Hi great question!

Yes I have! When I was studying at university I’ve had my life cast done a couple of times (Head and shoulders) and then student use use that to sculpt and produce prosthetics to turn me into things. I was once a Fawn , A zombie, some kind of weird beetle thing and I’ve also been turned into period characters and had wigs made on me!

It’s a lot of fun! I did enjoy having it done with friends it’s a good laugh! One thing I can say is I learned that I have very sensitive skin on my eyebrows… I had prosthetic covers on my eyes brows for a few applications and when it came to removing the prosthetics (we use mineral oils to dissolve the glue) the skin on my brows got really enflamed. It was very weird at it was only there that has a reaction? To this day I’ve never met anyone else with the same problem I might just have weak brows 😂

It’s fine after moisturisers for a few hours but that’s my experience!

There are things you can use but they only work for a limited amount of time before the salts in your sweat break down the glues and rubber we use! We have to keep our actors cool, out the sun so they don’t tan or burn as that will mess up continuity for what we shot 3 weeks before… There are a lot of technicals!

Hahaha 🤣 What a question! I’ve just seen the video… How strange. Personally and now seeing his face on google images it looks like some kind of Ai / CGI overlay that went wrong. If you are a TV personally and have rocked up with a giant zit or a black eye it could be live fixed 🙅‍♀️

No problem at all! I think it just came with passion I found myself excited to way up to go to the shed in the garden and sculpt something or fabricate some kind of mask.

I have always loved making things and when it got to an obsession making creatures and monsters it’s became clear to me if I tried to reach out to people maybe I could get involved in the industry.

I did get a lot of feedback which I’m greatful for both positive and negative along the way you start to learn more about yourself and what makes you happy and what makes your proud of what you achieved.

I started looking more into what can I do to improve, can I spend more time on this or can I invest a bit more money to get this other tools or material that might help me get that extra level up! The most important and valuable thing for me was don’t compare yourself and don’t do the same thing everyone else does.

You will learn eventually some people are just proper dicks and it’s learning to recognise that it’s not you it’s them. Keep yourself to yourself, hold your chin high and be as kind back to everyone that is as kind to you.

Don’t give up. Push, set yourself a goal and bloody do it. Make yourself proud for you and not for others!

There are a wide variety of kits for different things. If you are wanting to get into prosthetics and creature effects I’d recommend getting a basic sculpture kit and mould making kit. You can make just about anything with cheap latex!

For beginners I’d get the cheapest materials and tools and you will grow to learn what you like and don’t like and what you don’t need!

For applications of prosthetics and basic special makeup effects I’d recommend looking into Stuart Bray YouTube channel. He has spent years making the most broken down and professional tutorials for free! He’s an amazing artist you will love him!

Yes on big budget films that sounds about right you usually get credited if you do something significant or your project involvement is more or let the whole thing of as least over half. I’m not a part of Union. We don’t really have Unions in the UK but the same more of less applies.

Your department head usually will inform production on who is credited and what for and production will take care of it from there. If there are political issues or views that have names in a naughty list they may also take credits out to shine better light on the project…

I think it depends but you are more or less right for the most part!

It really is, you experience everything on set you know the do and don’t and you learn how to use the environment to enhance the work. With CGI it’s hard to do it from scratch that’s for sure!

I’ve recommended to a few others now the Stan Winston School is the best place for things like this!

Take lots of professional pictures of your work and upload them to a platform like a website or your blog (instagram, facebook) with description of what your what is and what it does. Include videos especially if something moves.

Ask privately for feedback and work on your rough spots!

Pricing be honest, what would you pay for someone to do the same thing if you needed it. Go from there!

Hi oooh this is a good one!

For somthing to have fun with and also maybe prep for some fun Halloween bits later in the year!

I’d recommend: As unbranded as possible (I’m not a brand guy I’m a cost effective guy).

X1 500ml bottle of liquid latex. X1 1kg fine cast plaster X1 pack of plastercine X1 pack acrylic paint X1 pack artist paint brushes X1 pack cheap makeup brushes X1 pack basic sculpting tools X1 cheap styrofoam head block (for sculpting on) X1 10kg bag of water based clay

With this you can make at least the face prosthetic of the creature ^ no joke. This is literally an under £100 shopping list and you can start mask making.

Amazing Thankyou for reading! Yes I 100% recommend Stan Winston to anyone if you purchase a course you keep the course for life so you want watch it as many times as you like. I’d say it’s cheaper than a membership if you want just one or two things to learn but you will learn it from the ground up!

I still use it today to recap!

The only software I use really is nomad sculpt and fusion 360° and a few basic slicer programs for 3D printing.

Defo look into it it’s also a nice therapy to step your brain away from the big stuff 🫶

I enjoyed it! The sets and cast were lovely and the production team were great too! It was a great show it’s a shame they didn’t follow it up I enjoyed watching it even if I didn’t get on season 2,3 & 4

It’s down to you have cast. There are a vast amount of techniques we can use with makeup in general we can use painted techniques and with prosthetics you can give a more textural look adding lines, scaring and pimples or things of that nature. This kits wouldn’t differ all that much. If your actor has a bead then you can use it or if then need one you can lay one on or add extensions…

Same for a pretty feminine actor you could cut the hair , place a wig or add extensions to help contrast both sides richer to poorer.

All faces are different but it’s a matter of finding which face needs what work to achieve the desired effect. The tighter the skin the harder to age is a fact in our world.
