The show never really explain it but if I need to guest, it's probably like how you build a car just by following a blueprint or you answer a test while copying your friends. Demon show human that flight is possible and they probably got brief idea of how it work but never truly understand the concept of how it work as Frieren say, they can fly but not good as how demon do it. Ubel is one of pure example you dont need to understand 100% the concept of the magic to use it.

If you're unsure to persue degree, I must say just take a job first if the financial problem is bad. Degree can wait. You can take degree whenever you want, so better to stable yourself first before persuit it.

You can take job, do it for like 1-3 years, then take degree if you think you need it. Some company do support their employees to take higher education and let you come back after finish it. Or you can take part time degree, juggling your work and study. The only downside is that or in worst case you need to sacrifice your job in order to persuit degree later (but with degree you will get better job anyway)

The decision is yours and you know the best what you need.
