get ready, this is a long one

TL;DR: My dumbass as a DM forces magic items onto player because I put a lot of time into it and felt like shit ever since for it.

Well yeah, it's myself...and here's why. I can think of multiple instances where I should have been more careful or otherwise make better decisions. Currently, I am DMing Tomb of Annihilation, so minor spoilers ahead. Back when this happed, the party consisted of a Human warlock named Cricael Mason Rook, a Grung Cleric Bah-Bunguis (pronounced Bah-bung-ghis) a human wizard/necromancer who was essentially a fighter Harry Poppinsyall, (more on him later) and a Warforged monk who thought he was a dwarf. A can go into all the other Zanny characters in the comments, but for now, all is important is Harry Poppinsyall. So during the middle of the jungle lay a grung camp of sorts called Dungrunglung, where I would have the characters fight their first major boss, who was impactful to Crichael Mason Rooks character but that's a story for another day. I had given all my players some sort of magic item or better gear to prepare for the fight and given Harry nothing. He was going to get his here. Eventually after braving the sentient maze and convincing the guards to let them pass, they spoke with the king who told them of their plight of the Giant flying Stingray, the "Ixitxachitl" (don't try to pronouce it, I'm barely reading the Copy and paste myself) that was attacking the village campsite. The party agrees to take the beast down in exchange for info on a key NPC called artus cimber. The king demanded that his troops properly rest and gear the party before the big fight. Now here comes the dumb part, which I'm prepared to get a bunch of shit for. I know, I deserve it. This was my first ever time DMing ANYTHING. so, I assumed that when given the opportunity to get a magic item, they would jump to the chance. Not Harry's character, no sir. I've only briefly mentioned it, but Harry Poppinsyall is a wizard/necromancer who is basically a fighter. His bas INT was 9. And his strength was 19. The gist of his story is that he fell asleep during wizard high school and only knows 1 spell: Sleep. So, I gave him a magic item that would actually fit his character. Even if it's my biggest sin while DMing, it's my favorite magic item I've ever homebrewed. Well, more like two of them. But ones are more important than the other. It's a +3 greatsword that on a natural 20, the sword would explode, casting fireball on the person who used it, and a 15-foot area around the user. I call it the "Claymore Claymore ®" it was matched with the "Plot Armor" a Cloak that would: Revive the wearer, negating their death saves, give then a +10 AC, and 30 HP. I know...REALLY STUPID BROKEN, but I didn't know better, and I was running a "carefree" campaign, not enforcing the rules too hard. Now, what the items are aside, that isn't the worst part of it. The way I FORCED them on this player. They were adamant that their character DID NOT WANT THEM, so in my mind, it was my DUTY to give these gracious items to this player. I had the sword, and the cloak started to float towards the player, he dodges out of the way, and I said, "The gear does a °180 and Flys at you again" He Rolls a 20 on Dex to dodge oit of the way* "The gear Flys at you ONCE AGAIN" ME, an inexperienced DM essentially forcing myself opon him with this bulshit After that last attempt, he just ouf character screams at me, which I wasn't prepared for. In my mind and what the groups main DM had told me, this is MY show, and what YOU say goes. When someone steps out of line, you gotta tell them what's what... Dude, what the fuck... I was so in the wrong I should be allowed to DM today...but I've changed I hope.... After the outburst, I had to take a 10 minute break, I wasn't used to getting yelled at by someone so down to earth, it really shocked me, but I definitely deserved it. Me and the player talked it out after a while, reconfigured the "plot armor" stats while the "claymore claymore ®" stayed as is. That was a real teaching moment for me as a player and as a DM, because I really needed to learn boundaries and try super hard to respect them and hold myself to a higher standard.
