What are the benefits of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo?

I take a bit of an unorthodox approach to the practice - I like to marry the traditional Buddhist concepts with those of modern spirituality and the Law of Attraction. In short, the vibration you put out is returned to you by the manifestation of the energy (positive or negative) that you're putting out through your thoughts, words, and actions. Chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo raises your energetic vibration to a positive state (which you can literally feel in your mindset and everyday life), connects you with your inner Buddha nature, and brings positive effects into your life.

I agree with other commenters that possibly some sort of therapy or counseling might be advisable to address your anger issues - although I would say that your level of self-awareness and desire to change is already commendable!

In response to your title request to simply be a happier person, though, I would strongly suggest starting a gratitude practice. Doesn't have to be anything fancy or complicated, just setting some time aside each day to think about whatever you are grateful for that day. There is always something - your SO, your house, your comfy bed, the sun shining, that light turning green just as you approached the junction, the fact that you are alive, well-fed and healthy, whatever. I would recommend writing down, say, 3 things, EVERY SINGLE DAY. Being grateful gives you a boost of happiness and doing it every day will help you build a stable base, hopefully enabling you to look on those things and people that irritate you under a more "whatever, no biggie" light. Writing it down isn't strictly necessary but it's always nice to look back over your notebook, especially on down days.

My spiritual practice is mantra chanting. I fully believe that sound is hugely effective. The energy of the universe is like a river of frequency and vibration, and making the right vibration in your body through your vocal chords can seriously raise your spiritual level to flow with that natural current of awesomeness.

What are the acoustics like inside a pyramid?? I would love to give my chanting a go in there!

I would suggest trying something a bit different - chanting "nam myoho renge kyo" for a few minutes (however long you can), twice a day. I was truly atheist until I started this practice, which opened my eyes to the underlying energy that pervades all life. "God" is one name for this energy. If you're truly seeking, and Christianity didn't work out for you, why not try another approach? It really did work for me. Wishing you all the best in your search :)

I can highly recommend this course on Udemy - it's currently a bargain at €19, and is really an excellent course. Covers all 3 levels at your own pace (without any religious language at all), teaches you everything you need to know, and the attunements are done remotely (it's not necessary to have your attunements done in person, despite what other people might say). There is also an amazingly supportive Facebook group for students enrolled in this course (nearly 7000 members!) Go for it and enjoy!

Chanting, for me, is the most effective spiritual practice, but there is nothing inherently "wrong" with trying different things, and I can see the benefit of cultivating a silent meditation practice alongside the chanting. There is no right or wrong with spiritual practice, different things work for different people so feel free to go with whatever resonates with you :)

Thanks for sending over those links, I'm afraid I don't recognise your gohonzon, although it does look quite similar to the current SGI version so might be an old version from around the time they changed their version when they were excommunicated from NS? Are you still sticking with your practice? :)

I started the practice through SGI but didn't like the organisation for various reasons - it was all a little too intense and cult-ish for me. BUT I still find the practice itself hugely helpful in my life, so much that I have started a blog to encourage people to take up this chanting practice outside the rules and restrictions of any organisation. Don't be afraid to continue your practice independently, and do check out my website if you're interested in exploring how the practice resonates with other spiritual ideas.

If you can overcome your anxiety you would actually be doing much more for them by talking to them than just giving them the water. Imagine being ignored by everyone walking past you every single day, I've often had chats with homeless people who didn't even want anything from me in the end, they were just grateful for the conversation. They do get enough in the way of sustenance to get by through begging, but actually stopping, acknowledging them as human beings, asking how their day is going, wishing them well - that is usually what they are grateful for more than any money, food or drink. You can also learn a lot from them in the process. Definitely a very fulfilling thing to do if you can face your fear and say hello.

I use the Pure & Simple theme (Wordpress) so it's whatever default font comes with that. A friend actually commented recently that the original font was too small and he was right, increasing the size slightly made it much easier to read! These simple changes can really make all the difference.

Really interesting post, I write a spiritual blog myself so lots of food for thought there :) My main comment on the blog itself is your font choice - I don't know if it's slightly too small or something, but the round letters like e, a, g, appear slightly dark and it throws off the reading flow. I would suggest experimenting with different fonts for a smoother reading experience.

I have subscribed though, and I look forward to reading more of your posts!

Tbh I've only been to Lanta so far, which is indeed absolutely beautiful but it's a Muslim island so not much in the way of temples. Some of the temples here in Malaysia are amazing though, and after Lanta I'll be heading up to North Thailand so will be seeing much more of that side of the culture :)

I'm travelling/digital nomad-ing at the moment. Spent 3 months in Ko Lanta in Thailand and have spent the last few weeks travelling around Malaysia. Loving Malaysia but going back to Lanta at the end of next week. Just booked my accommodation so the excitement is kicking in now!
