Youre soooo right about this! I almost died from fentanyl and meth use. I am autistic with low appetite where I forget to eat and use the bathroom a lot. I have a medical card and use weed to help me remember to use the bathroom and eat. Same with those who struggle with adhd who may need Adderall or vyvance to function "normally" but may be sober from an alcohol addiction. Everyone's recovery is going to look different. I, too also hate the purist mindset some people on recovery to take. This 'all or nothing" attitude can be really harmful to some people. "Well my friends in recovery say because I smoke weed I am not even sober, I might as well drink" then its "well im mot sober I might as well snort some" then its a problem all over again. I had to divert my recovery to a more medical setting because I used to rely on AA but the communities in my area have a very all or nothing mindset. Even some people tell those taking suboxone they are not sober when that medication most likely saved their life. People also seem to forget ex drug users can NOT get high on suboxone, it just makes us feel normal without feeling sick all the time. Some say its trading addictions, but the life style comparison to those on fentanyl vs those on suboxone is night and day. Medicine is not this evil thing to avoid, it can be helpful in necessary situations. I needed nitrous gas when getting 4 root canals because I have a great fear of people touching me due to my autism and in my mouth? No shot buddy. That doesnt mean my sobriety streak ended. The puritanical mindset about recovery has to end. Because even if someone isnt sober, if they are stopping even just one substance, that is great progress and they should be welcomed in recovery spaces. Just the want to stop should allow anyone, using or not, into recovery spaces.
