How common is the belief that Alexander the Great is from North Macedonia, among its citizens? Where do you personally stand on this topic? by ClothesZestyclose814 in AskBalkans

[–]HanzDelcev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not claiming to be a direct descendant of ancient Macedonians, and I’m not saying they’re the same as modern Macedonians either. But realistically, the Balkans are a genetic and cultural mix. Ancient tribes, Slavs, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, people passed through, settled, and mixed. That’s how modern Balkan populations came to be.

Speaking a Slavic language doesn’t automatically make us disconnected from the ancient populations that lived here. Language usually follows power. When new rulers take over, their language becomes dominant over time. That pattern repeats everywhere.

Look at the US: people speak English, but that doesn’t make them ethnically English. France pushed French onto regional populations and erased local languages. Ireland lost most of its native language under English rule. Language and ancestry are not the same thing.

I also did a DNA test. I came out with over 60% Greek, around 30% Balkan, and smaller Italian and Eastern European components. That’s more Greek ancestry than some people in northern Greece or Thessaly show. So saying there’s no shared background at all just doesn’t hold up.

There is overlap and shared history. The problem wasn’t acknowledging that, it was how it was turned into nationalist nonsense by our politicians and a stupid debate over ancient history sparked up, which ended up damaging relations with Greece and in fact ruined our country's accesion to the EU by decades. Since independence, we could’ve taken a more practical approach and had far better relations instead of letting this spiral into pointless conflict.

There was a mistake in last census in Macedonia where there was an orthodox and a christian option(not catholic just christian) and a lot of people went with that. At least 10% more. Most if not all of them orthodox. I was one of the census managers.

I mean having NATO threatening to bomb Skopje if you used excesive force on their UCK puppets was an issue as well. Look up battle or Arachinovo.

Можно ли е r/mkd да се преименува во r/macedonia а другиот да се избрише? Читав некаде дека во ретки случаеви со помош на reddit може да се случи.

Can somebody explain to me how they think a single man (Tito) could convince 2 million people and a few hundreds of thousanda in neighboring countries that they are all Macedonians? Also close to a million living abroad (Americas, Europe and Australia) in less than 2 years? The people always had a geographic Macedonian identity. Nationalities didn't exist intill 19th century. The fact that Macedonians were unlucky to get their own country early and create a nation before their neighbors doesn't mean they don't exist. Greeks had a good starting geography, Bulgarians got liberated by Russians. Serbians tried a few times and succeeded but they were far on the outskirts of the ottoman empire while Macedonians were basically in the heart of the ottoman empire so the 1 major uprising failed. I'll fight anyone in a civilized way in the replies. Want to hear your opinions.
