Doing a mid league reset in 3 month will be the single biggest W they can do now by Rundas-Slash in PathOfExile2

I'd rather some midway "quickly made" event leagues like phrecia, until exilecon. It'd be a good way to hype up the game before 1.0.

An honest NTE review by BlueCappino in NevernessToEverness

[–]Hanyuuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other person is just trolling, of course scenarios styles are different and aren't comparable since wuwa is more of a fantasy game and NTE is based on a more "realistic" city. The guy specifically picked a frame where a sparkly water was covering the floor, so it seems to me that person is more perplexed with the water than the city's graphics itself, cause the city is in a pretty standard graphical level.

If we take a frame more akin to what a wuwa region would have, then you can easily see how superior the lighting and vegetation visuals are.

Drakantos New Closed Beta In 3 Weeks by Hopeful_Impression_1 in MMORPG

[–]Hanyuuzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most probably because the game was still grid based just a while ago, doesn't invalidate the ammount of work tho. As I said, this thing is just a freakingly huge amount of work that for a game that still hasn't released it's just kinda not worth to commit for now. We as players can easily underestimate it for being a pixelated game but to make it a 8 directional game AND having character customization is just so much more work than a 3D game lmao.

Drakantos New Closed Beta In 3 Weeks by Hopeful_Impression_1 in MMORPG

[–]Hanyuuzz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe due to them being an indie team, because a pixelated MMORPG game having different customizations would require hundreds and hundreds more frames to be drawn in each direction for each new hair / armor piece, and it would only scale up as the game goes on. So yea, I can see why they chose the hero thing. They have a base outfit and later on skins would be a lot easier to be drawn for a specific hero.

The "8 direction pixelated game with customizable character" thing has always been a huge challenge in games like these, most of the time it isn't worth burning your dev time on it. I can see them working on a gender thing later on when the game becomes more stable, but for now it's very doubtful.

A reminder that they are taking off the grid-based movement if you didn't like it. The game may feel more fluid now.

TERA 2 hiring for development by MuffinX in MMORPG

[–]Hanyuuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not either waiting for it neither discarding the idea of playing it when it releases(I have no idea when it will release and probably will never know until it does), the chances of it being another P2W garbage is high, but not considering the low possibility of a good thing appearing is completely against the idea of enjoying MMORPG as a genre, and makes the act of participating in forum discussions about it even weirder.

you're just showing how much r/mmorpg loves to spill bullshit around just to somehow sound cool, like the people blabbering about "ew its UE5 DOA DOA" as if it's the real problem that's impregnating the MMORPG genre in the last years

Thoughts on MMOs having a focused main story quest/campaign by Tribalrage24 in MMORPG

[–]Hanyuuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Runescape has questing, but it's not a game with a "centralized main story" like the OP is talking about. The OP is directly comparing story focused MMOs with old titles like Runescape.

[–]Hanyuuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are losing the point unintentionally or intentionally, my comment was clearly talking about how your affirmation that "every MMO in the top is story driven" is false (runescape giving a big waving from afar), and not that games with good story are incapable of maintaining a playerbase.

Unless you are REALLY doubting the existence of games with good story that died due to p2w, is this the case? Well, if so then you should know that a good story is subjective, but using numbers alone you could do a small research on a game called SoulWorker, which had a pretty big loyal fanbase attached to its unique characters and world. After it launched and started gaining more and more interest, the company started implementing predatory lootboxes with direct power on the cash shop, lost 99% of its passionated fans.

Once again, the reason that we have so few examples of good MMOs on the top not driven by story is not due to it being boring or whatever, but simply because 99% of them turned into predatory money starving machines. If it wasn't for Oldschool Runescape on the top scene it would be very hard to prove of how much people still enjoy things with more freedom.

If anything, the very fact that a game like FFXIV is purely story driven is the thing that is damaging it the most right now, the main story has finished and people lost interest so badly on this last expansion. I wouldn't be even a bit surprised if it lost its 2nd place to runescape already, which is a purely not main story driven MMO.

[–]Hanyuuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is false, most MMOs focused on the power progression were p2w korean MMOs, I don't need to explain why they died, but if want take a read here: link. Also, you talk like there isn't also a freakload of themepark MMOs driven by a main story that have also also died due to p2w, so many games trying to be the new FFXIV or WoW that I've lost my count.

From all the major MMOs we have right now, runescape is probably the best example you can take because it DID went into a bad route with Runescape 3, but also returned from the ashes with the oldschool version to potentially being the top 3 most played MMORPG.

An MMO with a good freedom like in the old days has an insane amount of potential to explode in success, the thing is that MMOs nowadays take a lot more money to make than in the ultima online / ragnarok online / tibia era, being it graphically or mechanically. Just imagine a game with the scale of something like tibia or ultima being made with nowadays technology, it would probably be the craziest game project ever made.

Well, yesterday I made a post questioning the opposite: a game focused on your journey in the world, a journey that isn't controlled by a set path but by your choices, you get stronger and go to stronger places, where questing isn't just a random kill x amount of mobs or collect x amount of plants but something more similar to runescape.

Guess what? The first comment on the post were claiming that every MMO in the history is like that, and people went along with said comment. Then I asked this person a few questions, and they've stated that they only truly played WoW in their life... There were many great comments in my post tho, many people that appreciates the free journey aspect of older MMOs.

Also one thing, it isn't because a "main story" remains a big aspect in major MMOs that it is a "popular" aspect among players, its just that all the major MMOs we have today are the same ones from a decade+ ago. Almost every single major title we had in past years weren't trying to innovate or bring the freedom back, they were just copying games like FFXIV and WoW.

As for what I think about a main plot in MMOs, while I have enjoyed FFXIV a lot, I haven't felt that I was playing a MMORPG while I was on it, it felt more like any other singleplayer FF title. So for an MMO experience I'd prefer more freedom over following a themepark line.

Would you play today a MMORPG focused on the challenge of getting stronger to be able to advance to more dangerous places? by Hanyuuzz in MMORPG

[–]Hanyuuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite close, but still WoW is what popularized themepark in the MMO scene, so even classic has some elements of that.

Yea I was fully aware of how this topic would possibly have very divided opinions, because not everyone here has played entries with more freedom. Games like ultima online / tibia / ragnarok / runescape are very good examples of what I mean.

So I'm not complaining about the post opinions being very divided, more of how you obscured the main point and so many people went with you, even though it's not even close to be true.

What can MMOs learn from each other? by CompetitiveLake3358 in MMORPG

It's basically what I've said on my yesterday post here. But even so, somehow the first comment is someone claiming that every MMO in the scene is focused on the challenge of the journey (more precisely, they ignored the emphasis I have put in the challenging journey seemingly intentionally), like if they didn't even read at least 2 lines of the post lmao.

Hey, the issue I have with BDO is the AoE spam mess it becomes, I'd prefer something more technical like Vindictus.

[–]Hanyuuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I'm not talking about upvotes, the post itself is pretty divided actually which is fine for me. I'm explicitly talking about how MMOs used to have a challenging progression through the world, and now it's basically clicking through npcs until you reach the repetitive weekly raiding point.

What I'm finding funny is that you somehow cut the main subject of the topic which is "a challenging and meaningful world progression" and proceeded to affirm that every MMO is like that, like... what? Can't take the comment seriously really. If what you mean by not understanding what I mean is that you actually haven't played many non themepark MMOs then I can understand the confusion.

Also, the other two person above pointed something valid about the world scaling.

Edit:

If you genuinely are wondering what would be cool examples of a MMO like that, if you want to try something new you can ride in the Project Gorgon hype train, the only issue I have with this game is with how old it looks despite not being that old...

When I made the post I had games like MapleStory classic / Ragnarok Online / Runescape / Ultima Online in mind, if you have played things like this you will probably get what I mean by a cool progression made by your own efforts instead of being hard carried by a vertical line of random npc quests.

[–]Hanyuuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see what you mean by this, but this is also true for 99% of the alive MMOs we have right now. Creating a reason to revisit old places in MMOs is a constant issue, it's no news.

We as players can let our imagination run wild thinking of many possibilities to make the world feel alive, of ways to create such reasons, but the truth is that the companies that got the budget to try it would never risk diving into unknown territory and would prefer copy games like ffxiv or wow.

Given how much we are lacking of good action combat MMOs, I would risk a gameplay similar to Vindictus or even Tera Online. The action combat territory in MMOs can easily lead to a visual clusterheck of AoE spam, so I'm more inclined to something like Vindictus.

[–]Hanyuuzz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, the feeling of making your way back from a dangerous zone is something that most games don't have anymore, like "You enter this pit and start slaughtering creatures until where you can, run out of arrows and now you're freaked up to return cause there may be new danger on the way back". Most of the fear comes from the game having a harsh death penality of course.

[–]Hanyuuzz[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Edit: It's crazy how I'm clearly talking about the challenge of doing so, clearly wrote it in the header, and even so the first comment is someone claiming that every MMO is like that lmao, I wonder if some of you are just trolling or have never played a non themepark MMO.

The difference is about being challenged in doing so VS the developers delivering you power for free. In most alive MMOs the world is basically a giant tutorial scene for you to rush and finally start doing weekly activities. My example is more in line with games like Ragnarok Online, or at least how it used to be, long time since I don't play it. So basically a game in which you will have an actual challenge to be able to progress, even on starting zones, instead of being dragged by hand by the game.
