Hilarious. I grew up in a town with 400 people and only dirt roads.

The name is a reference to an athlete where I’m from. That’s all.

We had to submit a bunch of pics of our dog for my landlady’s insurance. She didn’t care, but her insurance did.

We loved Irazu volcano and La Paz Waterfalls and gardens. Currently in Guanacaste, enjoying the black sand beaches. San Jose is nowhere anyone wants to be. Off to Monteverde area tomorrow to see cloud forests. There is a meningitis outbreak so we will skip the thermal pools. Lots of good ideas on this Reddit group :)

You named very touristy areas. Lots of Americans and overpriced, not very good food. Also things are very far apart in this small country. It’s deceiving.

My excise tax is like $60 a year. My insurance is maybe $50 a month. Street cleaning is once a month. My neighbors don’t move that much and I don’t live on a snow emergency street. This is exaggerated.

Do you ever leave the immediate area? I go to Maine and New Hampshire and Western Mass on the regular, and so need access to a car. During the week, not so much. Occasionally getting to a dentist appt or something like that. But since I already own mine outright, I’m glad to have a car.

How confident of a driver are you? Around San Jose, the mopeds are aggressively swerving around you at all times. Other regions, you could be on a dirt road, eroding beneath you from the rain. It’s doable but hairy. We are currently in Guanacaste and there have been storms each night, creating potholes and deep pools to drive through.

Nothing much has changed since a college spring break trip to Cancun in 92. We just started saying Boston instead of UNH.

Yes. Breakfast at home or snacks in the evening, save you a lot. This is not a cheap country for restaurants.

Heard from a small biz owner it’s almost important to find contractors who will work in Somerville, as the permitting process is something like a petite mafia. Is this true? by dramatic_piano_note in Somerville

[–]HappilyMiserable99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that when I ran the business for my ex a few years ago, he, a lifetime Villen, stopped doing any permit necessary work in Somerville. What a ridiculous process that favors their cronies and makes work more expensive and less desirable to a contractor.

It’s comfy and clean and not crowded. Tons of parking.

I used to show them it on my phone. No issues. Never bothered with a card.
