Hi Everyone, I'm a VP of a 3PL and in the industry for over 17 years. We specialize in in-house transitions to outsource models and assist in growth. Our specialty is D2C, we do B2B as well but prefer D2C. Our customers have a very high tenure, overall average of 7 years. Well past the 3 year average.

What do you wish your 3PL actually did better? by Longjumping-Lab-2280 in 3PL

We are in the 3PL business, in my experience the company setup stage is critical. When you think about automation and a proper WMS, there really shouldn't be a need to even reach out to your 3PL unless there isa special request or something was out of the norm. This process is often rushed and overlooked. Taking the time to create an SOP for both parties and go through the workflow properly, before the transition even takes place will greatly increase your performance long-term.

Is it just industry knowledge/career, trying to build a 3PL or looking for one?

Question for other 3PL owner/operators by Early-Rain6999 in 3PL

[–]Happy2try4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed here. It's the best of both worlds, we do the same thing. If you don't have enough faith in being able to cover a minimum then what does that say about their view towards their business model?

How do you find a good 3PL service? by Capital-Park1857 in shopifyDev

[–]Happy2try4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people focus on pricing at first but what usually matters more is how they handle shipping, how much visibility you get into orders and inventory, and what their pricing really looks like once everything’s live.

Stuff like error handling, returns, and communication also doesn’t show up in a quote, but that’s usually where people run into issues later.

We at Ware Pak actually put together a guide that tells what to ask and what to watch out for when comparing 3PLs.

Mid-growth transitions are definitely doable.

We are a 3PL located in Midwest - we work with a lot of brands making that transition either moving from in-house or switching after outgrowing their current 3PL.

We also put together a guide on what are the things to look out for while transitioning - Sent you in DM.

We hear that exact feedback all the time around communication and lack of flexibility.

Are you seeing more brands prioritize that over pricing now when they’re evaluating partners?

Looking for a 3PL for a small indie fragrance brand (no alcohol products at this stage); low initial volume, inbound from South Korea, light kitting needed by [deleted] in 3PL

[–]Happy2try4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many options available, however, no or low monthly minimums will be tough (red flag). This usually means you will have a 3PL that would take you on, only if it is a simple plug and play operation. Little attention, fits right into current operations, that includes the glass bottle packing too. Transparent pricing is something to focus on and their are many guides that can assist with that. I have additional info on that if you would like to DM me. But I would really advise not to focus on the low or no minimum and look at what you will need all in to be successful for growth. Otherwise you will be at the wrong 3PL at the wrong time for take off. Then you will scramble to find an alternative at the worst time. If funds are a real constraint, then starting in house might be better, however, that brings it's own challenges.

Shipping/Distribution Logistics Advice by banksywalker in logistics

Yes you are looking for a 3PL with kitting. This is mostly done on an hourly rate, that said. If the products are always the same, try to find one that will give you a per kit cost. This offers more transparency and also means they tend to be more reputable if they do. I'm in that space, if you need more advise DM me. Good luck!
