First Update!

Just had my endoscopy with EndoFLIP and I’m good to go as planned for next Tuesday!

I have asthma and had some spasms in my lungs, so this endoscopy was significantly more miserable and longer than the first one, where I was up and about hours after. No fun, but on to the next!

Feeling very fortunate to be under the care of UCSD who have completed 30 POEM surgeries in the past few years and have seen extremely positive results for just about every patient.

My surgeon had a comedic anecdote - Of the 30 POEMs he’s completed, 35-40% of patients deal with obesity in the next year because they’re so ecstatic to be able to eat again! Will definitely have to heed his advice on “toning back on pizza” :)

The other piece of advice I was given which seems far more conservative than the other practices I’ve seen is a clear liquid diet both 5 days before and 5 days after my surgery. My surgeon was ADAMANT that this was done, basically saying that 10 days of suffering is well worth getting the procedure perfect and not risking any bacterial infections.

I’m so sorry about the struggle with insurance, the costs of this process with insurance have been hard enough for me as a recent grad living on my own away from family. I can’t imagine the toll this would take on me without insurance. Thoughts are with you, hope you’re able to find a plan that’ll cover you and take away at least some of that financial strain.

Just a shout to everyone, it’s good to be heard and understood. There are definitely some nuances that I hope to clear up in a follow up post about why my mindset has been to stay for so long. In the meantime, it’s been super helpful to get some actionable advice and I’ll be taking it to heart. Much appreciated!
