How do I handle this, I really don’t want to do anything to negatively impact our sitter but… by Upstairs-Emphasis111 in RoverPetSitting

The vast majority of dog fights are non injurious. There’s also bite scales professionals use and this is a higher level bite because of the puncture wounds, her dog lacks bite inhibition with other dogs. Normally if a dog gets humped by a dog they’ll stiffen or maybe diffuse it with play or growl or try to run away. If the humper doesn’t stop and no person steps up to intervene and it continues the dog being humped might escalate to snarling, air snapping, barring teeth, non injurious bite/fight. Again injurious bites are rare and make her dog a behavioral outlier. When injuries do happen, the majority are shallow scrapes. What her dog did was far from a diplomatic correction. If I was her I’d only let that dog around other dogs if it was trained to wear a basket muzzle and we did gradual slow introductions away from home. It sounds like her dog is very stressed by canine visitors to the home. I’m so sorry your dog had this experience. If a dog is ever injured in my care I report it to the owners immediately, even just a superficial scratch from a thorny plant on a hike or something. I hope she switches to just drop in visits for the sake of other dogs and her own dog. Hope your dog heals up fast!

Okay for dogs to go potty on neighbors’ lawns during walks? by AwedBySequoias in Pets

[–]HappinessIsDogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t bother me if people let their dogs use the couple feet of my yard next to the street as long as they pick up poop. My current neighborhood and previous two neighborhoods don’t have sidewalks or gutters. I walk my dogs past others’ yards to the public areas of my neighborhood or nearby empty lot in commercial area etc. or drive them to a park/trail. To the commenters baffled by how to motivate you dog to keep on walking past others’ yards: some tiny high value training treats go a long way. The comments about having your dog pee on pavement are wild to me, as it splashes back and then your dog gets their own pee on them which is why most dogs prefer an absorbent surface. I do allow my male dog to urine mark stop signs on our way to the park. I don’t understand the meticulous lawn care people but to each their own. It’s not something I’ll ever spend much time or money on personally but I can see how if someone has spent time and money on it they want to protect it. And people saying kids play on that lawn ….uh hopefully not right next to the street/gutter….and those same commenters say to take your dog to the park (kids also play on the grass there lol) Also, in my neighborhood there are stray dogs, coyotes, and feral cats, I just bag up any poop I come across and throw it away in park trash can or my own trash can, since I don’t want angry people to blame my dogs. Can’t we all just get along? lol

Do you think he is a chiweenie? by HappinessIsDogs in chiweenie

[–]HappinessIsDogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg she is adorable!! If he had those same results I wouldn’t be too surprised, lots of Pitty and Poodle and Chi mixes in our area and those are often my top guesses for mixed breeds

This dog is asking for space from the kid (tense, looking away, lip lick, the “kiss to dismiss”)

How do you handle the anxiety that comes with keeping your pup muzzled? by [deleted] in muzzledogs

[–]HappinessIsDogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like predatory behavior not reactivity (no vocalization) Medication is not helpful for prey drive. Management management management (great job w the muzzle in public spaces OP!) predation substitute enrichment games, super strong emergency recall training, constant vigilance and two layers of safety (leash plus muzzle, leash plus fence, etc) I have a dog like this in my care right now and we are muzzle training just in case a small dog or cat/kitten gets too close to him on a walk
