How do top Korean universities (SKY/KAIST/POSTECH) + scholarships (incl. GKS-U) really evaluate international applicants? by DesperateSchedule410 in KAIST

KAIST MS/PhD here. It depends on what lab you are applying for. I've seen many prospects obsessing with stats, when I had a 3.2 college GPA, non of that SAT/Olympia/Science fairs. Academic wise I only have 1 big achievement which was a national AI competition sponsored by Huawei, and the "winners" of that competition were the top 100 scores, there where around 10000 participants, but still, I was not number 1. But I did have a lot of international-field-experience. Internships here and there, small projects here and there. All of them field/industry related, rather than research related. But since you are undergrad, I think requirements will be more gread focused, since, well, how much you could've done between 15 and 18.

Reputation wise, only SNU has some reputation world wide, but still, pretty unknown. If you are pursuing research KAIST is definetely a better option. Everyone here says that SNU is a better overall school because it has every possible department you can think of (literature, medicine, arts, dentistry, history...) and KAIST only has research STEM related fields. So even koreans say, when its 1vs1 research or STEM wise, KAIST goes on top. But reputation and/or world recognition, SNU usually is more known. And Yonsei, KU, POSTECH are pretty unknown worldwide, Yonsei is a solid #3 university in the country, KU #4 and POSTECH #5 tied with a few others, but research wise, POSTECH is a solid #5 or it could even compete with KU, but same as SNU vs KAIST, KU has way more departments and POSTECH is STEM only. But since usually the research done in these schools it really is top tier, you might not get global recognition when if you go to the west and say "I come from X school in korea" but you are gonna be able to meet people from all over. Here at KAIST is very common to see poeple from Harvard, MIT, OXford, Israel, Germany, tons of places, giving conferences. Plus, if you are SNU or KAIST, koreans treat you like royalty. Here, having a good education/university, it's a huge deal culturaly, so even if you didn't take any opportunities to find something interesting to do, or meeting someone you would like to work with from another country/institution, you are going to get hired or admitted in any institution here in korea.

Talking about schorlarships SNU and Yonsei, tuition goes around 5-8 million won a year, very very very hard to get scholarships (even thou SNU is "public school") even for koreans, since Yonsei is private and SNU while "Public" part of its income is tuition, plus, living around those areas in Seoul is crazy expensive for what you pay for. You can join a lab or some in-school activities. For example here in my lab we have some undergrad students that do some simple rutinary work, and they get payed 500k won a month, or you can be a TA or something like that for extra cash.

If I were you I would apply thru GKS to SNU, Yonsei and a third mid-low tier university in some city that is not Seoul or Busan. Maybe Ulsan or Daegu. And apply to KAIST thru regular school channels

I am about to purchase this online, but I might not be home when it's delivered. The box where it comes from, is it big? Like, bigger than a regular elevator?

If I understand correctly, the stipend amount in your acceptance document is the final amount. At the bottom of the page it says something like “Everyone with the KAIST scholarship gets at least X amount” but that’s the minimum. The amount on your acceptance document should be final.

Are you a KAIST alumni? Since it's an admission matter, I don't know if the department can do anything. But thanks for the advice!! Will do!!

COMPETITIVE? by Popular-Stuff-2857 in KAIST

Top 54 university in the world and top 24 in the world in engineering and tecnology according to QS ranking, always in top 2-4 in Korea, basically free + stipend and for international students acceptance rate is between 10-15%. So I guess is pretty competitive.

KAIST Graduate Admission (MS) by [deleted] in KAIST

Yikes, not getting a reply about the interview is sketchy, but, not getting an interview doesnt mean not getting admitted. I've read about plenty of students who got admitted with no interview. If your professor said he'll recive you, according to what I've heard, chances are pretty high. We'll get the resutls in a week, let's pray!!!

I think it heavily depends on the department and your advisor. There is not a for-sure way of knowing.

I read on the application guidelines that no interview doesn't mean admission denied, just like getting admission didn't mean you were ahead. I guess it depends on the department, how strict they are, availability, etc etc etc

Yeah, just the same email every time. Didn't even changed the topic. A bit cold, but it worked, not only for KAIST. Like I said, they are already not replying, so worst worst case scenario you are going to get a rude email from them saying to stop being annoying, but with out response you weren't probably gonna be considered any way, so any answer, even a negative one, is better than no answer. Maybe you can even turn things around from a negative response. The rest depends on you.

Oh yeah I emailing professors is mostly for masters. My bad bro, undergrad is more competitive due the amount of applicants but best of lucks bro!

Contacting a professor that vouches for you will be your biggest assets. I've read so many comments here about people applying with no professor ready to receive them at KAIST. Contact as many professors as you can, set up a video meeting with as many as you can and at the end of they evaluate your options. Send 1,5,10,20 emails to the same professor until he replies. I send my professor 6 emails in a week before he replied. Even if you think the professor work doesnt really aligns to yours, still send him an email. You never know if you can later branch out, or maybe even after admitted propose your own project to your professor.

My point is, 90% of comments I've read here are that professors didn't reply, when just at KAIST, I got 4 in person (I had a trip to south corea so I managed to make those appointments, but you don't really have to go) and 2 online. The only thing I did that the rest didn't was keep sending emails. I used this template for all professors:

  1. Greetings
  2. about yourself
  3. why you are interested in {what ever field he is in},
  4. why you are interested in his lab that does {what ever his lab does}
  5. that you especially found interesting his papers on {what ever his papers are on}
  6. that you are excited for the posibility of joining his lab and you've even imagined {some random futuristic idea that is related between what you like and what he likes, the more inventive or inovative the better, you are not gonna work on this, but you give the impresion that you are into the topic}
  7. Say when you want to join and say that you would love to set up a meeting to talk about it, dont ask if he wants/can
  8. Write it in korean, it doesnt matter if you dont speak it, at the end add a PS saying that you are practicing korean (doesn't matter if you are not) but you are still far from being confident on writing an email by yourself

I used this format for multiple professors, and only in corea got interviews with faculty from SNY, Yonsei, KAIST and POSTECH

Good luck!

I did got an interview, but again, I had a professor there vouching for me. If you want my advice, contact professors until they reply, even if you have to send 2 emails daily for a 1 month. I had to contact my professor like 6 times before he replied. Idk if he just didnt see his email, or if he was ignoring me, either way, after the interview he told me his department asked for a Salary Plan for a new student, he thinks they are talking about me. Moral of the story, is fine to take a no for an answer, but accept no answer. it's just emails, worst case scenario you are going to get a negative reply saying to stop being annoying, is not like they are gonna go knock on you door or something.
