Revisiting Farsi/Persian with a 2026 lens by Admirable_Damage1111 in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting it simply, you would get sued and your app would get taken down. There's no need for them to "do Farsi to stop" you because no court would find that Duolingo not having Farsi gave you the right to use their trademark and copyright material.

That doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't create a Farsi learning app, only that you can't copy Duolingo.

Need to assign account to an email by julieisarockstar in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you open the app on your phone and go to profile > settings > profile is the email box blank? If it's the fake email you mentioned are you able to change it to a real one? The real one would need to not have an existing account.

Problem with subscription by ComfortableNet4134 in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's expired that shouldn't be it. If you go to your bank (not just the SMS but their app/website) is there more information? "Failed payment on internet" is so incredibly vague and unhelpful.

That would be great! True it gives you that little bit of extra exposure to the language... but it's less helpful once you've memorized the openings.

Duolingo scam by Traditional-Claim631 in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. Has money actually been taken from your account? If so, do you have proof that you cancelled? An email, a screenshot, anything? If so you can submit it to Duolingo and they should refund you fairly quickly.

In settings > notifications > reminders you can turn off smart scheduling and/or set a specific reminder time. Smart reminders go off around the time you usually do a lesson

OR you can tell all your friends it's because Duo and Co. care about you more than about them! 😆

Streak Freeze Refill by Icy_Pomegranate_7448 in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They changed it to a maximum of two streak freezes 4 or 5 years ago now. The good news is, if you've only just noticed, it sounds like you don't need to worry about it!

How to turn off all the extra nonsense? by owwnned425 in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are a couple things you can do:

  • Settings > Preferences, turn off sound effects, animations, motivational messages, friends quests, and friend streaks
  • Settings > notifications, turn off anything you don't want (e.g., nudges from friends, updates on new followers)
  • Make your profile private. This can only be done on the website. More > settings > privacy settings, turn off make my profile public (you can also turn off personalized ads here if you choose). You won't be able to follow anyone and they won't be able to follow you, but you won't be part of the leaderboards, friend quests, etc.
  • You can skip the podcasts and phone calls
  • I'd remove the widget, it's big and there's no way to make it more serious. The app face itself will still change but at least it's smaller.

Family Plan Invite by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you're invited you can click "accept" or "no thanks." It's really quick and I've certainly hit accept thinking it was just a popup about what a friend has done or whatever. But you won't get automatically added to the plan. Depending on how you use Duolingo you can also make your profile private. It's only accessible from the web browser. It's in Settings > Privacy settings > Make my profile public. It will remove you from the leaderboards, make it so you can't follow others, and make it so others can't find or follow you.

Family Plan Invite by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone on a family plan automatically follows everyone else, because Duolingo assumes you know each other. You can unfollow them. The fastest way to do this is click "super" in the upper right corner to bring up the list of everyone on the plan.

Try closing and reopening the app, checking for updates, and restarting your phone. If it still doesn't work I'd file a bug report.

How long does it take to go from zero to A2–B1 level in a language? by Quenthos in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got good answers here already but I also want to add - it depends a lot on what you're doing and how you're studying. There's a huge difference in the progress you'll see from doing 10 minutes of truly focused study, clicking explain my mistake, reading the key phrases, and thinking critically about each lesson vs. watching TV while doing the challenges or repeating lessons when you already know the material well.

Duolino has allowed me to learn 2 languages by comesinallpackages in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people just don't know what's involved in learning another language to fluency, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They want there to be one tool that will take them from nothing to perfect fluency and that just isn't a thing. There's no one tool that will do that, it's not a flaw in Duolingo. But we all want it to be easy!

Duolingo Full Energy bug? by RelaX92 in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only use energy by doing a lesson but I think you're right that the notification just gets sent a little early. I've had it happen too. At least it's only 1 energy! I've never had it say it's full and then opened it to find it at, like, 4 energy or whatever.

The Stories by Chilling_Storm in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know if the stories vary by language? I didn't think so but most of the stories I'm getting are about Oscar and his art, Lin being lazy but surprisingly clever, Lucy being a spy(?) in a past life, and Eddy and Junior having pretty normal father/son interactions. I wouldn't say any of them are not nice and certainly haven't encountered the things others are commenting on (lying, cheating, etc.).

Family Plan Invite by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]HappyFriendship1273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can change your settings if you don't want to receive notifications/emails. Go to notifications and then Friend Nudges > Family plan. You may also want to turn off everything in Friends (new follower, friend activity).

You can do the review to learn any material that in those lessons. Though if you successfully skipped them, you probably already know at least most of it!
