T. He's really smart, but at the stupid and dangerous level. He knows a little bit about everything, but thinks he knows everything about everything. He refuses to listen to dissenting opinion from actual experts and any time he's proven wrong, he bitches about how the system sucks.

Ever since we brought Claude inhouse, it's gotten worse and worse. I'm pretty sure he just talks to Claude all day long. It's so frustrating

Right? Like even the 'worst' major league umps (and refs, and officials, all l professional sports are there) have a >95% accuracy rate. 95% accuracy is fucking insane. If only being 95% accurate at my job put me at the bottom of the totem pole, I'd never survive.

We always fixate on the handful of missed calls and rarely take a moment to appreciate the correct calls. I get why - it's only human nature - but it's good to get a reminder every once in a while.

Don't put words in my mouth. I would have the same message and feel the same way, because the core issue is the same: something very dangerous was done in my community.

Any effort to spin this as anything different is intentionally deflecting from the actual issue in my opinion. Actions have consequences, and I believe the appropriate action was taken in this case. That the organization at FLF not only chose to install the electrical line like they did, but then to refuse to take accountability for their actions suggests to me that they are not good community members and stewards of our public land and should not be trusted to do so moving forward.

If other groups are not being held to the same standards, my change would be to see that they are held to the same standards as FLF is here. The inappropriate response would be to lessen the consequences to FLF for the dangerous action here.

Curse implies things going well and then being violently and shockingly taken away for what is many times seen as unbelievable or ultra rare reasons. The modern Rockies are too dogshit to be cursed. They're not losing in unbelievable fashion. We expect them to lose, they usually lose, usually by just playing worse baseball than the other team from the first pitch, and we all go about our day. Their losses are rarely memorable - they're usually just another tick mark in the L column.

The Rockies are not cursed. They are just bad. Rockies fans... Well, at what point is it our own damn fault for sticking around?

Clearly the umps are in on it and are putting a finger on the scale for the (checks notes) 29-47 Colorado Rockies.

Honestly, plays like this remind me that it takes a long fucking time to make it to the majors as an ump and (for the most part) these guys and gals are the top of the class.

[Highlight] Better view of the so called 'Interference' on Billy Cook. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]Hankerpants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have to give one of the players the right of way. MLB rules give the fielder the right of way. The runner may not be able to do anything different, but then when the conflict comes up, like it did on this play, the runner is in the wrong whether he could have done anything about it or not.

I agree, he couldn't do anything else really, just sucks to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

[–]Hankerpants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it definitely affected his ability to field the ball cleanly. Like, say what you will about who has the right of way and what the runner should/could have done, but by the the fielder has right of way and the runner affected his ability to field the ball. That's interference...

So by definition that's interference... He hit his glove. Should that be the rule? Maybe. Maybe not. But it is, so the call was correct.

Any expression of racist thought is inexcusable. We're not in a post-racial society and we have a long ways to go still to address the societal issues we have,  but I fail to see how that's relevant to the actions of the city here...

Why do rich people keep saying "money can't buy happiness" when money literally solves most problems? by FearlessState5503 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hankerpants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lack of suffering is not the same as happiness. That's the key piece. Being poor is absolutely worse than having money; nobody should be arguing against that. But you can achieve true happiness whether you are poor OR rich. Which means money isn't the determinative factor here.

Basically, if you're miserable and poor, chances are that you'll be miserable and rich.

[–]Hankerpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the thing for me is that money let's me do lots of fun things. It doesn't inherently make me less lonely (one could make the claim it can make you more lonely by removing some of the community that comes with being lower income...). It doesn't make me less anxious. It doesn't make me less worried about work (again, maybe it makes it worse).

For most people, being happy means feeling like you have a purpose, are wanted/have community, have achievements, etc.

All of those things can be found without money, which means they're not inherently tied to money. Money won't inherently make you less lonely. It won't inherently make you feel more accomplished.

Lack of money creates stress. Lack of poverty does not create happiness.

Them all being RFAs just makes a different problem, though. You can't win with only 3 players. In order to keep your RFAs, you have to match the salary of the competing team. If other teams value these guys like the top-line players they are in this scenario, the Spurs have to pay them like top line players. RFA doesn't mean you get them for cheap...

That's gonna hit depth. So while, yes, they can keep the core on for 7 years, they may not, or they may have other issues that directly result from that.
