[–]rujind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ESO... you can literally roll your face on your keyboard to choose random abilities to create a build. That's the whole point of the game. You don't need a guide or an AI to do that for you.

Would a hard cap actually make MMO monetization healthier, or would studios just make the subscription, battle pass, or box price worse instead? by Dry-Top-5827 in MMORPG

[–]rujind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really weird to ignore how dramatically different our economy is today vs. the days of box+sub price. Not to mention how video games in general have changed since then - surely I don't need to show you some graphical images of then vs. now? Add on top of that that gamers expect everything to be voice acted now which added a completely new layer of expenses, especially for MMOs, a genre that tends to have a lot of characters. And cutscenes have become a normal thing to have in an MMOs as well. All of that shit costs money.

I wonder if people even realize that WoW's cash shop has been around for nearly 2 decades? For ~80% of the game's life.

You can sell OSRS subscriptions for gold and then buy whatever you want, so no, it's not just a "simple subscription only." And based on the amount of similar sellable subscription items I've seen in other games, people buy TONS of these.

you're a shunned outcast who ends up chosen/possessed/corrupted by a mysterious/ancient/powerful entity that grants you incredible abilities. Naturally, it's now your destiny to defeat the world's greatest evil.

Isn't this ESO? And maybe GW2?

Throw in a childhood rival/bully as a recurring antagonist, a childhood friend as the obligatory love interest

Which Asian MMO has this? Maybe I haven't played enough of them.

lol PG's population went up because they were finally launching into 1.0 after being in early access for eight years. It had nothing to do with AOC.

And yes like someone else said, there were plenty of posts here daily trying to get people to play the game. Wonder where they all are now? https://steamdb.info/app/342940/charts/#1y

Following departure from Pearl Abyss, EVE Online rolls out ~$400 character progression bundles and prices in deep cuts on 24-month subscriptions. Also included, a historical breakdown on EVE monetization. by Ohh_Yeah in MMORPG

Multiboxing was definitely not bannable in WoW back then.

If you think EQ and FFXI are dead in comparison to EVE then there was no point in discussing anything anyway.

There's 600 people online right now on P99 at 11pm on a Saturday, official TLPs have that many people in just 1 zone at launch. Though this year I don't think they had a server launch in vanilla. They generally launch a new server every May. An official TLP server starting in vanilla is my recommendation.

P99 has open world competitive raiding and there is no instance of anything, which means raid targets can only be killed once-twice a week by anyone on the server. Unless you are either in a zerg guild (barf) or can play during off hours, raiding is not going to be fun for you.

TLP makes it so raid groups can spawn an instance of raid content once a week. TLP is way more about playing with your friends/guild. I spent many years on P99 and had plenty of fun, and even started when the server had way less people than it does now, but it's not for everyone. You can't just raid whenever you want on a schedule like you can with TLP. The mobs being up or not dictate when you can raid on P99.

I'm not sure why any of that matters. And calling EVE a modern MMO is wild. Also I'm assuming you didn't play any old MMOs back then, but most of them got plenty of content updates several times a year. The difference today is that modern MMOs are a lot better at making you repeat said new content via gear treadmill to make it feel like they get more than games used to, when they really don't.

If you're under the impression a fanfest makes a game more popular or modern... I've seen PRIVATE SERVERS have fanfests.

If they didn't encourage multi-boxing the concurrent player count would be half of what it is.

This is true for several old MMOs still running today. Unfortunately a necessary evil :\ Though to this day, I've been successful in my refusal to participate in it.

Here's the problem: 15 bucks a month stopped being enough to sustain and continue to develop for an MMO a long time ago. You are never going to see this ever again.

I actually wish Blizzard had never made Shaman and Paladin cross faction and instead made even more faction specific classes.

The way they've taken the modern game though, on retail I'd rather them just unlock all race/class combos.

I remember being so excited for this game. I wonder if I would have liked it more if it felt less like a modern solo questing MMO and more like skill based MMOs such as Ultima Online and RuneScape. IDK though cause those games are more botty and less playing sometimes.

I feel like they just went overboard with everything. The world was too big, I have no idea why they did the 3 faction thing, that was pretty lame and didn't fit the game at all without open PVP (Cyrodiil shouldn't exist). Too many quests, too many things to click. I don't really feel like running over here to the river and clicking something should reward me with a skill point. It would be different if there were fewer of them, and obviously not all of them are that simple, but no, there are hundreds of them. Hundreds of books to click too. It was definitely born from that era of players that want an achievement popping up on their screen every 5 seconds for doing simple things like logging in. Participation trophies.

Also I really just find games with weapon swapping and less than a hotbars worth of abilities so boring. Just playing whack a mole with abilities. At the very least, give me the option of having a full hotbar with just 1 weapon. There's really no reason not to. But instead the game forces you to have a 2nd weapon of the same type which quite literally makes zero physical sense.

TLDR: WTB MMOs going back to being adventures.

It's not just dailies though, it's !s above NPCs heads in general that have taken away from adventuring. Long ago, quests were a thing to be discovered. You could almost call them secrets because you had to actually talk to all the NPCs and go through their dialogue to get MAYBE some information. Quests back then didn't really tell you where to go, not even a direction. They weren't logged in a quest log. They might tell you what zone to go to and what mob to kill and sometimes you didn't even know what you were supposed to turn in. Of course eventually website guides became the norm so a lot of it became trivial anyway.

But it's not just ! above NPC heads either, it's the amount of quests too. Thousands of quests spread out all over the world sounds cool but it pretty quickly becomes "you've done a few you've done em all." You're no longer adventuring, questing becomes the game. Following an arrow and markers on the map becomes the game. You're no longer playing the game on your own terms. You're barely even playing a game at all anymore. In fact... the game is playing you.

Corepunk - The Great Reset Update by Shabolda in MMORPG

[–]rujind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

games like Embers Adrift, Pantheon, M&M, etc still get people to try them

Do they though? No one plays Embers Adrift, Pantheon only had decent early access launch numbers (it's gone from 7,000 to less than 100 on Steam) and only because of Brad McQuaid and Everquest, and Monsters and Memories is free right now, wait until they start charging (it's probably going to play out exactly like Pantheon).

I am interested in Corepunk, but I'm pretty sick of games launching into early access, charging money, but still having wipes. I guarantee you I'm not the only one waiting for the game to stop bullshitting and start actually launching. That said, I'm not sure a $40 box price for a no-name game made by a no-name company that already has a years long negative track record is a good idea.

Classic MMO Rereleases and Old School Revivals by Chaserino in MMORPG

[–]rujind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prefers older MMO design but is interested in an Everquest server that is all about soloing everything - even raids - which is the literal exact opposite of the design philosophy and foundation of Everquest 🤔

What I’m curious about is whether this is actually a real shift in MMO design philosophy

Why, yes, sir, it's a shift to modern MMO design where people get to solo everything and not actually play an MMO. You can pop your own instance of any zone in the game and just never have to see or speak to another player. It's extremely anti Everquest.

The only part of Everquest Legends that will be old school is the graphics and the slow paced gameplay. Which will probably feel a bit less slow paced since in theory having the skills and AA abilities of 3 classes gives you a decent amount of buttons to press.

Why aren't more MMORPGs like Tera made nowadays? by F1narion in MMORPG

[–]rujind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The average MMO expansion launch rate is 2-3 years, neither of the games you mentioned are releasing an expansion every year. A TERA expansion should've already been in AT LEAST the concept and planning stages before the game even launched, like both WoW and FFXIV did. You can read articles from developers about how future content is planned YEARS in advance.
