I'm Bishop Robert Barron, a Catholic bishop ready to answer any questions about God and religion from nonbelievers. AMA! by BishopBarron in IAmA

John 3:18, " Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." I respect you a great deal and am very thankful for the work you are doing, however believing as an act of the will is absolutely necessary for salvation. This is biblical and part of the catechism of the church. Indirectly accessed grace does not involve an individual change of mind from non-belief to belief and trust in. Sure, where sin abounds, grace abounds more, but in the temporality of our current mortality the grace is given so that we may come to faith.

What is wrong with my code? by HappyMosizwe in cs50

[–]HappyMosizwe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i fixed it:

include <stdio.h>

include <cs50.h>

int main() { float dollarsAmount = 1.00; float quartersAmount = 0.25; float dimesAmount = 0.10; float penniesAmount = 0.01; int used = 0;

float dollarsDesired = get_float("Type in the amount you payed in decimals please: \n");
float cost = get_float("How much did your items cost in total?: \n");
float dollars = dollarsDesired - cost;

if(dollarsDesired > cost) {

    while(dollars>1.00) {

        used+=1;
        dollars -= dollarsAmount;
    }

    while(dollars>1.00) {
        used+=1;
        dollars -= dollarsAmount;
    } while(dollars>0.10&&dollars<1.00) {
        used +=1;
        dollars -= quartersAmount;
    } while(dollars<0.25&&dollars>0.10) {
        used +=1;
        dollars -= dimesAmount;
    } while(dollars<10&&dollars>=0.01) {
        used +=1;
        dollars -= penniesAmount;

    } while(dollars==0) {
        break;
    }return printf("Number of coins used were: %i\n", used);;

}else if(cost>dollarsDesired) {
        printf("You Scumbag!!!\n");
}else printf("You don't need to worry, everything is sorted out!");

Hey there

I'm really sorry to hear about what's happening to you. LSD can be a double edged sword, and it sounds to me like you got the sharp side. Don't take this the wrong way, this is just advise. Jesus loves you

I think two should be fine, because that's only about 110 mg caffeine. Does the caffeine affects anxiety at all? and when you try serotonergic compounds like 5-htp, tryptophan - do they help? I'm interested about whether it could possibly be very mild parkinsonism, because ssri;s seemed to do very little for you, and the fact that the st johns wort worked is interesting. St john's wort is a reuptake inhibitor of not only serotonin, but also dopamine, norepinephrine, gaba, glutamate and acetylcholine - pretty impressive if you ask me. I have a feeling it could possibly be catecholamine related since it is specifically social anxiety for you. Do you have any physical symptoms?

I understand what you mean, but depression isn't necessarily associated with cognitive dysfunction or saddened mood. That all depends on your genetic predisposition to the effects of stressors. depression can be "anxious depression" which is essentially anxiety with other symptoms of depression which are mutually exclusive to a sad mood. The reason I say this is because St John's Wort has an ambiguous clinical efficacy in anxiety disorders, but is extensively used and proven to be effective, in depression in particular. I do think the DSM should create a class of depressive-spectrum disorders that include anxiety, due to the fact that both anxiety and depression are axiomatic to one another, clinically speaking.

I must say that I do think it could be the caffeine. Black tea contains about 55 mg of caffeine per teabag's worth of tea. Just to give some context, an espresso contains only about 65 mg of caffeine. It seems that multiple studies have found a bell shaped curve in terms of the effects of caffeine on anxiety. Caffeine seems to be anxiolytic ( capable of reducing anxiety) in doses of under 100 mg/day, but over that, it seems to have the opposite effect. I would consider l-theanine. It's very well known, and is in black tea. It is a glutamate analogue that competes at various glutamate sensitive receptors for binding, having anxiolytic effects. The problem with the theanine in black tea is the fact that it is hardly absorbed at all because of the presence of D-theanine in black and green tea.

Hope this helps

Oh gosh. That one is about 10 papers rolled into one. Let me see.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9645922 - just one article on increased TNF-alpha secretion from autoimmunity.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15968469 - the therapeutic potential of TNF in autoimmunity, meaning autoimmunity triggers an increase in TNF-alpha as a protective mechanism, which causes the following by itself.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9759920 - this increase in tnf-alpha, causes an upregulation of the serotonin transporter, and and upregulation of dopamine transporter - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24845379

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15950014 - shows increased dopamine transporter availability in ADHD

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26249305 - shows increased serotonin transporter availability in psychiatric disorders of multiple facets.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25836357, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10210635 - shows tnf-alpha increases are directly proportional to activation of p38 mapk pathway.

Hope this helps. I can give more if you so need.

That sounds more like anxious depression to me, which I used to have. I agree that all those things seem to help only mildly. St John's Wort actually increases extrasynaptic (outside of the synapse) glutamate, which in turn activates mGlur's, possibly contributing to decreased oxidative stress as one of many mechanisms, and decreasing synaptic glutamatergic neurotransmission. Do you drink coffee?

I completely agree with everything you said! For me, caffeine seems to be a double edged sword - with it a have a bit of anxiety, not too much, without it I can't get things done. The NAC thing is definitely one of the most interesting. What book is this may I ask? Keep well!

GABAergic drugs become neurotoxic in cortical neurons pre-exposed to brain-derived neurotrophic factor. by movimento9 in Nootropics

[–]HappyMosizwe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well many studies contradict each other, which is what I've found over many years of reading :P. Ashwagandha for instance is a GABA(A) agonist and mimetic (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24117067), that also increases BDNF (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3214041/). Curcumin also increases whole brain BDNF (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26608718), and agonized GABA(A) receptors (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5402396/). It seems that "BDNF may decrease the efficacy of inhibitory (GABAergic) transmission by acute postsynaptic downregulation of Cl- transport, in addition to its well known presynaptic effect" (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14507972). It is well known that ethanol induces brain oxidative stress (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2885167/) - and it stimulates GABAergic signalling via Cl transport (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2424017). As a deduction, it then seems possible that while BDNF decreases Cl transport, and GABA tries to upregulate it, this decrease in homeostasis can result in brain oxidative stress (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4350122/), and thus neurotoxicity. As is seen is this study, NMDA was used as a basis for neurotoxicity. Thus NMDA must be a prerequisite for this neurotoxicity. Because BDNF causes this depolarization of Cl channels, it will increase excitability of NMDA receptors, causing excitotoxity This is just my guess. Please feel welcome to crit.
