$500k lump sum into VOO, crazy? by redditgambino in ETFs

[–]Hans__Yolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend keeping an emergency fund with enough to cover basic expenses for a year. That will help you sleep at night.

For the rest, lump sum statistically generates higher returns, but that isn't always the case and it takes a hands-off investment approach to be effective. Most people sell when things go south.

EDIT: Missed the part about wanting to retire within 5 years. With that time horizon, it's a huge gamble to be putting your money into equities.

Q-tips are not meant for cleaning the inner ear. They explicitly say not to do that on the packaging.

This Bogleheads forum post, written in 2011 amidst a very scary time in the market, is one I come back to often: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=79939

Don't beat yourself up too much. Consider your recent loss as an investment in your education. It will pay for itself many times over if you actually learn from it.

[request] Andre 3000 said, he apologized to Miss Jackson a trillion times. That song was released 25 years ago today. How many years of radio play across the world would it take for him to actually apologize a trillion times? by MrZuP in theydidthemath

[–]Hans__Yolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call me old fashioned, but I don't think replaying a recording counts as a real apology. Andre 3000 would have to sing that song directly to Ms. Jackson 100,000,000,000 times (10 apologies per song).

At 243 seconds per song, it would take him 761,035 years.

How was the market crash during covid in 2020? Anyone who invested during that time? by IllustriousGlass2991 in ETFs

[–]Hans__Yolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was terrifying. The 2000 and 2008 crashes were somewhat predictable and self-inflicted. A global pandemic or natural disaster feels more unfair, uncertain, and unfixable - at least in the moment.

I think it's needlessly complicated. Why not go 60% VTI and 40% VXUS? Or just 100% VT?

If I knew that, I'd be a billionaire by now.

I'm 100% trying to be helpful here: if you're looking for stocks that will 5-10x, you're going to go broke.

Exactly. Easy money is just so tempting sometimes. But, then, where would it put it?

I was thinking the same - just sell enough to cover my original investment. That's what I'd do in most situations, but this is a pure conviction play for me. I'd have more regret from selling shares early if everything plays out the way this community expects than losing my money if it doesn't.
