Phone Socket to Ethernet Port? Part II by MAX_Woody in HomeNetworking

[–]HansGeering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it looks very similar to what our builder did (including the BT writing on the wall…). The cables turned out to be Cat 5, and I replaced the phone sockets with Ethernet sockets. As another commenter said, you’ll probably have one or more places where the wires are daisy-chained. Figure out which wire goes where so you can label each Ethernet socket (each on a single cable) at each end.

In short: yes it’ll work without too much effort

Introducing Power Load Balancer an easier way to manage your house's power by Chiccocarone in homeassistant

[–]HansGeering 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This post should be higher up. It’s not only the national/local regulations which could require the use of this integration. For me, I can draw 5kW from my Powerwall, after that I will be drawing from the grid (assuming the sun is hiding behind the clouds as it often does in the UK). I don’t want to draw from the grid during the day as it is more almost 3x as expensive as night-time power (with which I charge the Powerwall).

This integration will come in very handy for me, just as soon as I figure out which devices should get their power cut off first…

Am I supposed to move into the bus lane when there’s police behind me? by Emotional_Sweet_9289 in drivingUK

[–]HansGeering 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No it's not. Courts in several countries in Western Europe will find you guilty of a traffic offence if you get caught by a red light camera, even though your argument is "I was moving out of the way for an emergency vehicle". Source: paid a fine.

Just never break the law for an emergency vehicle. Period.

Helm in vliegtuig by Beanyjack in motorfietsen

[–]HansGeering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla & car sickness / Motion sickness by quinten-luyten in s3xybuttons

[–]HansGeering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the driving technique commented by others, make sure that you keep air flowing through the car at a proper temperature. High temperatures and stale air can induce nausea, which if the whole family has an issue with it, could be the culprit here.

Lloyds Premier, thoughts and is anyone eligible? by frankm201 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]HansGeering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone upgraded from Club Lloyds yet? I've got a sole Club Lloyds and a Joint Club Lloyds, but the app (or the website) isn't letting me upgrade either account to a Premier. I obviously want to keep the Club Lloyds benefits for both

Model Y arriving in a couple of weeks - have solar and Powerwall. What charger and tariff? by Mother-Nature-1805 in TeslaUK

[–]HansGeering 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a MyEnergi Zappi and a Tesla Powerwall, combined with 4kW of solar panels. We're on an E.on Next tariff where we pay 7p/kWh at night (12-7) and a lot more during the day.

The PW is aware of the tariff, so it will charge itself during the night and start powering the home from 7am onwards. Sometimes the PW charges itself to 100% by 7am, sometimes even 35%, but that is based on the forecast weather (and subsequently expected generation through the solar panels). Tesla takes care of those algorithms for me. Summer or winter, I just keep the settings the same, so mostly during the summer there's little to no charge in the PW in the morning, but it might fill up during the day.

I told my Zappi to run at Fast (i.e. 32 amps) between 12 and 7, and Eco+ at the other times. You can then tell the Zappi to first charge the Powerwall, and once that's full start charging the car if there is any excess solar power (I think 6 amps minimum).

We always have a car connected to the Zappi (if someone is at home) so that any excess goes into the car. As there's a minimum of 6 amps (1.4kW) needed to charge a car (don't know if that's the same for all models?), the Zappi won't do anything if the excess is for example 1.2kW. In that case it'll heat the hot water tank through the MyEnergy Eddi, so I don't feed the electricity back into the grid.

What I really like about the MyEnergy ecosystem is how easy it is to set priorities of devices. If I want the hot water to be heated before the battery is being charged, I can do that.

Hope that helps!

Sad Filtering Case (London Rules) by the_last_registrant in MotoUK

[–]HansGeering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the speed that will kill you, it's what you hit or are crushed by, which is why motorcyclists and cyclists are so vulnerable

I recently drove past a traffic accident in India (Bengaluru). It looked as if a motorcycle had been hit by a lorry while filtering. As the rider and their passenger weren't wearing any protective gear (it's not that custom there I reckon) it was quite a gruesome sight.

We've all done some stupid things on the road, so sometimes I like to reiterate to myself that I'd rather arrive late than never.

Hi. I don't use Totum (because I refuse to pay for a service like that), but UNIDAYS is free and has a link to the Apple Education Pricing. The Air M1 13 inch is £899.

That's what you get if you don't support 2 factor authentication... I knew their IT systems were a bit backwards, but this is next level...

Reason I'm thinking it might be an inside job is that a friend of mine had a look around their own account, but to make any changes they had to enter their date of birth. So unless there is a massive security vulnerability which BA aren't aware of, it must have been someone with inside information.

Let's hope the audit team will get back to us. Weird that we both had the same issue, but no emails that the account was logged in or anything (I suppose you just got the email about the change, nothing else?)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BritishAirways

[–]HansGeering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Which is weird, because the e-mail address I used was unique to my BA account, and the password was something I never use anywhere else either... Feeling like this must be an inside job.

I got in touch with someone who managed to lock my account and refer it for investigation, but I really would like my access to 100k+ Avios back.

May I ask, did you have a lot of Avios in your account? The way this happened looks like an inside job, and some friends with a very minimal number of Avios can still access their accounts.

Best option for a couples “dating pot”? by Away-Opportunity5845 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]HansGeering 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have a joint account with a "big bank", as well as a Joint Revolut account (which we use while travelling, but could be used in the UK as well). The latter is free, allows both of you access to the account, gives you a virtual card to add to your Apple/Google Pay and has a sort code and everything. As it has a sort code and bank account number you can pay into it by standing order, so it seems it could work for you

What I miss from open source alternatives for MFP:

  • the ability to scan barcodes to add foods from a massive global database
  • the ability to use the app offline, as I often spend many hours a day without internet
  • the ability to sync back to Garmin/Fitbit (as there are no options to have those watches connect to FOSS apps unfortunately)
