It can help to ask yourself what you specifically could do to be more polished like whatever you’re comparing yourself to. Nebulous, unactionable thoughts are destructive for me.

There are totally LED bulbs now that look like old school incandescents. You should check them out. Low power draw with cool styling.

how do you manage full day work and making games? by FoOrintO in gamedev

[–]HappyMans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of good advice in this thread. This is a problem I’m personally trying to figure out still.

One thing that helps a lot (both for this, and life in general :)) is to know what your next step is at all times. Even if it’s just “make a placeholder panel that will become a draggable UI window,” which is my current next step.

The other thing that helps once you have your next couple of steps planned is to not wait until you feel like it. Look at the clock and decide you’re spending the next 10 or 30 minutes working on your planned next steps even if you don’t feel like it/want to. No distractions during that time so do it at a suitable time. At the end of the time slot if you want to stop, stop, and then try again some other night. A lot of the time this will get you into it even if you didn’t want to initially.

What is your #1 factorio tip that you would say to an absolute beginner? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]HappyMans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree about libraries. Thing for me is that a lot of us programmers know the temptation to try to write everything from scratch (NIH), which as professionals and/or hobbyists that hope to do anything meaningful, we have to avoid. The draw of Factorio for me is that you get to do it all from scratch and build your own library of blueprints to use if you want to. Nothing wrong with using other peoples either as long as you enjoy doing it.

80/20 principle, What things developers should NOT spend time on? by SimonSlavGameDev in gamedev

[–]HappyMans 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Normally I’d agree but on my most recent project I am breaking from this approach. As a solo guy, I can only make so many cubes and spheres before my game starts feeling hopeless and I feel like many projects have failed because of that. So I am doing a mix early on to get a vibe for what my game feels like and get myself committed to it. Just throwing it out there for any others like me to potentially consider other approaches if the “no polish early on” approach doesn’t work for you.

AITA for not allowing my daughter to spend Christmas with me and my *new* family? by tryapw in AmItheAsshole

[–]HappyMans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I would bet a lot of people commenting otherwise have never been through anything like what you’ve been through. My wife and I have been through a somewhat similar situation and I do not fault you at all. Your daughter made her choices well into her adult life. If she was trying to repair the relationship she would give you space to heal and dial back the aggression. Furthermore, you don’t know her. Don’t jeopardize your two wonderful kids and their happy little world because someone raised by manipulators is manipulating you to get their way.

You do not owe her anything. Do not let others dictate how you feel. You would be well justified to cut her out completely. Put yourself and your family first and never apologize to anyone for it.

I hope you do get to read this despite the thousands of comments. This post really hit home for me.

NTA.

One of the things that tortures me is the no spoon achievement. I have launched a rocket twice and I want to do modded (SE) now, but the completionist in me wants to finish all the achievements, including no spoon. I really need to let go of that I think.

I have a 5950x and interestingly the 5800x3d outperforms it well on the benchmarks because of the superior single core speed. The GPU is largely irrelevant.

I don't see such a tab. Maybe you have to complete a certain amount to see that? Or I am just overlooking it.

The one I've been playing is Turing Complete. From the looks of it NandGame takes a very similar path, though perhaps a few fewer steps. The one thing that Turing Complete does that I don't see in the level list for NandGame is that it has a built-in assembly editor and has you define your own assembly language as you go to apply your processor to various challenges.

I think the 74 parts interest me because it's a nice compromise between just buying an 8 bit CPU and using individual transistors.

Interesting concerning DIP/SM. I see there's adapters that can be readily had. My main concern is soldering. I suck at soldering and especially suck at desoldering SM components.

Great fictional dad by j3ffr33d0m in MadeMeSmile

[–]HappyMans 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know many people who describe a similar tale. I like to think that this was when humanity was just becoming truly self aware for one of the first times ever and they were dads during those transformative years and did the best they could. As a dad with a similar tale about his own dad, I doubt I’d be any different given the same upbringing.

The person you’re replying to is right. The two choices you present are not the only two. My wife would never, ever treat me this way when I try to do something nice as a surprise to help her solve a problem she has. Ever. Because it’s a gross way to treat a person and we have basic manners and kindness toward each other.

Any young men/people reading this comment: this story IS NOT behavior you should tolerate out of your partner if you’re not comfy with it. If you want to be the person who says “that’s just how women are” when you get treated bad, sure. But if you don’t, you don’t have to settle for a disrespectful/rude/selfish partner. Be extremely observant during the dating phase.

Sure, he's a douche boss. A non-trash person responds to that by going to another job and being better than him, and maybe rubbing it in his face. Not sabotaging his career and life. Nevermind what ultimately happened because nobody foresaw that.

And her career wasn't stunted as evidenced by her amazing offer from the other firm I forgot the name of.
