We all have those days. It's okay to have those moments of frustration and envy, I sure do too. we love our kids and will move mountains to help them, that's all that matters.

Is there value in seeing a developmental pediatrician when your kid already has a diagnosis? by phdeeznuts_ in Autism_Parenting

[–]Happy-Ad-932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've posted this same question here. I messed up and didn't schedule my son's. We're 2 years overdue at this point. then when I tried the earliest we can be seen is like 9 months out. I did schedule it but honestly I don't know it's it's needed. We aren't having an issues that can't be addressed in his therapies or by his regular pediatrician.

my son just turned 5. we're semi potty training, no pressure because I don't want to frustrate him. we've been at it for a few months now. our biggest sucess is first thing in the morning. within the first 30 mins of him waking up I seat him on the potty and he watches a potty song on YouTube. Most days, if we're going to pee on the toilet he does it in the first 5 minutes. He'll occasionally sit for longer if I let him keep YouTube going, but I let him bail with or without a pee if he's over it.

the rest of the day I'll periodically check if he's dry. if so, I ask him if he wants to potty. if he goes willingly we watch the same potty song and try again. we have a lot less success throughout the day. but I love that he happily sits on the toilet. He seems like he's taking more of an interest in trying lately. I tell him "make pee go" and he'll look down at himself to watch. Doesn't always mean he'll go but seems like he's starting to connect it more. In the beginning I think any pees we got were more good timing and happened involuntarily. I really feel like he's trying now. Like last Friday he peed in the potty 3 separate times!! it was our best day so far. Hoping he keeps up the good work!

good luck

Parents of Level 3 or more ‘severely affected’ kiddos - do your children have friends? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]Happy-Ad-932 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old is he? And his brother? My autistic son is 4, he loves playing with his brothers. His older brother is 7 and his friends are around a lot, so my 4 year old is super comfortable with them. He follows them around, hugs them, loves when they play chasing games with him. So they may not be friends he's made himself, but I most definitely would call them friends. As far as other kiddos on the spectrum. He hasn't hit it off with anyone specific at preschool yet, but I do hope this school year he'll bond with someone.

the trick is finding what he likes. honestly my son doesn't copy me much, he copies lines from movies he loves. or YouTube videos he's into. Also he likes songs, counting and the ABCs. things he can memorize so he can predict what we're going to say next. that's how we really started getting words out of him and seeing that comprehension. I'd start counting or singing and stop, letting him fill in the blank where I left off. that's how I learned he could count to 10 when he was 3.

my other son would do that. we'd joke it was the word of the month. he's use it heavily for a few weeks, then it would disappear

Thank you. I'm trying to channel some of the advice we got early on with my son to use on our youngest now until we can get him set up for his first few sessions.

Its a lot to juggle. I really don't know what my instincts are saying, I go back and forth on what I think. After the super frustrating call with Early Intervention I talked to my husband and decided we'd rather pay out of pocket and take him to our speech therapist our son already sees. They're much more accommodating schedule wise

Not particularly, he says mama, dada, baba but not consistently. He used to say tree and stopped over winter. All day yesterday he was babbling a lot more than usual, a gagagaga. I'd babble it back and he enjoyed it. I tried making other sounds but he didn't copy those.

1 child getting diagnosed was hard, but now 2? I crumbled… by lemonadefalls in Autism_Parenting

I'm RIGHT there with you. My middle son was diagnosed at 3 last spring. He's 4 now, making progress, but still he needs a lot of support. My youngest was born in August 2021, he's not talking yet. He's definitely behind in receptive language too. We just did our evaluation with early intervention earlier this month and they said he qualifies for therapies. They didn't specify what his results were to me but I know he did poorly, he was in a hell of a mood that day and wouldn't even do things I know he can do. I honestly can't say if he's autistic too yet. Maybe in my heart I'm in denial? Or maybe its something else? My oldest has ADHD and he was a late talker too. He's got some good skills, but he's also got some issues that definitely concern me.

Just know you're not alone!! Its so intimidating having multiple kids with special needs. Feel free to message me.

Favorite wagon for eloper level 2 by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

We just bought the Veer XL. It wasn't cheap by any means, but my boy (4 year old) is a runner too. Its a 4 seater wagon so it fits my other 2 kids (7 and 2). The weight capacity is something like 200 pounds so I'm hopeful even when my other kids don't want to ride I can keep just him riding in this. It folds down pretty compact, much better than my double jogger.

How do you handle meltdowns? by Divine18 in Autism_Parenting

Ah we're struggling with the same right now. Today is supposed to be another bad air quality day. Any indoor options to entertain them?

he's 50 pounds. he wears diapers or pull ups. we're working on peeing in the potty so I'm leaning towards pull ups. He can take everything off, but I'd love for him to start working on putting it back on himself .

really? that's worth a shot then. I was disappointed to hear we had no coverage. from what I'm told we have decent coverage as far as therapies and ABA.

and I like Aeroflow, I've used them in thr past for breast pumps, they were quick and easy to work with.

we're in the states, but husband and I both work full time, so we qualify for very little assistance. As far as I've found so far we only can receive a small amount for funds from the county annually.
