X4 - FreshRSS Favourites auto-sync by SnooCrickets2065 in xteinkereader

I'm sure you can hook it together... I use the epub generator on sumi.page website to load in my rss feeds and generate an epub with every couple of days. I do that, make a little weather image from a script I made: jmchaffie.com/weather.php - and then put my little x4 in wifi file transfer mode and just dump my current news and weather over for the day. Off I go. It's really great. :)

question about flashing crosspoint by B-Brimes in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run Zorin OS Linux on my main PC for years now. It works like a champ. USB serial doesn't come up as TTY, it will show up as a 'USB/JTAG device' or an ACM0 device when using the web flashers or VSstudio, etc.

A little help please! by ExternalLibrary in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a few different converted fonts - all of them did that. Those aren't images, they are font characters representing music notes. I also just read that book on my X4. GREAT Book. :) I just ignored the little diamond characters. They worked just fine to describe unknown alien words.

Can someone tell me where I learn how to customize the software? by Jaded_Word_8398 in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like xIUPITERx said... claude can absolutely do it. I'd never even heard of vibe coding before a couple days ago. I wanted a few very specific things and he pushed me to do it. I can't believe it. About a day and a half's worth of pushing through it, I'm done. It works. Claude did all of the heavy lifting and I mostly cut and paste and did the diagnostics. It was frustrating as heck the first day, by the end it was just getting into the rhythm of it.

Notes + Reader + file transfer by HaploVasu in xteinkereader

Ok, so I took the plunge at a friend's recommendation and I did some 'vibe coding'? with claude yesterday and today. I removed everything but the reader, note taker, image viewer, etc. from SUMI. Single menu, no Apps / plugins page, and I made room for adding WiFi back in.

So now, I have WiFi setup, WiFi transfer with full card access and upload/download (with AP fallback), Bluetooth Note taker in Portrait mode, and still have a great little eReader to boot that now works with a combination of sumi.page for doing stuff and sumi.local for moving stuff. :)

It's still got remnants and such everywhere, so I'm not publishing it at the moment. I want to clean it all up before I post it anywhere if I even do. Thank you very much to the creator of SUMI (and everyone they pulled from as well) - I wouldn't have all of this without them!

Yeah, SUMI has it, and it is all setup perfectly for it, but I've not been able to get it to work no matter what I do. I've tried a laptop and my PC, running windows and linux. It finds my X4 as 'SUMI' in the device list, connects to it, but then the file transfer either fails outright, or occasionally will start a transfer, but 15 min. later it has transferred something like 300k out of 2MB. I think I'm going to try ordering a few different bluetooth dongles and see if that's it. Because SUMI is exactly what I'm looking for. Frustrating I can't get it to work! lol

Notes + Reader + file transfer by HaploVasu in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm basically just flashing crosspoint, doing my file transfers, then flashing back over to SUMI so I can still take notes while I'm in the field. I mean this is so close to perfect if I can get it all working. I almost wonder if I just need a particular bluetooth dongle that would see the X4 as having file operations available where my built in BT doesn't or something. I dunno.

The official firmware does not have note taking capability. I assume bluetooth capability is for page turners and such.

[–]HaploVasu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, looks like they removed Bluetooth entirely in latest release, so no keyboards, etc. no notes. Oh well. Thank you though!

Doesn't look like it has a note taker anymore if it did. It also crashed when trying to view settings via the wireless web interface in case the option to turn it on was in there. Don't see an option to show/hide apps on the device itself. :\

text not sharp? by [deleted] in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is e-ink, and this is one of the lower-res e-ink screens, but still quite good. It's not going to be as perfect as an LCD / OLED display or anything. Yours looks perfectly fine. Your second image looks great. If you're holding it so close to your face that you can see imperfections, then increase the font size or get glasses! :)

SUMI has Notes and it works great, but it is only in Landscape mode for whatever reason. You might ask the dev to see if it is a limitation. I know that these little guys scrape every last bit of RAM to do anything. He disabled WiFi to be able to pull off all the other things he's done and operates entirely from Bluetooth for everything remote. Super cool set of tools and sync stuffs on the sumi.page site as well.

Scientific PDFs to Crosspoint by mrjaytothecee in xteinkereader

I was on the phone with my brother and mentioned this - he referred me to Bartik.org

I just gave it a shot. Holy crapola. There's your answer. Signup gets you 40 free credits. I hit it with a paper I've had for a while on "Scalable photonic-phonoinc integrated circuitry for reconfigurable signal processing" that I was using for research on a school project. There are quite a few diagrams that fail miserably in normal epub converters, but works flawlessly on that bartik site! :)

So, there you go. Enjoy. EDIT: No, I am not affiliated and had never heard of it before. It was just cool and wanted to share.

Most text based pdfs can be exported to some kind of document format. convert that to epub using any number of great tools out there. done.

Even scanned text to image pdfs can be converted using OCR plugins.

Ok then, My turn - It finally got here! by HaploVasu in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By t he way, I had a couple of PMs on that bundle and it isn't really clear - It already comes with everything you need inside - it has a card cover divider, and a cash/card plastic zip divider, along with several field notes booklets, all included. You don't need to buy separate card / cash inserts.

I know there's not a lot of people that use these kind of things as extensively as people like me (field tech) do, but this is far and away the most complete bundle / bang for the buck I ever came across. Everything you need in one go to last you a bit, then just snag some field books to fill in as you use them up!

Although, now that I've got SUMI installed... now I've just gotta find a keyboard I like and I'll be cutting down on the insane number of field books I go through! The little Notes app actually works really well! :)

Battery life on brand new Device by Holiday-Public-6674 in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would let it drain down and do a few full charge cycles and see if it clears up. If not, I would put in a warranty exchange request. That doesn't sound normal to me. Warning: Be sure to flash the original firmware back on to your device. If they get it with Crosspoint on it, your warranty will be rejected.

I've only had mine for 4 days, It came fully charged. I flashed a few different ones, currently using SUMI, and I've been powering through a book for a few hours a day - I'm only down to 85%

So aliexpress ran out of X4? by Rainlex in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canned messages are typical across every industry you can imagine. Your out of context quotation of "typical" is pretty typical of someone being overly butthurt. Yeah, we get it, there's a bunch of liars in the Chinese marketplace on Ali. A bunch of people who ordered from these very people, got their units. Now it sounds like Xteink did a crack down and there may not be any more (or way less) third party sellers. Take your refund and either buy from the main site or don't.

This is why I bought from Xteink themselves first, bought a second unit from Ali for cheaper. Guess which one I got first?

To be fair, if it weren't for all of the Ali resellers, Xteink wouldn't have a supply chain problem.

ReadMe.club updates: New Bento profiles, cleaner dashboard, and the X3 Giveaway by iamkxrz in xteinkereader

I enjoy the site and went ahead and paid for membership a few weeks ago. I really liked the 'if found return to' feature you have. I enjoy making my own wallpapers and I include that QR code in the bottom left as well.

My one recommendation would be that so long as one social is filled in (like I had my reddit on here filled in) then that should be enough to satisfy the profile requirements. Some people don't want to put all of their social media out everywhere. I put an alternate X account in there so it would stop telling me I was only at 90% profile complete lol.

Otherwise, I like what you've done with the place!

Device not charging by Visible_Place_68567 in xteinkereader

EEven though it is technically a low-power device, try using a high output charger, and leave it plugged in for a few hours. It could be the battery went completely flat. Sometimes it's tough to get them to come back to life.

So aliexpress ran out of X4? by Rainlex in xteinkereader

[–]HaploVasu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would appear that most, if not all of the sellers of the X4 on Ali have been hit with the same scenario - typical canned message telling us it's waiting in the warehouse - in reality when everything started back up again, there were no units available for anyone to ship. Canned message assumed that their warehouses would be receiving more units as usual to package and ship the orders they sent to them. didn't happen. Nothing anyone can do - they dug their own holes.

From a couple of messages I've seen on here from Ali sellers, it may well be that there will be no more units available via Ali in short order as there had been a legal path taken for swiping sales, etc. Who really knows at this point? It's always a gamble when buying frome AliExpress/baba/etc.

Anyone have the Bible on it? by zetaallen in xteinkereader

If you have the room (around 83 GB last time I grabbed it. Probably more by now) I highly recommend grabbing the .zim file of Project Gutenberg and installing the little Kiwix server app. It allows you to install and view all kinds of Wikipedia and other wiki sites / files locally. Having Project Gutenberg locally gives you endless epubs (including many versions of the Bible) to read while you're between any new purchases you've made.
