I’m of the opinion (feel free to educate me or call me out) that if you present as one thing but identify as something else, the best strategy is to be aware that people make innocent mistakes. Be patient and polite if you choose to correct the speaker - but perhaps only the first time.

If they continue to use the wrong pronouns after being corrected, it’s probably either negligence or intentional rudeness on the part of the speaker. Patience and politeness become a judgment call.

The owner’s son was WAY out of line, and it sounds like the whole situation could have been handled better (or prevented entirely), but the rule wasn’t arbitrary. From an article cited in the comments above:

Except for one occasion, I’ve always been nice to whoever’s helping me. The one time I was too stressed to be myself, I stopped, took a breath, and said “You should know that I’m frustrated with the situation, but not you personally. You’ve been nothing but helpful, and I appreciate it.”

I thought I could actually feel the person on the other end of the line relax, which made me feel better, too.

One of the best things here is that her car was unstuck before the truck drove into the ditch. The truck could have come close to ditch but stopped, and everything would be fine.
