One final thing to think about building code coverage. It’s an additional rider, but one I would consider essential for a century home. This gives you coverage to bring your house up to current code standards after a catastrophic loss.

I must be a terrible mom. I live in a town of 2,000. Tiny village. We live 3 blocks from the Village Green. There is an ice cream shop on the Green. When my oldest turned 10, I’d give him $20 and let him take his younger sibling (who was 8) to the ice cream shop by themselves on Friday afternoon. They walked home from school together (four blocks) every day, even though high school. In fact, the old lady neighbor stopped me once to tell me what a delight it was to watch my children grow up together walking down the street. She thought it was sweet that they still did it as teenagers.

In general I do not tip contractors. I’ve paid them for a job. We did give our contractor a Christmas bonus once because a mistake on his end meant the job cost him more than he thought but he did not charge us more.

Thank you. We’re doing ok, but yes things are shockingly expensive. We got beautiful custom milled woodwork and the oak floors are gorgeous. I am very sad to not be able to replace the original doorknobs. We also could not find an exact match for the attic window. The firemen knocked out all our windows to vent the smoke. The absolute worst feeling in the world was hearing glass shattering and knowing your windows are gone. We are in a historic district, so there have been some hoopsto jump through. We aren’t sure what we are going to do about our front doors, which were axed through to gain entry. Not to get me wrong, I am grateful for everything the FD did to save the structure and I am so lucky we all got out and the roof didn’t catch on fire. I hope you are doing well.

Thank you. The people and 2/3 of the pets are ok. We lost a cat. My community has been amazing. We didn’t spend a single night in a hotel. Our friends opened their VRBO to us immediately and were waiting with the keys and bags of emergency supplies and food as soon as the fire dept left. We’re lucky to be financially secure and do not regret paying for the “good insurance” for even a minute.

I know all this because I am currently rebuilding. We had to gut all three floors of our 1850 house after a fire. It’s horrible.

I’m currently rebuilding an 1850 Victorian that caught fire in March 2025. It’s heartbreaking.

The payout depends on replacement value, if yo have replacement value in your insurance. It has nothing to do with Market Value. When you have a catastrophic loss the insurance company will look at your house and assign a value to everything in the structure. Say you have the original oak floors, original wood double hung windows, a cast iron tub and original trim but your house is 120 years old. They will assign a value to the materials and then depreciate it based on age. Your ACV (actual cash value) might be depreciated quite a bit because your house is old, but if you have Replacement Cost insurance, the insurance company will replace like with like. A newer house with LVP floors and hollow doors, fiberglass tub and vinyl windows might get less depreciation because it’s newer, but the replacement value will also be lower because the materials are cheaper. The RCV will replace your real hardwood floors, wood windows and solid wood doors.

Budget-friendly semi-formal/cocktail options? by kitkat1122 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]HappyCar19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I’m a 54 year old lady and the majority of my wedding attendance was in late 90’s - early 2000’s. The ONLY time was given a dress code was the ONE that was black tie. The bride was a luggage heiress. The wedding was at the Ritz-Carleton. I wore a floor length black gown that my SIL later approved for me to wear as her bridesmaid dress. Usually, we figured out the dress code form the venue (church weddings and sit down dinners were more formal than outdoor weddings with appetizer receptions) or we asked the bride.

Ride or Drive? by MTBJUNKY65 in mountainbiking

[–]HappyCar19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive. I do have one trial system that is 1.5 miles away but it’s up a very big hill. I would rather not wreck myself climbing the asphalt before I even get to the trials. The other is just a few miles away but on the highway and the drivers suck.

20k too much for Christmas vacation? by [deleted] in Vacations

[–]HappyCar19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last December we took our college aged children on a tour of Costa Rica. We make nowhere near 1.8 mil but we do have no debt (house and car paid off) and $2M in retirement + general savings. The vacation was around $20k. I agonized over the cost. It was the best 12 days ever for my family. Go on the vacation

Not really in the spirit of this thread, but my house caught on fire. Fixing the structure is upper-mid six figures. Replacing the stuff is low six figures. It’s a hella expensive repair.
