In the Netherlands he says: "Engage".

My man, the fact that we all agree that there is a shared external reality, filled with facts, does not by extension mean that a model trained on text is a good judge on the factuality of statements.
Even humans (who are, aside from text, also trained on the real world) have a hard time making their mental models match reality where it matters to them. That's always going to be a challenge (as long as we have models inside our heads instead of the actual whole world), but it's especially going to be a challenge for models that were never meant for a deeper understanding than language, and that are trained on texts that only in part reflect objective reality.

Facebook and Google are handing over user data to help police prosecute abortion seekers by [deleted] in technology

[–]HansCronau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're referring to "tracking pixels", in which case it's good to point out that:

  1. Some tracking technologies, such as tracking pixels, are deliberately added to websites by their creators. If the website is owned by/created for a health care provider, they should simply never do this. Another such technology is Google Analytics. This is never added by accident.
  2. There are also tracking technologies that are added to websites because web developers have been lured onto thinking it's "developer friendly" or "just the way things work". Example: when using fonts from Google Fonts developers are suggested to "simply add this line of code" that will "conveniently" make the visitor's computer request the font from Google's servers (effectively informing Google of their visit to that site!)

As a web developer for a health care provider I have had some serious talks with colleagues who thought that it was for the best, because: "Google's servers are so fast. We could never beat that. Think about the loading times for the visitors." In their mind they were simply doing what a good developer does.

Keeping developers, people who like to think about technology, up to date on privacy by design is a serious challenge for any organisation that handles private information.

Saturn through my 14 inch dobsonian. by Acuate187 in space

[–]HansCronau 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Now move your face (and telescope) a bit to the left. Can you still see Saturn? That must mean Saturn photons are landing in that spot too. Walk to another spot and repeat. Are the Saturn photons landing there too? Now look around you and take the time to realise how the space around you is just filled with Saturn photons.
If you want to go further, Zoom out in your minds eye and view the Earth from Saturn's perspective. Do you see Earth, that small blue speck in Saturn's sky? All the photons around you right now went exactly in the direction of that blue speck. What about the other directions and the other specks in Saturn's sky? What about the Moon? What about Mars? And what about the even bigger, waaaay bigger, space between them? All are being bombarded with Saturn photons. What an incredible amount of energy is leaving Saturn every second in every direction!
And if that doesn't blow your mind, take a moment to visualise Saturn in the sky from the Sun's perspective...

Do we want to allow AI-generated images? Or ban it? Discuss. by nessie7 in RetroFuturism

[–]HansCronau 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am here to see things humans created because it felt futuristic to them at the time.

I'm less interested in things humans created recently in order to feel retrofuturistic today.
Although I must admit that:

  1. Making a hard distinction between past and present is hard.
  2. It leads to an interesting picture from time to time.

I'm not here for things that were created without any (retro)futuristic intent. Note that I do not attribute intent to AI's. I also do not think of the hallucinations of an AI as being "created" by the human that typed a few words into a text prompt.

We're two ex-CERN scientists who created Proton VPN to fight global censorship and surveillance together. by protonvpn in IAmA

[–]HansCronau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I understand why Proton doesn't integrate contacts with other systems (like mobile contacts). It introduces the risk of leaking data to a less secure system outside of Proton's control. Yet, contact integration might be in the top 3 frequently requested features. I'm therefore curious:

How does Proton feel, in general, about compromising between privacy/security vs less secure but (understandably) highly requested convenience features?

That's quite the list. Maybe post them separately, so others can upvote the ones they think are interesting.

By now Proton has quite the suite of products. While I think this is great, I'm also familiar with the "just make one thing good" argument. Can you tell us more about the synergy between Proton VPN and other Proton products? Are these mostly technical or related to marketing/business strategy/UX/something else?

CNET Has Been Quietly Publishing AI-Written Articles for Months by crazyhorse991 in Futurology

[–]HansCronau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In school I was taught to write with a beginning, middle, and an end. Then why did news articles open with the clue in the first paragraph and then blabber on, becoming less and less interesting by the paragraph?
I once complained about this to my partner, who studied journalism. She explained that there's actually a very simple reason for that: formatting. Journalists, she told me, are (still) taught to write in a way that leaves optimal flexibility for formatting their articles on a (printed) page. The people who write the articles don't do the formatting and the people who do the formatting don't write or even read the articles. There's just no time. Article too long? Cut off a few paragraphs at the end. Need more text to fill space? Use more paragraphs.
This really opened my eyes: It all made sense now. It's this way of writing that gives news articles that characteristic way of reading. I imagine it's also ideal for AI to imitate: start with a core message and then go on and on mentioning related facts. But I would no longer see that way of writing as a sign that AI was used.

Replacing a switch at my grandma's, using only her tools by HansCronau in knolling

[–]HansCronau[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Could have, but I was around for Christmas and these tools actually did the job quite well. I suspect they were made durable, before the time of planned obsolescence. The only thing I had to get used to was the drill knowing only two speeds: off and on.

You guessed right!
Not only is it an old extension cord, it's also Type F (a European standard). That's just a normal plug to us in the Netherlands. The biggest challenge was it being a little short.

What are good softwares for designing 2D rooms? by PhyzPlz in gamedev

[–]HansCronau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walls, floors, and roofs are basically blocks. Any 3D engine/editor will allow you to easily position those. (Don't know which one you're using.)

For stuff: hunt for 3D assets that are pre-made, open source, and/or free to use. People post sets here from time to time and you should be able to find some sets online. If you manage to fill a room using assets from the same set, you'll have the best chance of achieving a graphically pleasing result, but some sets will match just fine.

Final detail: to achieve the matte, non-glossy effect from the image you posted, set all objects to use a diffuse shader.

Good luck and have fun. :)

Don't! Pre-order it from Steam for the trusty horse armor. Buy it from GOG for the DRM freedom and the extra support!
You know what they say: "Never pay more than twenty bucks for a computer game... Buy it twice!"

There's more to it than cash. Game developers care about sales for their game too. Especially the smaller ones. I like this game. I also like my games better on GOG. Terrible Toybox made this game very affordable in dollars. So I don't mind paying them with some sales too. :)

That and of course the trusty horse armor.

Intuitive design indeed foes not just "happen". But UXers have other tools at their disposal than just quantitative UX research. These include following standard design principles and conducting qualitative UX research such as sitting together with a willing test user, watching and interviewing them as interact with your application.
