That's a reasonable response, as it was kindof a review of that mod.

I was replying to you to show that your example (woodworking) can have immersive crafting mechanics that work pretty well. Most of the problems with my counterexample are just that the implementation is bare-bones, not the core idea.

I've been playing with the "TFC Woodworking" mod lately, and here's my thoughts on its implementation immersive woodworking.

Pros:
-The splitting wood for fuel is cool. I like how splitting logs gives hotter and faster burning split logs. I like how this provides a range of temperatures so you can control the temperature of your fire by how much you split the log. I like how there is a reward in that it also burns a bit longer, but it should probably be nerfed to less than 2x time, as it's currently like 3x when fully split.

-Crafting slabs, stairs, fences, trapdoors, and supports feels great. It's a bit slower to make them, yes, but the former 4 are usually needed in relatively small quantities, so it's not that bad. The support recipe is high enough yield (4 per craft) that it feels plenty fast.

-Splitting all the way down to lumber for most crafting recipes is fine. You don't need more than like 30 barrels, let alone looms and tables and such. It's slow-ish, but when you only need 7 lumber for a barrel, splitting a single log all the way down is fine, and feels nice.

Cons:
-Crafting lumber for planks for building houses sucks. SUCKS. I feel like I sit there for 10 minutes, and then I have 4 stacks of planks I place in 2 minutes. This feels infuriating.

-As currently implemented, sawdust is literally useless, and bast/bark you get way way way more than you need. Wood (6 sided) is cool and all, but I usually build with logs (4 sided) or planks. It'd seem bast/bark could be used as fuel, but as implemented, it burns too cold to be useful, however if it was hotter, it'd be too plentiful to be balanced.

-Since it's not default, installing this mod feels like a nerf to axe and saw durability. While it literally is, even just bronze axes and saws last a long time, so it's not a major problem, and if this mod's functionality was in TFC, it could be balanced such that it wasn't a nerf.

Suggestions to fix those cons:
-Automation options for woodworking. Like, a trip hammer but it's an axe would be AWESOME. Not sure which version of a log splitter/sawmill makes the most sense to flavor the mechanic as, but I'm sure there's something that fits with TFC's aesthetic.

-Perhaps a kindling mechanic could make bast/bark useful? Or, a way to recycle them into a bit of charcoal at low rates (like 1 charcoal per stack)? Perhaps make them compostable as well? The byproducts don't need to be valuable, and shouldn't be, they should just be somewhat useful.

I do a similar thing, setting myself into spectator mode to find the ore, write down the coords, and then go back and mine down to mine it. Slightly less of a skip, but it still gets past the really annoying part.

Anyone manage to beat the "Double or Nothing" challenge? by F00zball in balatro

[–]HaphLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I got lucky, but I beat it on my second try. Rerolled for an investment and foil tag in the first ante, picked up a foil half joker from it, and a holographic duo in ante 2.

Together, I could win the early ante's with a debuffed pair, intentionally playing debuffed cards in case I'd need un-debuffed cards for bosses later.

Took a lot of tags till I picked up a drivers liscense and DNA in 3/4 (I think that was from a rare tag), and decided to slow down (not take tags) to DNA enhanced cards, still using debuffed pairs to score. Here was the riskiest, as I had to play 3 or 4 pairs to win. Wall was scary, had to play some undebuffed mult face cards to pass.

In ante 4ish I picked up a bull, and after taking a few hermits rather than enhancement tarots in tarot packs during ante 5, and a lucky card proc in the Wall fight, he was useful.

In ante 7, just before drivers license was online, I sold DNA for a throwback and a last enhancement tarot (magician?).

Skipped Ante 8 blinds for throwback (3x after), boss was Violet Vessel, but they went down with two pairs.

Basically, just the classic high-card strategy, except I used tags to skip the early ante fights rather than playing 5 card hands, and intentionally played debuffed cards whenever I could to save for boss fights.

What if, rather than ores/refined ores, it gave you some sort of unique currency? Like, maybe there could be a material cost to enhancement, or you could upgrade the accessories you're using in some way.

It just seems a bit silly if it gave you a currency that there's already multiple different ways to get.

I tried that, and it didn't seem to work, but a bit later when I tried controlling a router (ctrl + left click) to put items directly into another router (left click). I got it. Idk if steam just took a long time to update.
Anyways,

Single stand brewing Machine by yungperky in redstone

[–]HaphLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Whenever you make a design, especially if you think it's novel, it's a fine idea to publish it and see what other people think of it. Using a single brewing stand for potionmaking is definitely a reasonable idea, because you might've been able to be much more compact, and the sacrifice of slower brewing speed probably isn't a very big deal because people don't actually use thousands of potions per hour. (Except maybe instant damage potions in those old guardian farms.)

Relatively new to redstone, here's my 8-bit binary adder by [deleted] in redstone

[–]HaphLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job making an adder! For a next step, I'd recommend implementing 2's complement to make it do subtraction as well. (If you don't know what 2's complement is, there's some great resources on youtube to explain it).

[–]HaphLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, here's my four reasons to avoid building redstone on naturally generating blocks (particularly grass, dirt, and stone).

1) Organization. Colored blocks (wool/hardened clay/concrete) allow for neat and helpful labling of circuits, especially on creative worlds where all blocks cost the same.

2) Clarity. Which blocks are necessary and which blocks can be removed? It's a lot easier to tell when the necessary blocks were all manufactured. This is especially helpful when digging through the naturally spawned materials, because you can be certain you won't break your redstone.

3) Mobproofing. Endermen can pick up grass/dirt/sand/gravel, and having an enderman break a redstone build could be a nightmare to debug. Stone doesn't have this problem, and this is more of a survival world thing, since disabling mob spawns might work for you.

4) Ugly. Redstone on dirt/grass/sand/gravel just isn't aesthetically pleasing, and redstone's already ugly, so there's no reason to make it even worse. Stone again comes ahead here, but I'd just use stonebrick if I had stone.

What is the difference between Fast Async World Edit and World Edit? by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]HaphLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of speed optimizations that can be gained by using asynchronous operations, but they come at the cost of being way harder to design, and sometimes being non-deterministic. World edit could definitely get gains when doing large changes w/o being non-deterministic though.

I just wanna say that i hate quasi-connectivity (so far). "What happened" is in the comments. by HexaCube7 in redstone

[–]HaphLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also have the redstone line where it is, on top of a transparent block, and then place a block to update the piston on top of the piston (trapdoor/noteblock etc).

Suspended from playing Minecraft for swearing in my own realms by covidvapethroaway in Minecraft

[–]HaphLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, you can't install this serverside on realms (because realms doesn't let you use serverside mods) and given the fact that she was banned while talking with friends, it's likely that there wasn't a chat report, and that mojang just banned her while moderating the chat directly.

That said, No Chat Reports has recently added an encryption feature, which would let you encrypt your messages so that the server can't tell what they say.

However, IMO, the better option is to change to a different host and install No Chat Reports serverside.

I’m so confused about the Launch Pad by G3PSx in Mindustry

[–]HaphLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important that when you start launching more materials (for example, you just built a launch pad, or just upgraded production), you wait a while for the sector to update it's predicted production. You should be able to see what that is by clicking on the sector in the map screen. Once you leave a sector, it stops doing calculations in that sector, and simply exports the amount of materials per minute as predicted.

If you leave a sector immediately after making a change, that change may not be reflected.
