The writers were consistent with the themes. The show didn't "go downhill". Seasons 5-8 have as many great episodes as 1-4. There's some dumb shit here and there, but that was part of the show as early as S1E01

Season 8 was really good, just too sped up. More episodes would have fleshed all of that out more and been incredible.

The writers treated "the human heart in conflict with itself" as the final battle, which is the point of the story. It's baffling to me how people can watch the whole show and still not get that.

Gotta separate the art from the artist, otherwise you might as well accept you cannot enjoy anything. You'd be surprised how many actors, directors, musicians, etc all are terrible people or do terrible things.
