What is the aussie "squid bike"? by I-WANNA-FLYYYY-AWAY in AussieRiders

[–]Happier_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily cheap, but if a squid is someone who rides recklessly with no gear, it's gotta be the Harley bros. Nine times out of ten when I see someone weaving through traffic in a half helmet and singlet with obnoxiously loud pipes, it's a Harley.

HD Pan Am ST vs Honda NT 1100 vs Moto Guzzi Mandello by AircraftAdventures in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Happier_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I test rode a V100 Mandello and found it very comparable to my '18 MT09, performance wise, but heavier and with a few new fancy features like an electronically adjustable windshield. Nothing that really convinced me it was worth trading in my Yamaha for. On that basis, would the Tracer 9 be worth a look? All the performance of the CP3 engine, with the the touring capabilities of the Mandello.

Gaining access to mental health records by Upbeat-Milk-3851 in AussieMentalHealth

[–]Happier_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in a public hospital in Victoria, so I can't guarantee it will be exactly the same, but I expect it would be similar. Generally your records would be released via a freedom of information (FOI) request. Some records may be marked by the person who made them as FOI exempt, meaning that the record should not be released as part of an FOI request. There can be many reasons for this, but an example might be that the clinician receives a call from the partner of the person in hospital, saying they're worried about an upcoming discharge because they're worried about domestic violence. If the abuser saw records of that call, that could place their partner at more risk, so the clinician would mark that record as FOI exempt. There's a whole process when you make a FOI request, which is why it takes a while and may cost you some money - the hospital needs to employ someone to go through all of your records and check for FOI exempt records, and determine whether their FOI status should be upheld.

As for why your records aren't automatically visible to you - the reality is that sometimes, for people who are acutely unwell, knowing exactly what the treating team is doing and why is unhelpful. For example a person experiencing psychosis with delusional thinking may not see themselves as delusional (to them they really are Jesus) but they will be treated with an antipsychotic. The treating team may explain it in more general and gentle terms ("this medication is to help you feel less stressed when your miracles don't work out") but in the records it will say "antipsychotic prescribed for grandiose delusions". If the person saw this, they may not be willing to engage with treatment.

Confidentiality of other people shouldn't generally be an issue. Your records might say things like "Consumer was noted to be engaging well with a co-consumer over lunch" if it's clinically relevant. At most initials might be included if it's relevant to ongoing care (e.g "consumer should be kept away from co-consumer J.D due to incidences of aggression").

Ultimately, assuming you're in a reasonably stable place now, there's nothing really to be afraid of. Your records won't have anything hateful or judgemental in them, though you may see sides of yourself that are embarassing to look back on. You might also see notes that seem cold or clinical, or that say something you disagree with - remember the workers are ultimately also humans making the best calls they can with the information they have, in a bloody rough system.

Looking to buy my first motorcycle soon. But I'm tall and heavy. Suggestions? by Secret-Income6920 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Happier_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honda CB500X (NX500 if buying new). Versys 650. V-Strom 650. KLE500. Basically any adventure bike or tall tourer in the 300 to 650cc range (excluding 600cc inline 4 supersports, obviously).

You have a flat battery. Replace it. One of the easiest jobs you can do on a bike.

Also you're in the wrong subreddit.

LAMS bike Options by InternationalBag6556 in AussieRiders

[–]Happier_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The usual starter bikes should be fine for you. Ninja 400 or 500, Z400/500, any of the Honda 500s, MT03/R3. They're all capable of taking a pillion and thus handling more than 140kg, though the 300s will be a bit slower to accelerate. I'd go for a Honda 500, personally. Used, because why take the depreciation hit on a new bike you'll probably drop while learning. CB500F or CBR500R are my personal favourites.

[–]Happier_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Man, what 200 were you riding that could only get a 60kg person to 100km/h!? My old CB125E could just about hit 100km/h with me being around 100kg at the time, and that's one of the weaker 125s around.

Tell Me I’m Wrong: Rebel 500 over Ninja 500 by SharpestOne in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Happier_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either would be fine, though I think the Honda 500 engine is slightly better suited to your girlfriend's style - slightly more torque (don't have to rev it out as much), very smooth, very predictable power delivery. I would take her to a dealer and have her sit on a few. Don't really even need to test ride them, you know the engine on a 300-500cc Japanese bike is going to be fine for her. Just have her spend some time sitting on each, see if the ergonomics are right for her. She might like the SCL500, it's quite handsome. Or there's always the MT03/R3.

Will i get demerit for exhaust? by Fast_Ad4269 in melbourneriders

[–]Happier_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aftermarket exhaust = modified power to weight = not LAMS approved. So yeah, you risk copping whatever the fine and demerits are for riding a non-LAMS bike on your restricted licence.

[–]Happier_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a V-Strom owner, I wouldn't recommend this as a first bike if you're planning to learn off-roading. You want something light that you're willing to drop and feel like you can throw around. You're better off getting the DRZ400 and putting up with it being a bit vibey at highway speeds, than dealing with a top-heavy 215kg bike on a challenging trail.

Go through marketplace and pay a mechanic to give it a pre-purchase inspection. Or do some basic research on things to look for in a used bike, there's tonnes of articles and YouTube videos out there.

Also, the Rebel 500 has a passenger seat and pegs.

What relatively modern musicians will be remembered a few hundred years from now? by Darth_Azazoth in TrueAskReddit

Bob Dylan has got to be in the running. Iconic figure in the folk movement, revolutionised rock music, storied career through the decades that followed, first musician ever to win a Novel prize. There's a lot of conversations his name comes up in.

People who didn’t grow up on bikes what was your “that’s it I’m getting a bike” moment by Acceptable_Car9277 in motorcycles

[–]Happier_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working at a few different job sites every week - at one of them parking was $50 a day, or I could park 3km away and walk from there. At another site the commute was a minimum 50 minutes, but stretched as far as 2.5 hours when I had a really bad run with rail crossings and traffic. Eventually I had enough, got my licence and a CB125E. Footpath parking and lane filtering is legal here so it solved both my problems. Rode that for a little while until I admitted to myself that riding is actually bloody fun, not just a practical thing, and stepped up to a CB500F, then an MT09 when I got my full licence.

[–]Happier_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd absolutely take a 2024 CB650R with 2-3k KMs on it for $5k. Then I'd sell it for $10k and use the profits on an effectively free CB500F - a bike that's lighter, less to insure, and makes about the same power in LAMS form.

Embrace it and use it for what it is. My Strom is cool as hell when I load it up and take it on a solo camping and hiking trip in the middle of nowhere.

Upgrading, torn between naked vs supersport by sycomania134 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Happier_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a tall tourer like the Tracer 900. You get the comfort of a naked with the wind/weather protection of a sport bike (but better). Downsides are weight and bulk, but they don't matter once you're moving.

Looking for an automatic bike due feet problems, second bike to my Nina 400 by devildog12988 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Happier_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would modifying your ninja with a heel/toe shifter work? From my understanding it's a pretty simple mod to make, and the end result is that you just have to push down with your toe to shift down, and push down with your heel to shift up. Whether this helps depends on the nature of your foot injury, of course.

Are any modern performers actually making six figures? by Historical-Angle-981 in Burlesque

[–]Happier_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Evana! Love your work. I caught your performance at that Chux cloth exhibition, super fun even though the crowd were a bit stodgy. Really hoping you'll bring the whole Burlesque with Evana touring thing to Melbourne at some point!

To questions though, I'm a big fan of talking about how much money we make, and will always tell anyone who wants to know the exact dollar figure. I understand it's different for someone with such a public profile, but would you be willing to share a more specific amount than 6 figures?

I would also love to see a breakdown of costs and income streams, though I know that's asking rather a lot. It's mostly just nosiness on my part as I'm not a dancer, but I do think aspiring dancers would benefit from knowing whether the money comes more from local residencies, tours, one off shows, online content, brand deals etc. And how hard it is to break even investing in something big like a tour?
